Sad........both comments so vile........ah well......... Well, one was racist and one was vulgar. There's a difference. No one here ever did help me understand the racist part of what Roseanne said... Nor did anyone agree nor disagree with me on the resemblance of a couple of basketball players, one black and one white to the creature we know as Big Foot... Can someone please help me out? I may not seem to be serious in these discussions, but I truly am...HELP ME, or you're FECKLESS!!!

Anybody ever get the feeling that when the media pushes issues like the whole Rosanne/Bee issues that there's really something else going on that they want to put on the back burner so to speak. And also that they push these issues to further divide the lower and working class?

Well, one was racist and one was vulgar. There's a difference. No one here ever did help me understand the racist part of what Roseanne said... When you say a black person is the product of the Planet of the Apes and the Muslim Brotherhood, that's racist. Is that so hard to understand?

So, the lady she insulted IS black then? She didn't appear to be black in the photos that I saw...and then Roseanne said she was commenting on the shape of her face...
I mean, if you said that of anyone, of any race, that would be insulting. I once knew a fellow, in fact he worked with me, and I was his supervisor who had the nickname "Ape" and seemed to enjoy having the name. His face had an ape-like shape to it to some degree, but not enough that I was thinking "Damn, he does look like an ape" nor that I would have come up with the nickname myself, even fact I always called him David. He was caucasian, by the way. So I don't think the "monkey" or "ape" comments are strictly limited to the black race...which was a point I was making in saying that Bill Walton looks like a Big Foot. He does! A big red-haired one!
Anyway, in some cases, we should just consider the source and not CARE what some people say. That is the only way to make them irrelevant. Canceling her TV show, which punishes all the people that were working with her makes her somewhat of a martyr. If it's a crime punish HER. But it's not, it's just ignorance, or worse prejudice...I think the way things were handled is divisive and that some of the groups that engage in hate will now argue against her firing (actually, I really don't care, it's just a TV show after all)...and yes, they will make her into a martyr...All forms of extremism are dangerous...

I guess I hearken back to a time when there was more civility in public discourse, and I find both insults to be beyond the pale of what "should" be allowed by those who have a platform to speak in a forum regulated by the FCC..........
One comment was a racial insult
One comment was a misogynist insult
Sorry, I can't excuse either one as being "lesser" than the other......but I am done on the matter.....peace...

I hope you're not done, Utah. You raised an interesting point about the FCC. There have been so many pushing so hard and straining the rules from those times you refer to that the FCC has lost considerable bite. Some think that's a good thing, and some think it's a bad thing. Some think it's a good thing, but only when the changes/relaxed rules work in their favor. I agree, neither is the lesser of the two evils. The two people making the insults work for different networks, and those networks have chosen their preferred method of handling the situation they were dealt to handle. The real "judges" are in the court of public opinion. In a just world, the viewing audiences will allow their votes to count by choosing to view or not view the network that made the choice they agreed with or disagreed with. I watch baseball games, and a few other shows. Other than that, I don't really care that much about TV. I prefer to be outside in the yard...or doing a project of some sort, or on the computer with you guys...or working...

All we need to say about the past vs. the present in regard to the FCC is...
1959: Leave it to Beaver
2018: Beavis and Butthead...

All we need to say about the past vs. the present in regard to the FCC is... 1959: Leave it to Beaver 2018: Beavis and Butthead... The rise of cable TV, inger. Don't think they have to follow the same rules as broadcast TV. Remember George Carlin's 7 Dirty Words? They're routinely heard on TV these days.

The coarsening of public discourse over the last 20 years or so has been amazing. But now, with 200 cable TV channels and radio shows all trying to find their niche, it is believed that viewership can only be increased by being more outrageous than the next guy which often just means being more antagonistic, loud and profane while portraying the "other" as somehow inhuman or un-American. Drives clicks and ratings. A little etiquette might go a long way, but, alas, those days appear to be gone. Politeness is now a sign of weakness, I guess. Or worse, a sign of political correctness. I might add that anonymous message boards also lend themselves to coarseness by allowing people to say things on a computer in their home that they would never dare say in person to another human being--unless they wanted to start a fight. This board, thankfully, still seems relatively civilized. Now, let's get back to baseball.

Sigh, yes. Baseball it is. We had a thread about the social comments but somehow it leaked into a thread about TJ for Montgomery. I still wish we could have more free discourse about this, but it seems to rankle a bit too much for us to do it well. Very nice job by renfeld and utah, though...thank you!!!
Signing out on the subject until it rears it's ugly head again, which will hopefully be a head with no social, economic or ethnic identity... (:
Peace on earth to all...
