hmm that's interesting. guess w the doubleheader, despite leading the team in HRs and having good splits (only 4 AB but a HR) against carrasco, stanton's sitting in game one. boone probably just wants to get grisham some ABs and doesn't want judge playing the field in both games. good to see ocab back in there. hasn't played since sunday. so hopefully the layoff didn't cool him off.
like the yankees, the guardians are one of the surprises of this early season. hopefully schmidt can give us some length as DHs are tough on pens and we're now playing 6 games in 5 days.

Veteran Carlos Carrasco has returned to Cleveland after three years with the Mets. They were still the Indians when he left; they're the Guardians now. Carrasco has made two starts so far this season, both no-decisions. In 8 innings he has allowed 7 hits and 4 BB, but has not allowed a HR. He's struck out 9, his ERA is 4.50 and his BB is 1.375. He threw just under 80 pitches in both starts, making it through 5 innings in the first one in Oakland, but just 3 innings in the second one in Minnesota.
His record vs. the Yankees is so-so. In 13 games (10 starts), he's 5-5 with an ERA of 4.01. In 60 2/3 innings, he's allowed 55 hits, 8 HR, 31 runs, 27 earned, walked 19 and struck out 55, and his WHIP is a solid 1.22. The quadruple slash line of Yankees batters against him in his career is .237/.297/.410/.706. Of course, some of those numbers go back to 2010, and the Yanks have changed the core of their team at least 3 times since then, so how relevant those 14-year-old numbers are is pretty much none. He hasn't pitched against the Yanks since 2021.
Repertoire: Carrasco's FB used to average 95 and he used to throw it almost 60% of the time. So far this year, his average FB is down to 90, and he's throwing it just under 40% of the time. His 2nd pitch is aa 85-6 change thrown just over 30% of the time. His slider at 81 and his curve at 79 about both thrown about 15% of the time.
==========
Clarke Schmidt pitches tonight for the Yanks. In two starts this year, he remains the same inconsitent starter he was all of last year. The stuff is still plus on several of his pitches and the command is still minus on all of his pitches. As I must say once or twice every game, hitters have trouble with him in the early innings because he throws at least 7 different pitches and variations of pitches, and he doesn't know where any pitch is going, so it take them 3-4-5 innings to figure out where they're going. If you watch him carefully, you'll notice that to almost every batter, Schmidt leaves at least 1-2 waist-high, down the middle, or both.
In 2 starts this season, he has 2 no-decisions. He's thrown 9 2/3 innings, allowed 13 hits, 5 runs (all earned) 1 HR, and 3 BB, while striking out 9. His ERA is 4.66 (last year it was 4.64) and his WHIP is 1.655 (last year it was a poor 1.354). He threw 75 pitches in 5 1/3 innings in a decent start in Houston, and just 4 1/3 innings in a poor start against the Jays at the Stadium.
Against the Indians/Guardians, he's been in 3 games, two of them he started, and the third one he finished. Typically, the two starts were both no-decisions. He's pitched a total of 10 1/3 innings against Cleveland, 8 1/2 in the starts, 2 in the relief appearance. He's allowed 16 hits, 8 runs, 5 earned, 1 HR, 5 BB and struck out 11. His ERA is 4.35 and his WHIP is just over 2.00. Very typical Schmidt for Clarke.
The Guardians' team quadruple slash line vs. Schmdt is .340/.404/.447/.851
Repertoire: His five-pitch repertoire is more or less the same from last season. Usage of the FB, cutter and change are up 2-5% from last year; usage of the slider is down 4% and the curve is down 8%, but all that doesn't suggest a change of pitch mix; it might be just matchups and random choices in the first two starts.
Assortment so far: FB 95 and cutter 92, but about 31% of the time; slider 85-6 about 24%, curve at 93 about 11%, and change at 90 about 3%

That's 11-23 with 2 doubles, 2 K and 2 BB for the five guys in the lineup who've faced Schmidt before. and 5-21 with a HR, 7 K and 5 BB for the Yanks who've faced Carrasco
Game underway.
Volpe gets under an 0-1 slider on the inside corner, flies to Kwan in left, 1 down.

Soto gets a FB down the middle on 0-1, foul tips it. Swings over a 1=2 change down and in for a K, 2 down.

Schmidt needs to pick it up or he risks being the odd man out when Cole returns.
