I don't want to start the next game thread, so I'll leave this here for now...
Logan Allen of the Guardians is one of two pitchers with the same name who have pitched for Cleveland in the last several years. The bad one came over in a trade from the Padres, didn't pitch in the majors last season, and is currently pitching at AAA for the Diamondbacks. This is the other one. This one was a farily well-regarded pitching prospect in his own right: he was the #85 prospect in the Baseball America top 100 published before last season.
In 2023, this Allen made 24 starts for the Indians, and was 7-8 with a 3.81 ERA. In 125 1/3 innings, he allowed 127 hits, 48 BB and 16 HR, while striking out 119. His WHIP was a very sub-par 1.396. So far this year in three starts, he's 2-0 with a no-decision, and in 15 2/3 innings, he's allowed 17 hits, 8 runs, all earned, 2 HR and 4 BB, while striking out 13. His ERA is 4.60 and his WHIP is a mediocre 1.340. He's allowed more than a hit per inning in his career, and walks more than one every three innings, but his HR allowance rate is better than average. Today will be his first game and start vs. the Yankees.
Repertoire: So far this season, Allen hasn't made any significant changes in his repertoire. One tiny change that could just random fluctuation in assortment is that he's using his splitter a bit less often. Otherwise, he's a 4-pitch lefty: FB at 91-2 that he throws about 45% of the time, slider at 78 or so that he throws 24% of the time, splitter at 81 that he throws 17% of the time, and cutter at 86 that he throws 14% of the time.
=======================
For the Yankees, Nestor Cortes is the starter today. We know all about him. When he's going right, he attacks hitters with a FB, cutter, slider and an occasional change, and needs excellent location on all of them to make up for mediocre velocity. After a terrible season last year in which he dealt with a serious shoulder injury for two different stays on the IL, he seems to be back in form. Right now, he's 1-1 in 3 starts with a no-decision, and in 18 inning, he's allowed 15 hits, 7 earned runs, 1 HR, 4 BB and has 13 K's. He's going to have to get that K rate up to be as successful in the future as he was in 2021 and 2022. His ERA is 3.50 and his WHIP is a solid 1.164.
In his career, he's made 5 appearances against the Indians/Guardians, 2 of them starts. He's 1-1 with an ERA of 2.50 against them. In 18 innings, he's allowed 9 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 HR, 3 BB and K'd 19. His WHIP against Cleveland is a tiny 0.667. Cortes did not pitch against the Guardians last year, in 2022 he made both of his starts against them and pitched very well: 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. Against Cortes, Cleveland has a miserable quadruple slash line of .145/.185/.307/.491.
Repertoire: So far this season, his pitch mix is virtually unchanged from 2022 and 2023. He junked his curve after the 2021 season. The cutter has taken its place, and he uses it so much now that he's cut down xomewhat on the use of his change and slider as well. This season's assortment so far: FB at 91 or so half the time, cutter at 85-6 about 30% of the time, slider 77 about 15% of the time, and change 82-3 about 5% of the time.
