Judge has hit 3 homeruns in 10 AB's against Kremer. With Judge's power it doesn't matter all that much, but all three came before they moved the fence out from the LF corner to left-center.

Dean Kremer starts for the O's. Selected by the Dodgers in the 14th round of 2016 Rule 4 Draft, he was one of 5 players they traded to the Orioles for Manny Machado, before Machado went Free Agent and signed with the Padres. The other 4 have had brief MLB careers, and as far as I know, none of them is on a major league roster this season. After spending parts four seasons in the O's farm system, Kremer was called up for good in 2022, and has been making the deal pay off since then.
In parts of 5 major league seasons, Kremer is 23-22 with a 4.37 ERA. He pitched his best in 2022: 21 starts, 8-7 with a 3.23 ERA. Last year, with the O's rebuild finally taking off, he didn't pitch as well, but got better results: 32 starts, 13-5, 4.12 ERA, 172 2/2 inning, 171 hits, 85 runs, 79 earned, 27 HR, 55 Bb and 157 K's. HIs WHIP was a mediocre 1.309. But that season line doesn't really tell the story, because he had a bad 1st half: 8-4, 5.05 ERA in his first 17 starts, and was outstanding the rest of the way: 5-1 in 15 starts, with a 3.09 ERA and a WHIP under 1.2. So far this season, Kremer has been so-so. In 5 starts, he's 1-2 with a 4.61 ERA. In 27 1/3 innings, he's allowed 23 hits, 17 runs, 14 earned, 6 HR, 6 BB, and 27 K's. His WHIP this season is an outstanding 1.061, so his HRs allowed have probably had some multi-run shots among them.
Kremer has started 9 times against the Yanks in his career. He's 2-3 with a 5.04 ERA. In 44 2/3 innings, he's allowed 46 hits, 26 runs, 25 earned, 9 HR, 17 BB and K'd 54. His WHIP against them is a miserable 1.410. Last year, in 3 starts, he was 1-0 with 2 no-decision. He threw a brilliant game against them st the Stadium against them holding them to 4 hits in 7 innings while striking out 10 on July 5. They hit him decently in the other two, 3 runs in 4 innings in Baltimore on July 30, and 3 runs in 5 innings in Baltimore early in the season. His career quadruple slash line against the Yankees is .263/.330/.469/.799
Repertoire: Kremer, 4-pitch righty, has apparently made one major change to his repertoire, abandoning his change and moving to a splitter, but that could just be a Fangraphs/Statcast recoding of the same pitch. Aside from that, so far this, season, he's using his FB slightly less and his cutter and curve slightly more. Current pitch mix: FB averaging 93 about 45% of the time, cutter 87 about 28% of the time, and curve 78 and split 84-5, both used about 14% of the time.

Dean is just the 2nd "Kremer" in MLB history. The other one was Ray Kremer, one of the top two starters on the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that won the World Series in 1925 and got swept by the Murderers' Row Yankees in 1927. He led the NL in wins twice and in ERA twice.

For the Yankees, Nestor Cortes goes out to make his 7th start of the season. He's pitched well so far this season. Not as well as his peak in 2021-22, but he's managed to keep the Yanks in the game even when struggling.. He's 1-2 so far this year, with an ERA of 3.50. In 36 innings, he's allowed 31 hits, 14 runs, all earned, 5 HR, 5 BB and has struck out 32. He's gone at least 7 in 3 of his last 4 starts. Among the other 4 starters, only Rodon has managed to do that, just once. We all know his game, fastballs and cutter in, up and up and in to generate whiffs and popups/flyballs from righties and sliders and changes away for weak contact and called strikes. Against lefties, he still tries to bury the FB in, or up and in, get them to chase sliders low and away.
Tonight will be Cortes' 8th start and 10th appearance vs. the O's. He's pitched extremely well against them, but this is a much better O's lineup than he's faced for most of his career. He's 4-0 vs. Baltimore, with a 1.99 ERA. In 45 1/3 innings, he's allowed 30 hits, 10 runs, all earned, 4 HR, 12 BB and he's K'd a ton of them, 61. His 12.1 K/9 vs. the O's is higher than against any other team he's started more than 1 games against, except Texas. His WHIP against the O's is an outstanding 0.927, and as you might expect, their team quadruple slash line against him is a meager .186/.241/.278/.519. Last year, he pitched a solid game against them in early April, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs in 5 1/3, getting the win, but he faced them again after he hurt the shoulder, and they got to him for 2 HR, 5 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings in a no-decision in late May. He made just 2 more starts in 2023 after that one.

Yanks' lineup vs. Kremer
Volpe is 0-5 with 1 BB and 2 K Soto is 0-2 with a BB Judge is 4-10 with 3 HR, 4 RBI, and 4 K, but all 3 HRs came before they moved the fence back in left Stanton is 5-14 with 5 K and a GIDP Rizzo is 1-10 with 5 K and 1 HBP Torres is 5-17 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI, 1 BB and 3 K Cabrera is 1-2 Wells has never faced him; Trevino is 2-3 witha a BB Grisham is 0-1 with a BB.
The absence of Verdugo on paternity leave is going to hurt the lineup again tonight because he has an outstanding record vs. Kremer: 7-21, 2 doubles, 2 HR, 6 RBI, and 5 K. Hope the geniuses in analytics don't get it into their heads to give Trammell a start tonight. He's 0-5 against Kremer with 3 K's and 1 GIDP.
==============

Yesterday, the Yanks offense got shut down again, their 5th shutout against in just 30 games, losing 2-0 to the O's. The Jays hung on for a 6-5 win over the Royals. Ryan Pepiot and 3 Rays' relievers combined for a 3 hit, 12 K whitewash of the Brewers in Milwaukee, 1-0. The Red Sox had the night off. As a result, the O's moved back into first by percentage points over the Yanks, both teams at 8 games over .500. The Sox are now 2 1/2 games back of both. The Rays and the Jays both gained a game on the Yanks; the Jays in 4th, 4 games back, and the Rays in 5th, 5 games back.
Elsewhere for the other three teams in the East, tonight... The Jays host the Royals at 7:07 in Toronto. A duel of aces: Cole Reagans for the Royals and Jose Berrios for the Jays Berrios is off to a Cy Young start, 4-1 with a 1.23 ERA in 6 starts.. The Rays are in Milwaukee to face the Brewers at 7:40. Tyler Alexander, who pitched a good game vs. the Yanks will square off against the Brewers' current ace, Freddy Peralta.. At 7:10, the Giants will open their series in Fenway, throwing their current ace, Alex Webb, against Sox' rookie righty, Cooper Criswell. Criswell was inserted into the Sox rotation after injuries to Bello, Pivetta and Whitlock got all of them put on the IL.

Dean "Non-Dairy" Kremer has given up 9 home runs in 9 games to the Yankees in his career. Last season, he wore us out in one game that I recall. With the Yankees coming off a shutout, in which there were several hard hit balls for nought, I think the bats will get to him tonight.
