Looks like it's another nasty weather day in the Bronx. Get the W and rest because there are 2 big series coming up.

Tigers' ace Tarilk Skubal goes for Detroit in the series finale, weather permitting. The forecast has gotten worse since I looked at it at the end of the game on Saturday. It now appears that there will be rain throughout the hours the game should take place. Not a heavy rain, but a steady one. Probability of precipitation is 80-85% all game long, according to the National Weather Service and a little bit over a tenth of an inch of rain is forecast to fall in the period between 11 am and 5 pm. There is some talk of postponing, and moving the game to Monday, as both teams have the day off, and the weather forecast is now considerably better for Monday. Most of the rain should be over sometime Monday morning.

Skubal was a 9th round draft choice by the Tigers in the 2018 Rule 4 Draft, and made light speed rise through their system: just 22 innings in Rookie ball, low A and class A in 2018, and 122 2/3 innings in high A and AA in 2019. And then he was in the majors for the COVID season of 2020. He's been in the majors every year since, getter better each season. His only full season was 2021; he missed 1/3 of the 2022 season with a torn flexor tendon on his left that ended his season and cost him half of last year. Despite rehabbing the injury, he was brilliant in his 15 starts; 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA. In 80 1/3 innings, he allowed just 58 hits, 28 runs, 25 earned, gave up just 4 HR and 14 BB and struck out 102, for a K/9 of 11.4 and a K/BB of 7.3. Had he been healthy and pitched like that the entire season, he might have challenged Gerrit Cole for the Cy Young Award.
This year, he's one of the top 3-5 starters in the AL. In 6 starts, he's 4-0 with a 1.72 ERA,. In 36 2/3 innings, he's allowed just 21 hits, 9 runs, 7 earned, 2 HR, walked 6 and struck out 41. He's 5th in ERA, 2nd in wins, 1st in WHIP at 0.736, 4th in Hits/0, 7th in BB/9, 9th in K/9, 6th in HR/9 and 6th in K/BB, and he's in the top 5 or 6 in all the sabremetric measures as well.
He's made 3 starts vs. the Yankees in his carrel. He's 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA. In 15 innings, he's allowed 12 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, 5 HR, 7 BB and 18 K, and his WHIP is 1.267. His only start last year vs. the Yanks was a 6-inning loss in which he gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned on 2 HR, walked 2 and struck out 9. The Yanks quadruple slash line against him is .218/.318/.527/.845.
Repertoire: Skubal is a 4-pitch lefty who's made one small change to his pitch mix: his throwing his fastball a bit more and his slider a bit less. This year so far: FB averaging 96 about 53% of the time, the key offspeed is a change about 85 he throws 27% of the time. He also has a slider 88 that he throws 14% of the time and a curve 78-9 that he uses about once and inning.

Playing the "name game" with Skubal... He's a double unique. There are no other MLB players in history with either the first name Tarik or the last name Skubal.

The Yanks send Nestor Cortes looking to turn things around after his poor start against the O's on Tuesday. In 7 starts this season, Nestor is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA. In 42 innings, he's allowed 39 hits, 18 runs, all earned, 5 HR and 7 BB with 37 K's. His WHIP so far is 1.095
In his career, Nestor has pitched twice against the Tigers; once in relief, and the 2nd time as a starter. He got hit hard in the start in 2019, but pitched pretty well in the relief outing 3 years ago. Overall in 6 innings total, he's allowed 9 hits, 6 runs, 3 earned, 0 HR, 5 BB and struck out 5. His WHIP against them is over 2.000 in a tiny sample, and the Tigers' quadruple slash line against Cortes is .346/.452/.385/.836

Yesterday, the Yanks offense broke out a bit against Mize, scoring more than 2 runs for the first time since last Sunday in Milwaukee to back Clarke Schmidt to a 5-3 victory. Twins' ace Pablo Lopez and 4 relievers held the Red Sox to 1 run while striking out 12 in a 3-1 win in Minnesota. Kevin Gausman struck out 8 in 5 1/2 shutout innings, and five relievers got the Jays the rest of the way home in a 6-3 win over the Nats in Washington, D.C. John Means came off the IL to throw 7 shutout innings of 3 hit ball, striking out 8 and walking one, and Yennier Cano got Craig Kimbrel out out a jams in the 9th, as the O's held on to beat the Reds 2-1 in Cincy. In his first MLB start, the Mets got a brilliant effort from highly-touted rookie Christian Scott, giving up just 1 run in 6 1/3 innings while striking out 8, but still lost to the Rays 3-1 in Tampa.
Elsewhere in the AL East on Sunday:
The Jays and Nats play their 3rd and final game in Washington at 1:35 pm. Alex Manoah will try to put his broken pieces back together for the Jays in his 1st start of the season. Former uber-prospect MacKenize Gore, finally turning the corner and pitching up to the scouting reports from his minor league days goes for the Nats.
The Mets and Rays play their final game in Tampa at 1:40 pm. Luis Severino is 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA and is pitching close to what he was doing in his two great Yankees seasons, 2017 and 2018. The key player that came back to Tampa in the Glasnow traded, Ryan Pepiot, pitches for the Rays.
The Red Sox and Twins play their finale at 2:10 pm in Minnesota . Rookie Cooper Criswell makes his 4th start this season for the Sox, four-year veteran Joe Ryan will go for the Twins..
The O's and Reds wrap up their series in Cincy at 4:10 pm Dean Kremer who shut the Yanks down in the 2nd game in Baltimore pitches for the O's, and highly regarded prospect Nick Lodolo, pitching brilliantly in 3 starts since coming off the IL< goes for the Reds.
