Pinstripe Alley Top 100 Yankees: #9 Bill DickeyArguably the most underrated Yankee ever, Bill Dickey was the backbone of one of the most successful eras in franchise history.
As a long-time Yankees MLB Coach, he would decide, who would become a Yankees Catcher. His work with future Yankee Catchers Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, Johnny Blanchard, Jake Gibbs, and Truman Munson gave the team, a great line of Catchers.

A man who didn’t have the greatest natural gifts but simply learned how to best use what he had… I never saw him pitch, but my dad who was a big time Yankee fan spoke highly about his pitching. He said, he just seemed to pitch well enough to win. If the Yankees scored 6 runs, he might give up 4. If the Yankees only scored 2, he would hold the opponent to 1.

Pitching to the scoreboard is a lost art. Heck, pitching past the seventh inning is a lost art.

You used to hear "pitching to the scoreboard" when David Wells was with the Yankees. I really thought it meant that Boomer wasn't going to kill himself with walks, he made hitters earn their way on base.

Throwing strikes and challenging hitters with a big lead, economy of pitches and no free passes. Pitching to contact…

The perception that Jack Morris pitched to the scoreboard may be the reason he's in the HOF. A lot of wins but relatively high ERA and WHIP.

Veteran Yankees starter Eddie Lopat worked with Whitey Ford in 1953-1954, by using his 8mm camera, to teach Ford how to improve his pitching style that would make him a Hall of Fame Pitcher. Whitey would missed the 1951-1952 seasons to the Army. Which probably cost him a shot to win 300 games. Sadly, Yankees GM George Weiss had a club policy no more than 1-20 game winner on the club per season. During the 1949-1953 Yankees World Championship run, veteran starter Vic Raschi was the highest paid Yankee Pitcher at $40,000.

Am I the only one that thinks Jeter above DiMaggio is a pretty big screw up? Jeter is my favorite player. But over JoeD? I can't see that at all.
