agree w many of the faves listed here. as a kid, mantle was my hero. i used to try to swing and run like him when i played as a kid.
as much as i liked mo & jeter, the guy in your pic was probably my core four fave. the other guy "under the radar" was bernie. should been called the core five.

Yep, Joe D. and Gehrig would be on my top 3 favorite list too. Always loved Ruth, even more so when I heard that he always made time to talk to kids and sign autographs for them. My Dad met Lou Gehrig on a class trip. He couldn't believe how wide Gehrig's shoulders were. But what he remembers most was what a great guy Gehrig was and how nice he was to my Dad and his classmates.

Seems most players years ago appreciated fans more. Certainly not all, I know a few guys who said Whitey Ford was not particularly nice.

Imagine that you spotted Mantle and you had your ten or twelve year old son with you and decided to ask for an autograph and were summarily dismissed with a few curt curse words. The way the press was and the non-existent social media swept it all under the rug. I was gonna bring this up earlier but was a bit reluctant to tarnish the image many have of him, but without going into detail...a friend of mine who idolized Mick had exactly the experience you described when he had the opportunity to meet and introduce his son to him. The way I see it, truth is truth. I loved watching Johnny Carson as a kid, but damn! They say he was a mean SOB in person. We have to choose whether to let that tarnish the image or to enjoy the talents presented for what it is, and separate the two. I met Bill Bergey the old Philadelphia Eagles linebacker in odd circumstances. Sold him an out of state fishing license when he was obviously drunk and bragging about how they’d been fishing without one for a week or so and figured he’d better get one. He wasn’t really nasty or anything, but rather entitled…

Caution...not for those easily offended.

Mantle is said to love to joke around and I can imagine hime wanting to shock a strait-laced member of the front office…

Don't want to offend anyone including our new women posters:
