In other AL East games, The O's made easy meat of the horrific White Sox again, 9-0. Baltimore got 3 in the 1st, but the game can be boiled down to the bottom of the 2nd, when the O's got 4 walks to force in a run, and then 3rd baseman Miguel Vargas collided with another Chicago player trying to field a playable popup behind 3rd, and all three runners came around to score to make it 7-0. Cade Povich had by far the best game of his young career, throwing 7 1/3 innings of 5-hit shutout ball, striking out 10, and improving to 2-7 on the season. Rookie Nick Nastrini was "knocked out" of the game by the collision/dropped popup, giving up 7 runs (4 earned) in 1 2/3 innings, dropping to 0-7.
In Tampa, the Jeffrey Springs gave up just 1 run in 6 innings on a solo HR by, Carlos Santana in the 2nd, but the Rays got 2 in the 4th on RBI singles by Aranda and Driscoll, and Springs and 3 relievers made the 2-1 stand up for the win. Springs got the win, evening his record at 2-2. Rookie Dave Festa gave up the 2 runs in 5 innings, and took the loss, dropping to 2-5 on the year. Current closer Edwin Uceta ran into trouble in the 9th, giving up back to back singles. He then struck out the next two batters, and Cash brought in lefty Garret Cleavinger to face lefty PH Trevor Larnach, whereupon the Twins PH righty Christian Vasquez for Larnach, but it didn't work: Cleavinger got a grounder to short to end the game, earning his 5th save.
At Citifield, Mets lefty David Peterson pitched his 7th outstanding start in a row, and this one was the best of the seven; he held the Red Sox to 1 run on 6 hits and walk in 6 innings, striking out 11. The Mets took the early lead on a 2 run HR by Lindor, and the Sox got their only run of Peterson in the 5th on a single by rookie Nick Sogard to make it 2-1, but the Mets added a run in the 7th, and when the Sox got that one back in the 8th, the Mets put it away with 4 in the 8th on a Lindor RBI double, a sac fly by Nimmo and a two-run HR by Alonso, winning 7-2. Peterson got the win, improving to 9-1 on the season. Kutter Crawford struck out 8 in 6 innings and gave up just 1 hit, the Lindor HR, but that was enough to give a hard luck loss, dropping to 8-13 this year.
At Rogers Centre, Kyle Schwarber led off the game for the Phils with a solo HR, but the Jays knocked out rookie Tyler Phillips after just 2/3 of an inning, scoring 6 including two-run homers by Varsho and Barger. The Phillies kept coming, getting 2 in the 3rd on a RBI grounder and a RBI double by Stott, and one more in the 4th on Schwarber's 2nd HR of the game. The Jays seemed to put it away with 2 in the 6th on a 2-run HR by Guerrero, but the Phils still kept coming, getting back to 8-7 on a bases loaded walk, a RBI grounder and a RBI single by Schwarber. They took the lead in the 9th when Schwarber hit a 3-run shot, his 3rd HR on the night, giving him 6 RBI, and hung on in the bottom when Leo Jimenez hit a solo HR off of Matt Strahm, who then got Clement to pop to first to finish off a great comeback win for the Phils, 10-9. Orion Kierkering pitched a scoreless 8th and got a win for his efforts, making him 4-2 on the season, Chad Green came in in the 9th to try to close it out for Toronto, but gave up Schwarber's 3rd bomb, getting his 2nd blown save and dropping to 4-5. Schwarber was a one-man gang for the Phils, 5 hits, 4 runs scored, 3 HR and 6 RBI. Guerrero went 4-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI to raise his BAVG to .328; he's surged past a slumping Aaron Judge into 2nd in the AL, and may yet chase down Bobby Witt, Jr. for the batting title.
Coming into the games today, the Yanks have fallen into 2nd, 1/2 game behind Baltimore, and are now the top Wild Card again. The Red Sox remained in 3rd, and are now just 1 game over .500 and 10 games back of the Yanks, having gone 17-26 since the All-Star Break. The Rays moved closer to passing the Sox and are now just 1 1/2 back of them, and 11 1/2 back of the Yanks. The Jays blew a chance to gain ground on Boston, and are still 13 1/2 behind the Yanks.
