Fast down and in in the zone, the drop the bat zone for a lefty, and Varsho rifles it into the RF corner for a leadoff double, and Rodon is immediately in trouble again.

Cutter way inside, 2-0. Not good.
FB down and in, Springer lines it to center for a hit. Varsho waits to make sure Judge doesn't catch it, and stops at 3rd with nobody out and Guerrero and Bichette due up.

Rodon humps up to 98 (Cole plan) but Guerrero takes it high.
Hanging slider fouled off, got away with that pitch.
Slider down and in, Guerrero fouls it off his foot. Almost had him on that one.
That's 3 pitches since 0-2 now.

Humps up to 97, just misses high and Guerrero takes it, 2-2
Four pitches since 0-2.
Tries the change and it hangs outside, 3-2. FIVE pitches since 0-2 and he's out of rope now.
FB at the top at 97 clips the top of the zone for strike 3, but not called. Ball 4, and Rodon is almost buried now.
Last pitch was 20% on Gameday.

As I've previously posted, DJ may have a hard time reclaiming his job at 3B. We may see him eased in at 1B to give Rizzo some time off. Might get a few games at 1st vs. Lefties, but DJ hasn't really hit the last two years, either. May platoon a bit with Cabrera, rest Rizzo, maybe fill in for Gleyber a day or two if Gleyber keeps scuffling with the stick… I think there are at bats for everybody, field time as well. In fact we may see Cabrera at 2B for a couple of days with DJ at third. It’ll be interesting. One of those so/called “pleasant problems”. To be followed by “what happens when Berti comes back… |
