Another solid inning for Gil. The guy belongs. We've seen many almost starters over the years that just never took the next step toward a rotation mainstay - Ivan Nova, David Phelps, Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Adam Warren, Deivi Garca - but this guy - if he stays healthy - can become a number 2 in this rotation.

Soto gets pretty decent jumps for a liability in the outfield. Remember, some fans were wanting him to DH? He's not Mookie Betts out there, but he's no Jake Bauers either. There was an article this morning in the Athletic about Soto and his defense. He trained this off season with Jackie Bradley Jr. and that's helped him with his OF defense. |

Stanton fouls off a slider down and in.
FB misses up and in, 1-2.
Takes a slider well low near the corner outside, 2-2
Slider several inches low, Stanton starts but checks in time, 3-2
Stanton guesses slider by location and count, but the D'backs pitch him backward and he takes a FB above the knees by several inches for the ꓘ.
That's the price he pays for getting old in a hurry, he has to guess now to get his bat going in time to catch up to heat
Quickly 0-2 on Verdugo.

I get the feeling Stanton guesses alot. Yeah, he has to, otherwise he has no chance to catch up to FB above 95. Especially from righties. Change low, 2-2 Slider in the middle at the very bottom, and Verdugo jumps all over it, but pulls it foul down the line in right. Throw over. Spoils a change low. Nelson over 70 pitches already with one out in the 3rd. Fb high 3-2. D'backs better get someone up, even if Nelson gets out of this. Slow curve dropping to knees, but Verdugo spoils. |
