Call overturned, Volpe out. Bad start. For those who say never slide into first, that would have been the perfect time for Volpe to do it… In principle I also say always run through the bag. The problem with trying to implement the slide into first is by the time the runner realizes the throw is high and should slide, he's too close to the bag. Guerrero gets an 0-2 slider thigh high about 6 inches outside, and slaps it past Rizzo to his left, it goes into right field for a hit, Soto gets on it and holds it to a 1 out single.

Let’s not fault Rizzo on that hit…

Bichette quickly ahead 2-0. Guesses FB, gets a slider that nearly bounced well outside, 2-1. Sinker low, 3-1. Let's if the Jays send Guerrero. They do not, and the sinker misses outside, ball 4. Up comes Turner with 1st and 2nd and 1 out, and he has a very good record vs. Stroman, 4-12 with 2 doubles.

1-1. The problem for Stroman vs. Turner is that Turner is hard to fool unless you throw hard, and Stroman doesn't. 2-1 slider misses outside by at least 2 inches but Stroman gets the call anyway, should be 3-1, not 2-2. Sinker outside corner spoiled.

Slider is way outside, 3-2 and Stroman at 17 pitches already.

Okay!!! Big GIDP. Sinker in the zone low/away, and instead of going to right like he usually does, Turner tried to pull it and rolled over to Cabrera for the 5-4-3 to end the inning.
Top 2, 0-0. 18 pitches in the 1st for Stroman.
And for a change: Torres realized who was running, took his time, make sure of the transfer and got a strong throw off to Rizzo getting Tuner by two steps
Verdugo, Cabrera and Wells for the Yanks.

The way to attack Stroman is to take that outside slop he offers and force him to bring the ball in… He’s pitched every game off the outside corner, trying to tempt swings out of hitters…

93 FB is strike 1 96 FB is strike 2. Verdugo has a miserable record vs. Gausman. Gets a hittable FB just below the waist inner half, but misses and fouls it off. Split not just low and outside, making it an easy take, 1-2 2nd splitter stays over the plate but low, and Verdugo taps it to the right side, Guerrero comes way off, gloves and flips high going the other way, but Gausman able to reach back, catch and get to the bag, 1 down.

Fb up in the zone, swung under 0-1 FB inside corner thigh high, 0-2, that was the only good pitch you're getting Oswaldo. Slider just low, not sure how he took that. Might be sitting offspeed, in which case, a FB should be blown by him at some point. FB up and away, fouled off. splitter bounced, 2-2 FB tails just out of the middle, and Cabrera is late and under, pops to Varsho in short left, 2 down.

Vlad Jr never should have said he hates the Yankees and would never play for us. I can never root for him or wish him anything positive.

Did anyone notice that Verdugo carried his bat about a third of the way when running to first base? Can't run hard if you do that..

Splitter low and outside, ball 1 Splitter low again, 2-0 Taking splitters, might be vulnerable to fastballs. Takes the FB well outside at the top, 3-0. Takes something off the FB to get it over, and it hits the top of the zone, and Wells gets the call, ball 4.

Volpe guesses FB, gets the slider going well out of the zone, 0-1. Slider low/away again, Wells gets such a huge jump, and Kirk doesn't even throw, stolen base. Shorten up, Anthony. Splitter bounced. At some point I expect to see a FB low in the zone. Hope Volpe is ready when it comes.
