Well at least Berti makes the bench a bit stronger. Boone has really stayed with a pretty consistent lineup all year. He's started to move some players a couple slots up or down to take advantage of the "hot" or maybe luke warm bat but he's generally running the same guys out there with the exception of the C platoon. May be a probuct of a really weak bench.

Casey Mize starts for the Tigers. Mize was the first pick of the entire 2018 Rule 4 Draft. He quickly moved through the minors and pitched briefly for the Tigers in 2020. In 2021, he was in the rotation for the entire season and pitched pretty well, 7-9 with a 3.71 ERA. After just 2 starts in 2022, he was put on the IL with an elbow sprain in his pitching arm. Eventually that diagnosis gave way to a torn UCL and Tommy John surgery. The recovery took the rest of 2022 and all of 2023. Finally healthy this year, he's made 5 starts, and is 1-0 with a 3.08 ERA. In 26 1/3 innings, he's allowed 26 hits, 1 HR, 10 runs, 9 earned, with just 6 BB, but also with just 18 K. His K/9 of 6.2 is 5th lowest in the AL among 64 pitchers who've made at least 5 starts.
Mize has made just one start against the Yanks. In late May of 2021, he went 5 innings in a start against them in Detroit. He gave up 5 hits, 1 run, a solo HR, struck out 7 and walked none, in a no-decision in a game the Tigers eventually won, 3-2. It's just 20 PA, but the Yanks' quadruple slash line against them is .250/.250/.450/.700
Repertoire: Mize is a 4-pitch righty, and has made one slight change to his pitch mix since his only full season in 2021; he's throwing his FB 6% less of his pitches, and his splitter in 6% more of them. The 4 pitches: FB averaging 95-6 about 45% of the time, slider at 86 about 27% of the time, splitter also at 86 about 19% of the time, and his real "change of pace" is a curve at 80 that he uses about 9% of the time.

Playing the "name game" with Mize.... He's the 2nd player with the last name Mize in MLB; the first was the Hall of Fame slugger Johnny "Big Jawn" Mize, who's in the top 100 in MLB history in career BAVG, HR and RBI and in the top 20 all-time in slugging and OPS. He was a key backup/bench player on the famous 1949-1953 Yankees, the only team in MLB history to win 5 World Series in a row.

The Yanks send out Clarke Schmidt looking to keep his momentum going after throwing his best start so far this season against the O's in Baltimore on Monday. He gave up only a leadoff HR to Gunnar Henderson in 5 2/3 innings, his longest outing this year. In 6 starts, Schmidt is 2-1 with an nifty, if deceptively low, 3.19 ERA. In 31 innings, he's allowed 30 hits, 12 runs, 11 earned , 4 HR, 13 BB and 34 K. His WHIP is a not-so-nifty 1.387.
In his career, Schmidt has made 2 starts and 2 relief appearances against the Tigers. He's 2-0 with a 4.11 ERA against them, pitching 15 1/3 innings, and allowing 14 hits, 7 runs, all earned, 1 HR, 5 BB, but with 20 K. He made two starts against the Tigers last year, in back to back starts. On 8/31 he gave up 3 runs in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision; the Yanks lost that game 4-3. In his next start, he had his 2nd longest outing of the season, 6 1/3 innings of 3 run ball with 6 K's and 0 BB, and got the win in a 4-3 Yankees' victory. The Tigers' quadruple slash line against him is .233/.303/.317/.620

Yesterday, the Yanks' offense was quiet again...very quiet....dead silent....for 8 innings, and then, from out of nowhere, they strung together 3 singles and a double to score 2 runs and come from behind to win, 2-1 on Rizzo's walkoff single through the drawn-in infield. After a lengthy rain delay, Cole Irvin and three relievers combined for a 2-hit shutout as the O's beat the Reds 3-0. The Nationals pasted the Jays 9-3. The Rays outslugged the Mets 10-8, and with 6 shutout innings from starter Chris Paddack, the Twins beat the Red Sox 5-2.
Coming into today's games, the O's still lead the Yanks by 1 game, the Sox are now 2 1/2 back of the Yanks and 3 1/2 out of 1st, the Rays have climbed out of the cellar and are 5 1/2 back of the Yanks and 6 1/2 behind the O's and now it's the Jays' turn in the cellar, 6 1/2 behind the Yanks and 7 1/2 out of 1st. .
Elsewhere in the AL East on Saturday
The Red Sox and Twins play the 2nd game of their series in Minnesota at 2:10 pm. Lefty Brennan Bernadino makes his 2nd start for the Sox against Twins' ace Pablo Lopez..
The Jays and Nats play their 2nd game in Washington at 6:45 pm. Yusei Kikuchi vs. veteran lefty Patrick Corbin.
The O's and Reds play their 2nd game in Cicny at 6:40 pm. John Means finally comes off the IL to make his 1st start this season for Baltimore, Lefty Andrew Abbot goes for the Reds as they try to do the Yanks a favor and even the series.
The Mets and Rays play their 2nd game in Tampa at 7:15 pm. Elite rookie pitching prospect Christian Scott is being called up for his 1st MLB start for the Mets. Ex-Yankee prospect Zack Littell goes for the Rays.

In the NL
Mookie Betts leads in WAR at 3.1 And in BAVG at ..363 And in OBA at .466 and in OPS at 1.066 And in PA with 161, and hits with 49 and like Soto, he leads in walks, times on base and almost all the sabermetric candidates. Suffice it to say, Betts is still the front runner for the MVP Award. Acuna of the Braves has passed Betts and lead in runs scored with 30. On the power side, Ohtani is leading in slugging at .612, in total Bases with 82, in doubles with 14, and in extra base hits with 22. Among AL pitchers Kutter Crawford of the Red Sox now leads in pitching bWAR with 1.9 Berrios still leads in ERA at 1.44 Seth Lugo of the Royals leads in wins with 5 Although 3 of them are Yankees, I'm not going to name the 25 starters who are tied with 7 games started. Tanner Houck of the Red Sox leads in innings at 45 1/3 Jack Flaherty of the Tigers leads in K's with 50; the Yanks don't face him this series. and in K/9 at 12.5 Tarik Skubal leads the AL in WHIP at 0.736. Zac Eflin of the Rays leads in BB/0 at just 0.878 There are still 4 complete games, 2 of which are CG shutouts, but I won't list those, yet. The Yanks' Luis Gil still leads in BB allowed with 20, but he's now tied with Joe Boyle of the A's and Marcus Stroman (!!). Berrios, Lugo, Houck and Skubal lead most of the sabermetric measures And Clay Holmes of the Yanks leads in saves with 10.

May be a probuct of a really weak bench. My sheer conjecture is that when Judge sat down with management to echo concerns from players, a more static lineup was a point of emphasis. With the ubiquitous 13-man pitching staff, there is not much to a bench other than a catcher, an infielder, an outfielder, and a base stealer. When Carpenter was hot for half of one season, he was a weapon coming off the bench. The days of Rock Raines and Strawberry and Randy Velarde in reserve are fading into the distance.
