I think the kid has shown some ability and could become a very good MLB SS. Whether you are of the opinion or not that he is a GG SS, his defense is very good. He has some speed and has put up better power numbers than I had anticipated. I also understand that not everyone is on board with him. I understand the concern and I agree he needs to be a more selective hitter, raise his average and OBP and cut down his stikeouts.
What does he have to do in 2024 to take the next step and erase some of the concerns? If he were to raise his average to .250, make more contact and walk a little more would that be enough?

I know lots of folks who followed Volpe as an amateur here in NJ and they say he was much more of a gap hitter as a kid. I think the Yankees want the power numbers and that fits their model. If so, that is what he is going to do. For me, I'd love to see him get on base more often and use his speed. I think the revised rules could be very kind to basrunners.

If they try to make him go the power route that may not end well . I wish they wouldnt be so obsessed with power

I grew concerned as the season wore on and it became apparent that Volpe was hunting homers. I’d like to see him take pitches and be more of a gap to gap hitter. It looked like he was too susceptible to the low and away slider, almost to the point that we used to see Gary Sanchez victimized by it.
If he can lay off that pitch I see no reason he can’t hit at least .240. If he does his OBP should track upward into the low .300 range. If he takes more pitches he could even get that up to .320 or so.
The numbers support his gold glove from last season, though I’m still not sold that’s going to be a SS within a couple of seasons.
He was such an impactful base runner/ stealer last season in the first month our so, but as the season wore on he got caught stealing more and seemed reluctant to run as well.
He appears to have been a good well overmatched in his rookie season, yet still but up a season that hinted that there’s more inside, especially right after the famed chicken parm dinner, when he made some adjustments. They didn’t last long as the pitchers apparently responded in kind and shut him down again.
So now we have 2024. The next move is he’s. He’s still an knfany in baseball terms. We can expect anything between massive improvement and regression…

Volpe's one the most important new projects for the Yankees new hitting coaches. More contact, more line drives are needed and Volpe is a strong kid, so the HR's will still come with consistent contact.

Volpe's hit for power his entire pro career. He's not hit for average above A ball. Did Yanks change his hitting approach after he was signed?

I think that would be enough, because that would improve his OBP, which will allow his to steal more bases and perhaps become a leadoff hitter someday.

I hate Cashman's love affair with homerun hitters. A shortstop with a good glove, who can get on base and hit the occasional HR would be gold.

I never noticed that, I thought it might be because he was getting older. Did he ever officially retire? If he's interested, I would like for the Yankees someday to hire him as one of their big league coaches.

I always viewed Gardner as a hardworking player that always gave 100% and a natural leader.
As for Volpe, MLB is a game of adjustments, some player make them, some don't. That's why in my opinion there are so many all or nothing hitters in MLB. I don't know him, but Volpe looks like a player that's willing to make adjustments to improve his game.
