Gleyber makes the throw! Gleyber makes the throw! Gleyber makes the throw! Feel the same way; the only good news there was that the grounder was right to him, and he had time to fully set and throw.

He had time to practice feed Volpe at second to turn a fictional double play. My brother played softball on a team that used to practice double plays during the game by going to second then to first when no one was on base. It was hilarious.

Yanks win despite leaving 9 on base and going 2-11 with RISP. And making a terrible throwing error by Torres giving up the only runs the Guardians got. And despite a typical Schmidt meltdown in the 6th after 5 solid innings.
===========================
Yanks win 3-2, back on the winning track after losing the 3rd game to the Marlins. They're 11-3 on the season now, and for the moment, are 2 1/2 up on the O's, 3 up on the Rays, 4 up on the Red Sox, and 5 up on the Jays.
===========================
3rd star of the game: Schmidt for five good innings, anyway. 2nd star of the game: Hamilton, for getting through 2 solid innings with a 1 run lead despite not having his best location. 1st star of the game: Cabrera for the decisive 2 run HR, pretty much the only clutch hit the Yanks got all day.

The pitchers stole one for the Yankees today. The offense wasted all kinds of scoring chances, the base running was bad and the defense sloppy. Still they won and we know the Yanks are better than this. On to game 2.

We are tough on Schmidt, but he did only give up one hit in the first five innings of play. Walks drove up his pitch count and created drama. If Gleyber makes the double play throw in the sixth, it's a shutout 3-0.

Game two is 6:10 tonight on YES Yanks calling up marginal major leaguer Cody Poteet to start game 2. He has a career record of 2-4 with an ERA of 4.45 in 19 games and 9 starts in 2021 and 2022. Walks too many guys and has given up too many HR (11 in 58 2/3 innings) in his brief career. This season at Scranton, he had made 2 starts, thrown 8 1/3 innings, gave up 3 hits, 2 of them solo HRs, walked 3 and K'd 12.
Triston McKenzie will pitch for the Guardians. He's 1-1 with an ERA of 4.00 in his two starts this year; 9 innings, 7 innings, 5 runs, 4 earned, 1 HR, 6 BB and 4 K. He allowed 4 of those BB in 5 2/3 shutout innings in his last start vs. the White Sox.
===========================
OK, that'll be it for me for about 2 1/2 hours. Gonna relax for a while, make myself an early dinner about 2 hours from now, and then rejoin you all for game 2.
See ya later, gang!

His command is so poor, even he's never sure where any pitch is going to wind up, and it makes him so inconsistent. He can look good for multiple innings or even games at a time, then lose it so fast you can't understand it. As i say every so often, he's in a race against time to gain sufficient command to become a reliable mid-rotation starter before he blows out his shoulder or his elbow.

Sorry I fell asleep and missed the end of the game. Nice outcome, but not the best Yankee effort.

Oh man !!! Berti to IL and they bring up Kevin Smith instead of Durbin ?!?!?! WTF??? Neither Smith nor Dubin is on the 40-man roster, so that doesn't explain it. Someone will have to leave, possibly Jorbit Vivas to the 60-day IL with his orbital fracture. My guess is that the team considers this temporary and with both players out of options, they don't mind exposing Smith to waivers to send him back down, but would mind Durbin getting snatched from them that way. Maciejwski DFAed to make room for the return of Marinaccio from AAA. He was pitching well in 3 games, 5 innings, 1 hits, 0 runs, 4 K and most importantly, just 1 BB.

Don't know if lauren or anyone else is going to start a separate game thread for the 2nd game, but I'll leave this here for now, and if there is a second thread started, I'll re-post it there...
==========
Triston McKenzie pitches the 2nd game for the Guardians. A highly regarded pitching prospect, he was top 100 on the lists at Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus AND MLB pipeline before the 2017-8-9 and 2021 seasons. His career has been derailed by injuries multiple times, but he did break through with a very good 2022 season, going 11-11 in 30 starts with a 2.96 ERA and a WHIP under 1.00.
For his career, in 5 seasons and 66 starts, he's 19-25 with a career ERA of 3.75. In 369 2/3 innings, he's alllowed just 262 hits, but also 54 HR and 130 BB, while striking out 3.88. his career WHIP is an excellent 1.06 because of that very low hit rate.
This year so far, he's 1-1 in 2 starts with an ERA of 4.00. In 9 innings, he's alllowed 7 hits, 5 runs (4 earned) 1 HR and 6 BB while striking out just 4. In his career, he's made 2 starts vs. the Yanks, winning one and getting a no-decision in the other. In 11 innings against them, he's allowed 5 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 2 HR, 5 BB, and struck out 12. The Yankee team quadruple slash line vs. McKenzie is .132/.250/.290/.540 .
McKenzie started his career as a 4-pitch righty, but junked his change after his 2nd season, and have gone with the FB, slider and curve since then. This year so far, his repertoire is 91 FB about 55% of the time, 85 slider about 25% of the time, and 78 curve about 20% of the time. So his offspeed is the curve, which is roughly 13 mph slower than his FB.
==============
Cody Poteet (the only player in MLB history with that last name, by the way) did not pitch in the majors last year. He pitched briefly for the Marlins in 2021 and 2022. 19 games, 9 of them starts, 58 2/3 innings, 48 hits, 29 runs, all of them earned, 11 HR, 27 BB and 53 K's. He has thrown 2 games at AAA Scranton this year for the Yanks, both no-decisions. 8 1/3 innings just 3 hits, but 2 were solo HR. They account for both of his runs allowed. He's allowed 2 BB and struck out 12. His career major league ERA is 4.45, and his career WHIP is 1.278. The 2nd game start will be the first time he's ever faced the Indians/Guardians.
I don't know what his pitching assortment is, but when last in the majors, he was a 4 pitch righty who relied heavily on his changeup. His repertoire in 2021-22: 94 FB about 44% of the time, 87 change 27% of the time, 86 slider 20% of the time, and curve 79 about 9%. In his 2022 season, he mostly junked the curve, threw far fewer FB and raised the use of his change from 18% to 38% of the time. He did most of his work as a reliever in 2022 (after all 7 games in 2021 were starts), so perhaps the Marlins told him to junk his 4th pitch, the curve, and rely more heavily on his change. Back in the rotation this year in Scranton and now with the Yanks. He might want to use that 4th pitch more often.
