I don't ever expect Stanton to pull an MVP type season out his ass again. That would be absurd to expect that going forward. If he hits between 30-40 dingers with a 130-140OPS+ I'll be estatic. Throw in a season or two where he exceeds those numbers and he's A HOF caliper player. I was gonna make another point but my brains fried. I haven't slept in literally two nights with a couple hour long naps during the day... LOL, sounds like me during my high school years and all the way through my forties. I would usually only sleep 1-3 hours per night. Then, on the weekend, I'd wind up getting out of bed at 12:00 noon, pissed off because I had wasted my day off sleeping...Well, my half day off. I had week end jobs, too...

Most of mine was in the bed, unable to sleep...I did roam about a bit. Sometimes I'd just get in my car and drive. Hell, has was like 34 cents a gallon back then. You could drive all week on $4.00...That was a full tank...

Even when i got my license I would fill up on E... gas light on.. and it would cost me about $13. Usually was 89 cents a gallon. I remember when it hit a buck and everyone was freaking out haha. Kill to get those days back for so many reasons.

Just so you can giggle at me, I can tell you that when I first got my license and was driving my ragged out old 1963 Rambler Classic the gas light had not yet been invented...We had to look at the gas gauge...

I had plenty of vehicles without gas lights. And I been notorious for running out of gas. I always waited till the last possible second to get gas.. hence the gas light always coming on

I have to admit Stanton looks lost at the plate right now. He's swinging at a lot of bad pitches. I still have faith that the MVP in him will show up eventually. And when that happens.... lookout Tanaka!!! I'm holding onto my faith with Stanton as well. Don't know how much longer I can hold on though. He looks more than lost. He said the other day he refuses to change his stance mid season bc it's too difficult... He'll just make minor tweaks. I really think that stance.. no matter how effective last year.. is the culprit of his suckitude... He should be as closed as Romine is if he wants to maintain a closed stance. (Who here would ever think someone would mention Romine and mimicking something he does on offense). I believe it was actually Stanton that told Romine to close off his stance on spring training... That's strange because I thought he did change his stance mid season this year after struggling to start the year. Could be wrong as usual.

He's been with that closed stance ever since. Didn't change it this year.

So the reality may be that the stance has little to do with anything, except for the mental advantage it may give Stanton if he believes in it. He runs hot and cold, so if he changed his stance and just happened to get hot, then perhaps he believes in something that really doesn't matter. Not only that, but of course after he went on the rampage last year every pitcher, pitching coach, manager and popcorn vendor in the league watched film and adjusted their approach to him...

Getting back to the subject of how the Red Sox have kept winning...which was in another thread, but seems to fit well here. After looking at the team, it goes back to an old adage about starting pitching being 75% or 70% or whatever number they used to say it was of the game. The Sox have one heck of a consistent bunch of starters, at least four of them. I always argued that the adage was incorrect, and I still say that the game is made up of two elements that are each worthy of 50%, offense and defense. Pitching is simply a part of the defense, but it IS still quite important...and it may be 70% of the defense...
The Sox are getting little offense out of their catcher, their second baseman (Noonie), or their CF...The 3B, while hitting for power is not getting on base or hitting for an average...Their bullpen may be over-performing much in the mirror image of the Yankees occasional under performance of their pen has been...with Kelly and Barnes totaling 54 innings with only 28 hits allowed to bridge to Kimbrel who has been his nasty old self in most games when not facing the Yankees this season...

The Red Sox starters are 4th in the AL with an ERA of 3.76 (that went up today with Beeks giving up 6 ER in 4 innings) while the Yankees starters are 5th in the AL with an ERA of 3.94.

Okay I calculated it. After Beeks' start today Boston starters have an ERA of 3.87.
