Well at least Berti makes the bench a bit stronger. Boone has really stayed with a pretty consistent lineup all year. He's started to move some players a couple slots up or down to take advantage of the "hot" or maybe luke warm bat but he's generally running the same guys out there with the exception of the C platoon. May be a probuct of a really weak bench. My sheer conjecture is that when Judge sat down with management to echo concerns from players, a more static lineup was a point of emphasis. With the ubiquitous 13-man pitching staff, there is not much to a bench other than a catcher, an infielder, an outfielder, and a base stealer. When Carpenter was hot for half of one season, he was a weapon coming off the bench. The days of Rock Raines and Strawberry and Randy Velarde in reserve are fading into the distance. Yep, when/if DJ makes it back he probably replaces Jones with Cabrera going into the utility role. That will make the bench stronger as well but I'm not expecting that DJ returns to the player he was.

Playing the "name game" with Mize.... He's the 2nd player with the last name Mize in MLB; the first was the Hall of Fame slugger Johnny "Big Jawn" Mize, who's in the top 100 in MLB history in career BAVG, HR and RBI and in the top 20 all-time in slugging and OPS. He was a key backup/bench player on the famous 1949-1953 Yankees, the only team in MLB history to win 5 World Series in a row. Only those Yankee teams could have Johnny Mize as a bench player (granted ages 36-40). A vastly underrated Hall of Famer with a 158 OPS+ for his career, who lost over three full seasons to WWII between the ages of 29 and 33 - generally considered a baseball player's prime. After returning from the war, he led all of baseball in 1946 with 51 homers, 138 RBIs, and 137 runs. And, Mize wasn't legging out any hits, despite the sobriquet of "The Big Cat," due to a devastating leg injury he suffered in 1934. Teammates said Mize never swung at a bad pitch (Juan Soto like). Mize held the single-season home run record for the Cardinals until it was broken by Mark "I Plead The Fifth" McGwire in 1998. When he retired after the 1953 season, Mize’s 359 career home runs ranked sixth all-time. He also had a .312 career batting average, .397 on-base percentage, 2,011 hits, and 1,337 RBIs over 15 major-league seasons. Altogether, Mize had won five World Series titles, been selected for 10 all-star games, won a batting title, and finished in the top five of the MVP voting four times, including two runner-up finishes.

For those who are Star Wars fans, May 4th is "Star Wars Day", because of the pun/misheard "lyric" on the famous line from the original movie, "May the fourth be with you".
For those who are fans of the Knicks, today is the 54th anniversary of the famous Game 5 of the Finals in 1970, where Willis Reed tripped and fell and tore a muscle in his thigh/hip, and had to leave the game, the Knicks fell behind by as many as 16, and then rallied to beat the Lakers anyway to take a 3-2 lead in the series.
For those who are history buffs, earlier that same day and year in Ohio, at Kent State University, the tragic Kent State shootings took place.

And just like that, the Tigers match their run total from last night.

Sinker well outside at 95. Flies open again, and misses even further outside with a sinker at 94. 2-0
Schmidt leaves a 2-0 cutter in the drop the bat happy zone down and in, and Greene jumps all over it, driving it into the Porch in right for a solo HR, 1-0 Tigers.
Welp, O'Neill asked him to do it again, i.e., match his last starts vs. the O's and so far Schmidt is doing exactly that. He gave up a leadoff HR in Baltimore as well.

Canha takes a ball, a strike, and then Schmidt gets a gift call on a sinker about 3-4 inches outside, 1-2 Curve in a bad location near the middle of the zone, Canha hits a fliner to right, but Soto gets to it, 1 down.

Have you noticed that people don't write great protest songs anymore.

Perfect sinker on the low outside corner, 0-1 And tell me this isn't Schmidt all over. After making that perfect pitch, he hits Carpenter on the back knee with a curve well inside. Man on 1st, 2 down for Vierling.

Slider in the zone low/away to Vierling Sweeper well outside, 1-1 Cutter in almost the same spot, 2-1 Cutter gets a tiny piece of the high outside corner, Schmidt gets the call, 2-2 Sweeper well outside again, 3-2. Have no idea what Vierling was looking for, but he gets a slider that stays thigh high in the middle of the zone, and just stares at it for strike 3. ꓘ, inning over. Bottom 1, 1-0 Tigers 20 pitches in the 1st for Schmidt.

Volpe takes a FB for a strike, then pulls a 2nd one up and in foul, 0-2 Slider outside, and Volpe does the wrong thing, rolls over on it, the slow bouncer to the left side is cut off my McKinstry, who throws him out by a step. 1 down.
