I found an actual photo of the letter on Reddit. If Kaybli dares to post it for me, all can see. I’m going with the story that this was written as a joke. Mantle is said to love to joke around and I can imagine hime wanting to shock a strait-laced member of the front office… I'll post it with a warning that's its vulgar. Don't want to offend anyone including our new women posters:
I thought everyone had seen this already? Well done, Mister Billah…

Well done, Mister Billah… I'm 99.9 percent sure that Mick was goofing on them. Very much his style. Yes. Never grew up until reality hit him between the eyes az he neared death… immature senses of humor and propriety. A career in the sheltered environment of professional sports can do that to you. Out drinking and carousing. Some think the story of him out “beaver shooting” on hotel roofs is cute. If it were stated as “Mantle was a peeping Tom” it might be viewed as perversion, right?…

I’m very much of the Victorian mind regarding consenting adults: “Just don’t startle the horses.”

I separated Mantle the player from Mantle the man many years ago… Talent is talent. Morality is morality. We’re all human and subject to temptation…

We’re all human and subject to temptation… I had a hard time with DiMaggio after reading Richard Ben Cramer's book on him. There's plenty of other stories out there about what a "prickly" person the Clipper was. But, same as you, I've learned to separate the man from the athlete.

They wrecked the numbers that used to be so precious to me. I usually can separate actors from their lives as well. Who cares? If they entertain, they entertain…

here's a sorta funny joe d story ... joe d was my dad's guy. he had a baseball with joe d's signature. so one day as a 9-11 yr old, guess i found it and decided to sign it. who knows why you do such things when you're a kid. certainly had no concept of it's value. when my dad saw it, he laughed it off and something to the effect, i have this baseball signed by joe d and this other famous guy. didn't get mad at all. he was the best ... i could still have it in a box or crate somewhere and bet w/o my signature, it would be worth a pretty penny . Great story Bumper. Joe D. was my Dad's favorite too. Joe used to have relatives that lived in the town that I reside in. One Sunday morning I stopped in the local grocery store to grab some doughnuts. I turned to walk down one of the aisles and who is coming the other way, Joe D. He's dressed in a nice pair of blue slacks and a red sweater. He's holding the hand of his grandson as they walk toward me. I am wearing a Yankee ball cap. For a brief second we make eye contact and then he quickly looks away. I can tell he is fearful I will bother him so I just walk by without saying anything. When I make my way to checkou, he is in front of me checking out. After he pays and leaves the store I ask the lady who is checking me out if she knew who that was? She said, yep that was Joe Dimaggio, he often stops here after church with his grandson. I never saw him again, think I did the right thing by not bothering him and hope he apreciated it.

Very thoughtful of you, 1955nyfan. I think JoeD appreciated it. At least you can always say you saw the great Yankee Clipper in person and have a story to tell.
