Well, SOMEBODY got a lot more likely...and perhaps a bit more expensive. At least Tanaka has some surgeon that reconnects his arm in between starts, so we don't have to worry about him...And CC has a brace on his knee that can support 450 pounds, so we don't have to worry about him, and...
The way I see it, there is enough excess talent on the farm that we can spare some of it to nab a young, cost controlled pitcher from a non-contender. The team needs a real upgrade, and should be looking for another potential #2 starter, at least a #3. We should spend that youthful talent on a pitcher that has potential to hang around for a few seasons at the top of his game...There is a time to be tight, and a time to spend. This is one of the times that the team needs to spend...

How are you guys feeling about German at this point? I think he's been a bit inconsistent, as young pitchers tend to be, but I believe him to be the real deal...I think he'll be a solid mid-rotation guy at the very least. I think he'll start to settle in by August or so and show some consistency...
His stats really suck as a starter; 0-3; 6.33. Also if you take away his first start, the six no-hit, shout out innings..."shudder"... 0-3; 8.14 with 19 ER in 21 innings...Yikes! Why do I believe in him? I don't know. I just do...

I think he has a major league arm, but he struggles when there's runners on base. Seems like a mental issue that he'll have to clear up.

He definitely has the stuff. He struggles with fastball command at times. I believe in him too. Let's show some patience with him.

I'm going to throw some names out at you guys...Some names of good young pitchers on teams that may want to build up their farm at the trade deadline...
From Oakland:
Mengden Menaea
From KC:
Jacob Junis
Chicago A.L.:
Reynaldo Lopez
All of the above are from the AL, are 24 or 25 years old and would seem to beat the hell out of getting Hamels or even "shudder" Fister from Texas...What I like about Mengden and Junis is that they're young and already are pitching with excellent control. On the flip side, Lopez has shaky control, but has been very hard to barrel up for base hits
There is a wild hair idea that maybe the Marlins would part with this young pitcher they have named Caleb Smith, who is leading their team in wins and K'ing over 11 per 9 innings, or that maybe the Mets would deal...no, not the ones you REALLY want...but Steve Matz, who is at least solid and 27 years old...Those are the only two I can think of from the NL that I would touch from anyone that may be giving up on the season.
Then, we may also be able to think of a contender in either league that would want to see if they could get some veteran help from us to put them into the playoffs...I haven't taken that approach yet...but we do have an excess at 3B/2B with Drury, Andujar, Walker...

Inger.. besides the Oakland guys I haven't heard of the other pitchers. I'll have to look them up later.
As far as German... I absolutely love his stuff. I don't love the results but kids especially starters go through growing pains. Look at Sevys 2016 as a starter after a great 2015. He played up in the pen and I'm so glad the Yankees stuck to their guns instead of keeping him in the pen.
I think German should go-to the pen once we get another starter. Let him get comfortable pitching in the majors. Then next year pencil him in the rotation and see if he can hack it. Problem with having so much potential in the minors on the starting rotation front... You only wanna break in one pitcher at a time. And when you're getting inconsistent pitching from the vets on your staff it makes it harder to stay with the rookie and their growing pains.

I think German has some good stuff but still needs some refining. Perhaps this is just what he is as a starter at the MLB level. I think hes adequate in the short-to-mid term so long as the remainder of starters are giving length. If he can be a #5 starter going about 5 innings per start thats fine. I wouldnt want him to be the guy for the rest of the year though (was hoping to get Monty back before long). Trade seems inevitable.
