Re-posting from previous game thread:
Triston McKenzie pitches the 2nd game for the Guardians. A highly regarded pitching prospect, he was top 100 on the lists at Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus AND MLB pipeline before the 2017-8-9 and 2021 seasons. His career has been derailed by injuries multiple times, but he did break through with a very good 2022 season, going 11-11 in 30 starts with a 2.96 ERA and a WHIP under 1.00.
For his career, in 5 seasons and 66 starts, he's 19-25 with a career ERA of 3.75. In 369 2/3 innings, he's alllowed just 262 hits, but also 54 HR and 130 BB, while striking out 3.88. his career WHIP is an excellent 1.06 because of that very low hit rate.
This year so far, he's 1-1 in 2 starts with an ERA of 4.00. In 9 innings, he's alllowed 7 hits, 5 runs (4 earned) 1 HR and 6 BB while striking out just 4. In his career, he's made 2 starts vs. the Yanks, winning one and getting a no-decision in the other. In 11 innings against them, he's allowed 5 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 2 HR, 5 BB, and struck out 12. The Yankee team quadruple slash line vs. McKenzie is .132/.250/.290/.540 .
McKenzie started his career as a 4-pitch righty, but junked his change after his 2nd season, and have gone with the FB, slider and curve since then. This year so far, his repertoire is 91 FB about 55% of the time, 85 slider about 25% of the time, and 78 curve about 20% of the time. So his offspeed is the curve, which is roughly 13 mph slower than his FB.
==============
Cody Poteet (the only player in MLB history with that last name, by the way) did not pitch in the majors last year. He pitched briefly for the Marlins in 2021 and 2022. 19 games, 9 of them starts, 58 2/3 innings, 48 hits, 29 runs, all of them earned, 11 HR, 27 BB and 53 K's. He has thrown 2 games at AAA Scranton this year for the Yanks, both no-decisions. 8 1/3 innings just 3 hits, but 2 were solo HR. They account for both of his runs allowed. He's allowed 2 BB and struck out 12. His career major league ERA is 4.45, and his career WHIP is 1.278. The 2nd game start will be the first time he's ever faced the Indians/Guardians.
I don't know what his pitching assortment is, but when last in the majors, he was a 4 pitch righty who relied heavily on his changeup. His repertoire in 2021-22: 94 FB about 44% of the time, 87 change 27% of the time, 86 slider 20% of the time, and curve 79 about 9%. In his 2022 season, he mostly junked the curve, threw far fewer FB and raised the use of his change from 18% to 38% of the time. He did most of his work as a reliever in 2022 (after all 7 games in 2021 were starts), so perhaps the Marlins told him to junk his 4th pitch, the curve, and rely more heavily on his change. Back in the rotation this year in Scranton and now with the Yanks. He might want to use that 4th pitch more often.

And this as well:
Yankees' lineup vs. McKenzie:
Volpe and Soto have never faced him. Judge is 0-2 with 1 K Rizzo is 0-3 with 1 K Stanton is 1-5 with 1 K and 1 BB Torres is 1-4 with 1 BB Verdugo is 2-3 Neither Cabrera nor Wells have ever faced him.
===============
Though it's not always the case when a pitcher hasn't faced a team, this time, in addition to Poteet never facing the Indians/Guardians, none of the hitters in their lineup for the 2nd game have faced Poteet.

You would think after relying on the pen for more than expected innings, is Poteet expected to go deep into the game or a truncated start depending a long guy to deliver a couple of innings. Who would that long guy be?

Yankees Place Jon Berti On 10-Day IL, Designate Josh Maciejewski By Mark Polishuk | April 13, 2024 at 2:39pm CDT MLB Rumors
In between games of New York’s double-header with the Guardians today, the Yankees announced a series of roster moves. Utilityman Jon Berti has been placed (retroactive to April 11) on the 10-day injured list due to a left groin strain, and left-hander Josh Maciejewski was also designated for assignment. Right-hander Ron Marinaccio and infielder Kevin Smith have been called up from Triple-A to take the two open roster spots, and in Smith’s case, his minors deal with the team was replaced with a new Major League contract before being selected. Left-hander Clayton Andrews was outrighted to Triple-A, while right-hander McKinley Moore was activated from the 15-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A.
Speaking with the YES Network (X link), manager Aaron Boone indicated that Berti’s injury occurred in his most recent at-bat, when Berti beat out an infield single in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s 5-2 New York loss to Miami. While the manager didn’t put a timeline on Berti’s potential return, Boone also didn’t think the issue was overly serious.
Berti was acquired as part of a three-team trade with the Marlins and Rays just prior to Opening Day, and the veteran has been splitting third base duties with Oswaldo Cabrera while DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza have been sidelined with injuries. Cabrera is off to a scorching start at the plate, but Berti has slashed only .211/.250/.211 over his first 21 plate appearances in the pinstripes. While Smith can continue acting as a veteran counterpart to Cabrera, Boone said he has “a lot” of confidence that Cabrera can keep producing with a larger share of the playing time with Berti sidelined.
Maciejewski’s contract was selected from Triple-A earlier this week, and the 28-year-old officially became a big leaguer after throwing a perfect inning in last Monday’s 7-0 win over the Marlins. With his MLB debut behind him, Maciejewski now heads to the DFA wire as part of the roster churn at the back of the Yankees’ bullpen.
There’s a chance that a team in need of multi-inning bullpen help or even swingman help could put in a claim on Maciejewski, who has a 3.52 ERA over 294 1/3 innings (starting 31 of 101 games) in his minor league career. A 10th-round pick for the Yankees in the 2018 draft, Maciejewski has had limited success at the Triple-A level, with a 4.87 ERA in 61 frames with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
In selecting Maciejewski, the Yankees designated Andrews, and the southpaw will remain in the organization after clearing DFA waivers. Andrews made his Major League debut in the form of four appearances and 3 1/3 innings with the Brewers last season, and he joined the Yankees in a minor league trade in February after posting a 2.53 ERA over 57 innings for Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate in 2023. Control problems have limited Andrews’ effectiveness throughout his six minor league seasons, but Andrews has struggled badly in a small sample size this year — the lefty has a 14.73 ERA and six walks over just 3 2/3 innings at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Gil is starting tomorrow. I thought Nestor was starting on his regular schedule? You're right, Nestor is listed as tomorrow's starter. I don't know what they're doing, unless Gill is going to come into the game in relief.

Who would that long guy be? If Poteet can get through 3-5 innings, Yanks still have Weaver, Burdi, Gonzalez, Santana and Marinaccio available, on two days' rest each, without having to use Ferguson, Hamilton or Holmes again. Assuming Gonzalez and Nardi are the "closers", that leaves Santana Weaver and Marinaccio to provide the middle 2-4 innings.
