The only other point I have is that overall, none of Boston's big four have sucked...At times, we've had suckage from Gray...and German...I still don't get it, the Sox have a couple of black holes in their lineup...But, that's life I suppose. We'll knock them off that pedestal in September, just like the good old days...

Revisiting this thread as I saw something on MLB network and they talked up JD Martinez. May possibly opt out of his contract because he might get more on the open market because he is becoming one of the best hitters in the MLB.
Made me think of this thread and I forgot the explanations here so I wanted to revisit it and refresh my memory. Seems we were only a 1/3 of the way through the season when I brought it up. Now that the season is over I don't think it was even close. 1/3 of the way through people were saying the two players were close at the time. He was a free agent out there for anyone to grab. If we were more patient maybe we could've gotten him. Plus his contract was pretty reasonable. Only 5 years at age 30. I like that contract better than the one with Stanton.

I’m stubbornly sticking to my guns. I expect a better year from Stanton, and respect his fielding. Martinez does one thing, and admittedly he does it very well. He hits. He stinks in the field. I prefer players that can play in the field...

If it is realistic that the NL will go DH - and I think that’s an easy concession for the league in the next labor dispute - then for sure he gets more if he opts out.

And he does add value in the field, which Martinez cannot do. I hope they rest him enough from playing the OF that he’s healthy all year this year.

I prefer players that can play in the field... I guess we'll see going forward. Stanton did DH about 1/2 the season so Martinez could've DH'd much more making the fielding portion almost moot. Not quite, but almost. Just like how his strikeout rate went down after this season and how he hit over .300 in 4 out of his last 5 season. Our fantasy draft has strikeouts added which most fantasy leagues do not as well as other categories. I wonder if this has skewed my value of him. In our league Martinez got drafted before Stanton and that's Stanton coming off his MVP season so someone else in our league valued him better as well. Does WAR measure fielding as well? I see that Martinez is ranked 15. Was surprised to see Aaron Nola #2. Stanton was not in the top 50. I just hate the red sux so much that I'm sick we didn't go after him as he was one of my favorite players as you can tell. Had him on my fantasy team the year before. He was a steal where I drafted him. I think 9th round.

I’m not knocking fantasy leagues, and many people find great joy in them, but there is nothing “real” about the values in those leagues compared to the actual game. Martinez is an almost “too good to be true” late career sucess story and if his story of hard work and video monitoring is true then he’s also to be admired for his work ethic. On the other hand, in addition to being nearly incapable afield I also understand he’s ponderously slow afoot (little matter if the ball leaves the park). As with most Red Sox hitters, his batting average is surely aided by Fenway Park. Conversely, Yankee Stadium tends to inhibit batting average. Stanton, as mentioned previously by myself and Great Fatness, is much more athletic, can play the field well and runs much better than his size would lead one to believe. Plus, he had for him... a bad year... So I’ll agree with your statement, we’ll see going forward. Just make sure you look beyond those fantasy numbers and even beyond simple offensive production to evaluate the “whole player”...and keep such things as the ball park factor in mind...

One additional note, both Martinez and Stanton have a poor history for staying on the field. For that reason, both make me a bit nervous...As a GM, I might have passed on both for that reason alone...
