Kyle Bradish is being activated off the IL to start his first game of the season for the Orioles in the series finale. Drafted by the Angels in the 4th round of the 2018 Rule 4 Draft, he was traded with three other players to the Orioles for pitcher Dylan Bundy. He was called up early in the 2022 season, with mediocre results, but he broke through last year with an excellent season, 12-7, 2.83 ERA in 30 starts. In 168 2/3 innings, he allowed just 132 hits, 54 runs, 53 earned, 14 HR, 44 BB and struck out 168. His WHIP was an elite 1.043, good for 4th in the AL, while the ERA was 3rd in the league. His 0.747 HR/9 was 2nd best in the league, behind only Sonny Gray of the Twins. Early on in spring training, he suffered a sprain of the UCL in his pitching arm, and he's been on a minor league rehab assignment since April 16th.
Bradish has made 4 starts against the Yanks in his two major league seasons. He's 1-1 with 2 no-decisions and an ERA of 3.54. In 20 1/3 innings, he's allowed 21 hits, 9 runs, 8 earned, 2 HR, walked 13 and struck out 19. His WHIP against the Yanks is a very high 1.672.. Last year, he made 2 starts vs. the Yanks. They got to him for 4 runs in 5 innings in a no-decision in a game the Yanks eventually won 6-5 in late May. Then he turned the tables on the Yanks in a 2nd start at the Stadium in early July, shutting them out on 3 hits for 6 innings, walking 2 and striking out 5. The O's clobbered the Yanks 14-1 in that game. The Yankees' team quadruple slash line vs. Bradish is .266/.366/.380/.745.
Repertoire: Bradish made a slight change to his pitch mix in his vastly more successful 2nd season, throwing his curve and slider a bit more and his fastball a bit. less. Last year, he was a 4-pitch righty: FB averaging 95 thrown about 43% of the time, slider at 88 about 31% of the time, curve at 85 about 17% of the time, and a change he uses about once every 3 batters that averages 91.

Playing the "name game" again.... Although there have been 13 players with the last name "Brady" in MLB history, Kyle is only "Bradish"...and the only Bradish in MLB history.

The Yanks send out Carlos Rodon, after a gosh-awful season late year, both often injured and performing terribly when healthy, Rodon made two key changes for this seasons. He's using his cutter much more and his change more as well, and he's trying Gerrit Cole's way of sitting 2-3 mph below his top velocity on his FB and "saving" his best fastball for key pitches in high leverage situations, and also for "emptying the tank" when he knows his pitching his last inning of the day. It didn't seem to be working well, as his performance was very uneven, but everything seemed to click in his last start against Brewers in Milwaukee last Friday: just 2 hits, 1 BB and a solo HR allowed in 6 innings with 8 K's. That's the closest he's looked to his dominating form in the 2021-22 seasons, when he was top 5 in the Cy Young voting both seasons. the challenge now? To repeat that level of performance on a consistent basis.
In 6 starts, Rodon is 2-1 with a 2.48 ERA. In 32 2/3 innings, he's allowed 25 hits, 9 runs, all earned, just 3 HR, walked 14 and struck out 30. His WHIP so far this season is a solid 1.194. In 5 career games and 4 starts against the Orioles, Rodon has had poor results: 0-2 with 4.37 ERA. In 22 2/3 innings, he's allowed 22 hits, 15 runs, 11 earned, 2 HR, 9 BB and struck out 28. His WHIP against the O's is 1.368. This will be his first ever start against the O's for the Yanks, and his last start against them was five years ago, so don't expect a great many at bats against Rodon by the current O's roster of hitters. The Orioles' team quadruple slash line against him is .244/.310/.389/.699

Yanks' lineup vs. Bradish
Volpe is 0-5 with a K Soto has never faced him before. Judge is 0-4 with 2 BB and 2 K Verdugo has never faced him either, which seems a bit strange. Stanton is 1-2 with a double, 1 RBI, 1 BB and 1 K Rizzo is 3-12 with a double, 1 RBI and 3 K Torres is 4-7 with 2 BB Cabrera is 2-4 with 1 BB and 1 K Trevino is 1-5, the one hit was a 3 run HR, and also 1 BB. Wells have never faced him before.
The only player who figures to be on the bench for the game who's ever faced Bradish before is Trammell, who's 1-2 against him with a double
==============
Orioles lineup vs. Rodon.
Only 3 players on the Orioles roster have ever batted against Rodon, and the only one likely to start against him is O'Hearn, who's faced him twice and walked twice. The only player on their bench who's faced Rodon is McCann, who's 2-13 against him with a 2 run HR, a BB and 3 K Who's the 3rd player on their roster that has batted against Rodon? Pitcher Corbin Burnes. In two PA vs. Rodon, he's K'd once and layed down a sac bunt in the other PA.

Yesterday, the Yanks' offense was quiet again, but Luis Gil and three relievers turned the tables on the O's , shutting them out on 3 hits and 2 BB with 10 K in a 2-0 win.
Elsewhere in the AL East last yesterday: The Brewers beat the Rays 7-1 in Milwaukee, Rea threw 6 shutout innings. The Royals beat the Jays again, 6-1, Seth Lugo threw 7 innings of 2-hit, 1-run ball, striking out 8. The Sox topped the Giants 6-2, Kutter Crawford giving up the 2 runs on just 4 hits and striking out 6 for the win.
As of this morning, the Yanks and O's are once again together atop the East at 8 games over .500, with the O's again percentage points in front. The Sox are 1 1/2 back in 3rd. The Jays are 5 games back in 4th, and the Rays remain in the basement, 6 games behind the O's and Yanks.

Hopefully Rodon can repeat his last start and the Yanks can get a split here.
