Chi, Doc Rivers started backtracking this afternoon on Simmons after saying earlier that he "didn't know" what his future as point guard would be. Maybe the Sixers just don't want to drive down his trade value, or maybe they feel they've invested so much in him that they will sink or swim with him. How did you become a Sixers fan? I know Pittsburgh didn't have an NBA team. Was it Dr. J who brought you into the fold? Those 76er teams with Malone, Cheeks, Dr. J, Andrew Toney, McGinnis, Dawkins, and Bobby Jones were tough and talented. Unfortunately, Boston had a guy named Bird, who kept them out of the finals time and time again. Bird came to a last place Celtics team that had won 29 games the year before he got there and won 61 games his rookie year. That was before McHale and Parrish or Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge. Essentially the same team as the year before…except for Larry Bird.

I've kinda gotten to like the NBA. It's a different game, for sure, but the athleticism is incredible. The thing is, started watching it because college hoops has become unwatchable due to refs calling fouls on nearly every single play where there's any contact at all. Then the announcers go out of their way to explain how "he got him with the body" or "he brushed his jersey" to excuse the call and why we're watching the 63rd free throw of the game. Can't play any defense. In the NBA, if the defender gets some ball, play on.

I count seven steps. How many did you get? But the Hot Potato Rules were not in effect, so it’s all right…Doesn’t the defense have to yell “hot potato”? Or do I have the wrong game?…

That and many villains to root against.

That and many villains to root against. Part of the reason that the athleticism “appears” incredible is that the players no longer have to play by the rules. Being able to cradle the ball on the move yet continue the dribble, admittedly, looks amazing, but it’s carrying. The hand is supposed to stay on top of the basketball. Not having to keep a pivot foot on the ground has greatly improved explosiveness, but it’s traveling. Instead of setting a screen or using footwork, more often players simply push off to gain a passing lane to get open. Off side defense is nonexistent, which is one glaring reason dunks are so prevalent and - for most of the game - uncontested. Not much different than a dunking contest during a play. It would be interesting to see the current crop of athletes to have to play with the actual rules being enforced. My guess is that other parts of the game would eventually become important again, like passing, mid-range shooting, big men playing with their back to the basket, defensive rotations, baseline defense, screen and rolls, etc. You’d think with much better athletes, shooting a free throw would be easy now. I wonder why that isn’t the case.

No, I agree. I’ve heard many of them are connected to the porn industry. Some are quite manly looking in places that they haven’t had plumped up with Botox and other “plumpers”. I don’t get what he sees in them. I told him, I don’t want any woman that can beat me up… Some nice looking golfer chicks these days, but I can’t watch just to look at rear ends…

Hardly anyone shoots the consistent mid range jumper anymore.

Simmon's is a max contract players and about to get really expensive, so the Sixers need to get this figured out. Growing up near Williamsport, the Sixers were the only NBA we could watch regularly (this was the pre-cable days, so there were no games on ESPN or TNT). I helped they were really good, but they just couldn't get past the Celtics until the added Moses Malone and they had that magical 1982 season. They were sill waiting for another title!!!

MMA is not professional wrestling. It takes years and years to become a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), and most professionally trained fighters have proficiency in more than one martial art; hence, the name mixed martial arts. Most are trained in Muy Thai Kick Boxing and BJJ. Many have been in gymnastics and martial arts since they were in primary school.

It was the WWE “ladies” that I had read were connected. And Melky and Matsui…

Do you remember those "We owe you one" ads with Julius Erving? When they swept the Lakers to win the championship, the most visibly intoxicated guy at the celebration was seldom-used backup center Mark McNamara.
