Sorry if this has been done, but who are your favorite Yankees spanning your fandom? Let's say top-5.
I became a Yankee fan during the 1984 season. Mattingly and Winfield duking it out for the batting title. I was 7 and I can remember checking the box scores every day in the newspaper. Donnie Baseball was my guy.
5. Paul O'Neill 4. Bernie Williams 3. Mariano Rivera 2. Derek Jeter 1. Don Mattingly

Those of us who have been kicking around for a lot of decades have a much bigger field to choose from. My fandom goes back to 1957, and I have a really hard time narrowing it down to five. One and two never change and never will, but for the moment I would say --
5. Aaron Judge 4. Mariano Rivera 3. Derek Jeter 2. Whitey Ford 1. Mickey Mantle
But of course if you ask me tomorrow I might replace Judge with Mattingly or try to sneak Munson in there and what do I do about Yogi Berra and Roger Maris and Bernie Williams and Paul O'Neill and Ron Guidry and Bobby Murcer and so on? Impossible question, but I look forward to some of the responses, which obviously will vary greatly by age.

I've been a Yankees fan since the Bronx Zoo days of the late 70's so it's hard to pick out just 5 Yankees as my favorites. My top three are easy"
1. Mattingly 2. Jeter 3. Nettles After that I'm like Pipps, where I could choose 2 more Yanks from a list of many. Just thinking about right now, I'll go with
4. Bernie 5. Judge
It's tough to leave out greats, like Munson, Gator, Randolph, Chambliss, Winfield, O'Neill, Posada, Pettitte, Mo, Cone, Mussina, CC and so on.

3. Kei Igawa
2. Carl Pavano
1. Tony Womack

Mantle Mantle Mantle Mantle Mantle All others are #1a… In case there was any doubt. It’s kind of sad when you get older and you find out he was kind of an a-hole. But without #7 and the insignia on that hat (Stan Williams was wearing it the first time I liked it) I might have grown up an Orioles fan, or maybe a Phillies fan. I think if I went back to about age 6 or 8 if someone told me Mantle could fly or walk in water I would have believed. At least he wasn’t an a-hole to (most) team mates. That was the only world he really lived in. When you realize he was a shy kid you also realize the changes he had to live through because of his fame. That wasn’t easy. I was a shy kid too, and I could barely take the attention I got because I worked in the local Western Auto…

He seemed polite in the interviews I've seen, but that was long after his playing days were over.

He seemed polite in the interviews I've seen, but that was long after his playing days were over. The alcohol turned him into a guy that was nasty with children and adult fans on many occasions. From all accounts he wasn’t much of a husband, with heavy philandering ways, and in cases like that I assume he wasn’t a great dad. Quite an irresponsible life. Interviews are different. You get all cleaned up and want to make an impression. Imagine that you spotted Mantle and you had your ten or twelve year old son with you and decided to ask for an autograph and were summarily dismissed with a few curt curse words. The way the press was and the non-existent social media swept it all under the rug. There was definitely an ugly side, but we’ve all met an alcoholic or two before…

The way the press was and the non-existent social media swept it all under the rug. I was gonna bring this up earlier but was a bit reluctant to tarnish the image many have of him, but without going into detail...a friend of mine who idolized Mick had exactly the experience you described when he had the opportunity to meet and introduce his son to him.
