Reese Olsen starts for the Tigers. Olsen was a 13th round draft choice of the Brewers in the 2018 Rule 4 Draft. He was traded to the Tigers in 2021 in exchange for the past Tigers 2nd round pick, pitcher Daniel Norris. This is Olsen's 2nd MLB season. In his rookie year last year, he was 5-7 in 18 starts and 21 appearances, with a respectable ERA of 3.99. In 103 2/3 innings, he gave up 83 hits, 49 runs, 46 earned, 14 HR, 33 BB and struck out 103. His WHIP was an excellent 1.119.
Olsen has made just one start against the Yanks. In late August last year in Detroit, he struck out 10 in 4 1/3 innings and held the Yanks scoreless until Gleyber Torres doubled in Aaron Judge, which knocked Olsen out of the game so early because he had already walked 4 batters, and thrown over 100 pitches to get to that point. It's only 1 start and 21 plate appearances of data, but the Yanks' quadruple slash line against Olsen is .177/.333/.235/.589
Repertoire: Olsen is a 4-pitch righty, and has made a slight change to his pitch mix this year; he's throwing his change about 50% more often, and reduced using his FB and slider some to allow that. So far this season, the pitch mix is FB averaging 94-5, and his relatively high ground ball rate and low HR rate makes me think that it might have some sinking action. He throws it about 44% of the time. He also has a slider 85 that he throws 26% of the time, a change 86-7 that he throws 24% of the time, and a curve he uses as a surprise pitch for his real change of speed, it averages 79 and he uses it about once an inning on average.
Playing the "name game" with Olsen....
He's just the 3rd player with the first name Reese in MLB history. One of them is Reese McGuire, currently on the Red Sox. The other "Reese" is a pretty much obscure righty who pitched all of 4 games for the Senators in 1934 by the name of Reese Diggs. He faced the Yanks in the last of his 4 MLB games in late September, 1934, and they knocked him out in the 2nd inning on a bunch of singles and walks, scoring 4 runs off him in 1+ innings on their way to 9-6 win.
1934 was Babe Ruth's last season with the Yanks, but he didn't face Diggs in this, the next to last day of the season. Ruth played his final game for the Yanks the next day, going 0-3 with a BB and a run scored in the season-ending 5-3 loss. The Yanks went 94-60 in 1934, finishing 7 games behind the Tigers, who went on to get beaten in the World Series by the Gas House Gang Cardinals, where brothers Dizzy and Paul Dean each won 2 of the 4 Cards victories.

The Yanks send out Marcus Stroman, looking to improve on his recent poor starts. Stroman started the season hot, throwing 6 shutout innings in back to back games, but has since allowed 23 hits, 13 runs, all earned, 5 HR, walked 12 and stuck out 22, in his last 4 starts. He hasn't gone past 5 1/3 innings in any of them. The Yanks offense bailed him out a couple of times, so he only took 1 loss in the 4 games. On the season, he's now 2-1 with a 3.69 ERA. In 31 2/3 innings, he's allowed 30 hits, 16 runs, 13 earned, 5 HR, 15 BB and 32 K, and his WHIP is a very bad 1.421. The worry here is the walk rate. He's been nibbling to avoid hard contact lately, and it's not working.
Stroman has made 5 starts against the Tigers in his career, and has pitched outstanding baseball against them. (Keep in mind the Tigers have been a bad team most of his career, finishing under .500 every year since 2016, and in only two of those seasons have they been within 10 games of .500 at year's end). Against Detroit, he's thrown 36 innings in those 5 starts, allowed just 22 hits, 8 runs, 7 earned, just 2 HR, just 8 BB and has struck out 36. His WHIP against the Tigers is an stellar 0.833. The caveat here is that he hasn't pitched against them since 2019, and they're a considerably better team now, while Stroman's stuff has diminished. The Tigers' team quadruple slash line against Stroman comes into this game at .176/.226/.246/.474

Yanks' lineup vs. Olson:
Volpe is 0-2 with a K Soto is 2-2 with 2 HR, 3 RBI and a BB Judge is 0-2 with 1 BB and 2 K Verdugo has never faced him Stanton is 1-2 with 1 K Rizzo has never faced him Torres is 1-2 with a double, 1 RBI, 1 BB and 1 K Wells has never faced him Cabrera is 1-2 with a double and 1 BB
The only player on the bench for the game who's ever faced Olson before is Grisham, who's struck out twice in 2 AB against him.
==============
Tigers' lineup vs. Stroman:
Only 3 players on the Tigers roster have ever batted against Stroman, which is why his past excellence against this is mostly irrelevant. Two of them are in the lineup:
Canha is 2-5 with a BB Baez is 3-9, with 1 double, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB and 1 K, although as Baez' hitting has gone downhill fast, his excellent numbers against Stroman end in 2021, which was his last good season to this point. If Stroman's pitching against "The Tigers" from 2019 and before is mostly irrelevant, then so should Baez' great numbers from 2021 and before against Baez be mostly disregarded until he shows he can still hit him.
On the bench, backup catcher Carson Kelly is 1-2 vs. Stroman with a K.

Yesterday, the Yanks' offense was quiet again, and O's offense wasn't and they soundly beat the Yanks 7-2, winning the series 3 games to 1. The Jays and Rays had yesterday off, but the Giants salvaged the final game of their series in Fenway, beating the Red Sox 3-1, as Kyle Harrison and four relievers combined to strike out 11 and give up just 4 hits.
Coming into tonight's games, the O's again lead the Yanks by 1 game, the Sox are still 1 1/2 back of the Yanks and 2 1/2 out of 1st. The Rays and Jays drop another 1/2 game back on the O's, but gain a half game on the Yanks and Red Sox. The Jays are now 4 1/2 back of the Yanks and 5 1/2 out of 1st and the Rays are now 5 1/2 behind the Yanks and 6 1/2 games out of 1st.
Elsewhere in the AL East tonight:
The O's are in Cincy to start a 3-game series vs. the Reds in a 6:10 start. Cole Irvin against righty flame thrower Hunter Greene. The Jays open a 3-game series against the Nationals in Washington at 6:45 pm. Yusei Kikuchi vs. veteran lefty Patrick Corbin. The Rays are home to launch a 3-game series vs. the Mets at 6:50 pm. Veteran lefty junkballer Jose Quintana for the Mets, Aaron Civale for the Rays, who are trying to turnaround a 2-8 skid in their last 10 games. The Red Sox begin a 3-game series against the Twins in Minnesota at 8:10 pm. Tanner Houck vs. Chris Paddack, Paddack is 2-1 so far this year, but his ERA is nearly 6.00 and he's allowed 38 hits in 26 innings so far.

To me, the Tigers look as though they’ve been pinching above their weight in what’s been a surprising start. It’s time a real heavyweight offense brings them back to earth. We have such an offense, but it seems it lacks consistency. The double play disease has been our kryptonite, with Judge’s shocking 10 being the only player in the AL with more than 6 hit into.
This is a game that we should win in a series we should win if we utilize a patient approach at the plate. Some games we do. Other games it seems we try to be geniuses and attack early in the count and we just fall away to the wayside.
It may come as a surprise, but the Yankees lead the AL in OBP, and that’s despite a rather modest .331… we just have to start cashing in on more opportunities…

offensively the tigers are in the bottom third. they have a .666 OPS (uh oh the devil's#) while we're at .729 putting us 8th. their pitching is what's kept them in it. #4 in ERA in the MLB right behind us. we have to reverse the trend and win 2 out of 3. in an unusual twist, the AL has the 5 teams with lowest ERA.

That's' true, but they're right behind the Yanks in ERA at 3.12 (4th). Yanks are 3rd at 3.07. Their rotation might be a bit better thanks to Skubal at the top.

Sinker in the zone low/away, grounded sharply to the right of 2nd, but Volpe playing that way, makes a sliding backhand stab, rolls over, gets up, throws a strike to Rizzo to get Greene. 1 down. Outstanding play to start things.
