I'm not sure what we have in Schmidt, but, wow! Remember when just getting past the 5th was such an ordeal for Schmidt?

Splitter bounced inside, 2-2 FB outside near the top, Verdugo goes after it with a controlled swing, lifts a fliner to medium deep left, Kirilof catches, and Soto scores without a play, 5-0 Yanks! Judge holds 2nd with 2 down.

It does. Good afternoon, pres. ...I have this terrible feeling of deja vu... (old Monty Python sketch) Torres falls behind 0-2, then swings over a splitter low for the K. Inning over.

Sands came in to pitch the 7th for the Twins, and I missed that. Corrected now.

Slider outside to Castro. Bad slider in the middle above the knees, Castro is early and pulls it hard into the stands off 1st. Swings under that cutter into the top of the zone. Not sure why, but a lot of hitters swing under that. Must be the spin and carry, I guess. 1-2 cutter about 2 inches above the last one, and again, swings under it for the K. 1 down.

Slider just below middle, taken 0-1 on Santana Curve down and in taken, 1-1 Cutter at the top, missed under again, though Santana fouled it back, 1-2 Curve drops to the knees, Santana taps it in front of the mound. Schmidt comes in, barehands, but throws sidearm and it tails into the runner. Rizzo smartly chooses not to have him arm broken in this situation, and it gets away, hitting Santana who stays at 2st on the E-1.

Cutter on the backdoor 0-1 to Kiriloff Slider backs up outside, 1-1 Cutter turns inside, swung over, 1-2 Also swings over the curve on the back leg for the K, 2 down.

Blake goes out to give Schmidt a breather before what might well be his last batter. Gonzalez warming. Margot up. Cutter outside, ball 1

Cutter backs up but bends onto the inside corner, 1-1 Cutter outside, waist high, Rizzo goes well back into foul ground, calls for it with Torres racing into the picture right behind him and backhands the catch near the stands to end the inning.
Seven innings for Schmidt, a new career-high! And seven strong shutout innings. If that was his last pitch today, 15 in the 7th and 92 total.
Top 8, 5-0 Yanks. Steve Okert, the lefty slider guy, comes in to pitch the 8th for the Twins to face Rizzo, Wells and Berti.
