dbacks have been an offensive juggernaut so far this w an OPS of .954. hopefully gil can slow them down. have always liked his stuff. if can command it, we have a winner. True, but it came against the Rockies, who must have the worst rotation in MLB, even when not in Coors. One fantasy expert said about their rotation: "I can't think of a rotation where there was not one starter worth drafting at any point in a draft. Until now." Yikes! But who wants to pitch for them in that environment? <said the man that lives yet another 1/2 Mile higher than the Mile High City>…

Yep. If you had said the Yanks would open the season on the road against Houston and Arizona and come out even 4-3, I would have taken that anytime. Me too. Was hoping they'd go 5-5 in their tough first 10 games. Now it's time to get greedy, 8-2 or 7-3 will work.

With the cold wet weather in the East, it's been a blessing for the Yankees to open in dry weather on the road while the Mets shiver and lose in this dismal atmosphere. Not a fan of indoor baseball, but grateful for it tonight. Unseasonably cloudy, drizzly, chilly (60) Enjoy!!! You get to see our dynamic duo.... Lets hope Cabrera continues to rack it.

Ryne Nelson starts for the D'backs. A well-regarded prospect before last season, Baseball America had him as their #98 prospect in their Top 100 before the 2022 season, and Fangraphs had him as their #103 prospect with a grade of 50 before last year. He struggled to get swings and misses and was very hittable last year in the D'backs rotation: 27 starts, 144 IP, 159 hits, 87 runs, 85 earned, 24 HR, 46 BB and just 96 K. More or less an average hard hit rate, but a very high barrel rate over 11% (MLB average is close to 8%). Supposedly, he showed improved life on his FB and better overall stuff in spring training, and the D'backs hope he can hold down the #5 slot until Rodriguez gets back from the IL and Montgomery is stretched out.
He's never faced the Yankees, but three of the Yankees faced him in 2022-3 in the NL:
Soto is 3 for 11 against him with a triple, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K and 1 SB (Surprised he has two K's against Soto) Grisham is 2 for 8 with a double, 2 RBI and 3 K Berti is 1-3 with a K.
========================
Luis Gil has been a talented prospect in the Yankees system for 4-5 years now, ever since they got him from the Twins in a trade for OF Jake Cave. Never in any top 100 list, but he was the #10 prospect in their system at Fangraphs in 2020 (grade 45), #13 prospect in 2021 (grade 45), #12 prospect in 2022 (grade 45), #18 prospect in 2023 grade 40. Same scouting report each time, great FB, excellent slider, some sort of change, no command, destined to be a middle reliever or a closer because of that command and lack of a 3rd good pitch
He pitched in the rotation for them in 2021 with some success, far fewer innings in 2022 with no success, then was injured almost all of last year. Fastball grade 70, slider grade 55, change 30, command 35 were his last scouting grades at Fangraphs. Making just his 8th major league start tonight. He's never faced the D'backs, and only Gurriel has faced him, 0-1 with a K and a BB

Game underway, 1-2 on Torres. Nelson averaged 94 on the FB last year, throwing 98 tonight. Chases a slider above the zone for the K. 1 down.

3-0 on Soto. I'm playing catchup here because I was watching the Iowa vs. LSU Woman's NCAA Tournament Game, then the end of the Rangers game.

3-0 on Soto. I'm playing catchup here because I was watching the Iowa vs. LSU Woman's NCAA Tournament Game, then the end of the Rangers game. Caitlin Clark was going off!

FB inside near the top on 3-1 is ball 4. Soto (surprisingly) walks. Let's see if Judge can deal with Nelson's FB FB down and in the zone at 96, Judge rifles up the middle for a hard single. Soto to 2nd with 1 out.

Rizzo flies out and Soto goes to third. Here's Stanton. He shouldn't be batting 5th.

Nelson also throws a slider about 25% of the time, a change 13% of the time and a curve about once an inning.
1-1 on Rizzo. FN outside corner fouled off, 1-2. Fouls off a FB away. Takes a 97 FB outside Spoils a change 6-8 inches outside. FB down the middle, just gets under it, the fly to deep center is caught by Carroll, Soto tags and goes to 3rd, Judge holds 1st. 2 down
