In the words of Rod Stewart, tonight’s the night. Schmidt goes 7 in a masterful performance as the Yankees offense explodes!… This is the year the Rays tumble. We own them… It would probably take Schmidt 150 pitches to make through 7. Maybe his usual 4.2??…

Now Schmidt has to finish the inning off. He'll keep pulling this crap until the wrong guy is up in the 4th, 5th or 6th inning and then comes the knockout blow. Every time he has an actual 1-2-3 inning on less than 15 pitches, I feel like putting on a party hat and blowing a New Year's Eve party horn. Pitch clock violation makes it 3-2. Sinker tails a bit back to the inside corner, freezing Schmidt for the ꓘ, inning over. Bottom 2, 0-0. 25 pitches for Schmidt in the 2nd, 43 through 2. Yeah, he's not must see TV, but we are stuck with him until Cole comes back.

Curve ball dives across the plate, Torres takes a big hack, is late and under, fouls it off, 1-2 FB inside corner, fouled off. Change well low, taken, 2-2 Took too long for Torres to realize that slider was going down the middle, and he's late and swings under for the K, 1 down.

I don't know what game Nelson is watching but the last pitch to Torres wound up right down the middle, nowhere near the outside corner Verdugo takes a strike on the outside corner, then a sinker in the zone low/away 3rd pitch is popped foul near the stands off 3rd, but Parades gets over and makes a nifty backhand grab, 2 down. Verdugo now 2-7 with a RBI vs. Alexander.

Trevino has never faced Alexander, takes a strike and a ball, 1-1.

FB into the top of the zone, inner 3rd, 1-2 Backdoor slider spoiled. Bounced slider, 2-2 FB up and in, 3-2 and Rizzo will be running. Well, mostly. Cutter down and in, and Trevino doesn't quite barrel it, flies out to medium deep left near the corner. Inning over. Bottom 2, 0-0, 24 pitches for Alexander in the 2nd, and he's also at 24 pitches.
Top of the order for the Rays in the 3rd, Diaz, Arozarena, and Palacios.

Trevino is quite strong, but the levers are short and he doesn’t elevate often…

1-2 on Diaz, and a slider outside is spoiled. Beats him with a cutter up and in for the K. 4th straight K, but 5 more pitches used.

Slider backs up inside, 1-0 Slider low, 2-0 on Arozarena. Takes a cutter on the outside corner, 2-1
His command isn't good enough for that, Nelson. His command isn't good enough for that, Mikey.
Cutter down the middle, fouled, 2-2 No chance curve outside, 3-2. Sigh. Good sharp slider low in the zone, swung over. 5th staight K, but again, SIX freakin' pitches to do it.

Did someone give Schmidt a kick in the arse? This is the aggressive pitcher he should be.

Palacios fouls off a first pitch cutter. Sinker into the top of the zone, taken, 0-2. How many pitches will he need to finish this guy?
