Stanton gets benched instead of Verdugo, although I do think Judge could use a break from CF.

I didn't notice at first that Volpe is also getting a day off. Yesterday was a rough day for him, he could use a breather.

and yeah probably good for judge to get a day off from CF and w a solid RH pitcher like singer pitching makes sense in terms of matchups.

Stanton gets benched instead of Verdugo, although I do think Judge could use a break from CF. I have a recurring nightmare with a newspaer headline that reads "Yankees sign Lefty Outfielder to $500 M Deal". I read the article: GM Brian Cashman announces the NY Yankees agree to 15 year deal with Alex Verdugo !!! I told my shrink about it. He is worried too.

The Yankees return home to take on the Royals, currently in 2nd in the Central at 79-65. The just got finished sweeping the Twins at home to move past them into 2nd. Their current 4-game win streak came right on the heels of a 7-game losing streak in which they lost their #3 hitter Vinnie Pasquantino for two months to a broken thumb. They lost 3 of 4 to the Yanks in early June, winning the last game when Clay Holmes couldn't hold 1-run lead after getting the first two men in the 9th. It can be argued that the Yanks season turned with that loss, or the next loss against the Red Sox to day after Alex Verdugo's last big game at Fenway.
The Royals have a good offense; they're 3rd in the AL in runs scored, 3rd in BAVG, 6th in slugging and 6th in OPS. They do have some weaknesses; they're next to last in walks, and 9th in HR, but they're 6th in steals and have the fewest batter strikeouts in the league, and lead the AL in BAVG with RISP at .290, in BAVG in Late & Close at .264, and 2nd in High Leverage at .263.
On the pitching side, they're 6th in the AL in ERA, but 13th in K's. Their pitching is top heavy; they have three excellent starters lined up to face the Yanks in Singer, Lugo and Ragans. Lugo and Ragans will both get significant ballots for the Cy Young Award, and fourth good starter in veteran Yankee-killer Michael Wacha. The weak spot is the pen; 12th in the AL in bullpen ERA, last in bullpen K's, 14th in WHIP, and 12th in K/BB ratio. But the Royals' pen is much superior to the Yanks in one important measure: their percentage of stranding inherited runners is 3rd in the AL at 71%, the Yanks are 3rd worst at 64%. They made several additions since the break and has some moderate success, adding Luis Erceg, for example.
Their team defense is a mixed bag; they're 12th in the AL in Defensive Efficiency Rating at .694, right below the Yanks, but they're 3rd in team Defensive Runs Saved at +46 to the Yanks +23. The Yanks have made 19 more errors leading to 20 more unearned runs, and the Royals have turned 94 GIDP, good for 6th in the AL, to the Yanks' 78, 12th in the league. The Royals have one more big advantage on defense: stopping the stolen base game. Yanks have thrown out 30 of 135, 22%, all of which is more or less league average. The Royals have thrown out 27 of 78; the numbers steals allowed is just 51, easily the lowest in the league, and the caught stealing rate is 35%, easily the best.
So the Royals have to advantages in contact hitting, hitting with RISP, fielding, controlling the running game, in the rotation and in stranding inherited runners. The Yanks have the advantage in hitting HR and drawing walks. The Royals have been slightly the better team since the first series in KC, going 38-35, while the Yanks are 33-41. The Royals have a +35 run differential since then, 338-305. The Yanks have been -4 since then, 360-364. The Yanks are at home, but they've played worse at home, so it's hard to see how the Royals don't have a slight edge coming into this series, especially with the starting pitching matchups.
The Yanks have activated Jon Berti from the IL and recalled Jasson Dominguez from Scranton for this series, and the rest of the season. They put D.J. LeMahieu on the IL (hip impingement? good one, Cash!!) and sent Duke Ellis back to Scranton to make room on the roster for the two. Volpe gets a night off; Cabrera starts at short, and Dominguez goes into the lineup playing center and batting 6th, but not for Verdugo. Not yet, anyway. Tonight, Stanton gets a day off and Judge will DH.

The Royals send righty Brady Singer out to face the Yanks in the first game of the series. He pitched in the series in Kansas City in June, so no career recap needed. In 15 starts since then, he's 5-7 with a 3.40 ERA. On the season, he's 9-10 with a 3.35 ERA, 10th in the AL. In 28 starts, he's pitched 158 1/3 innings, he's allowed 153 hits, 62 runs, 59 earned, 15 HR, 43 BB with 150 K's. His WHIP is a slightly better than average 1.238. He's 10th in the AL in pitcher bWAR, and 6th in fewest HR per 9 innings. This is Singer's 6th career start against the Yanks, and the first five have not gone well. He's 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA vs. New York. In 26 innings, he's allowed 28 hits, 16 runs, 15 earned, 3 HR, and 11 BB, while striking out 32. His WHIP against the Yanks is an unhealthy 1.500. The Yankee team quadruple slash line vs. Singer is .275/.353/.412/.765. In the start in June in KC, Singer went 5 2/3 innings, giving up 7 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, 1 BB and 1 HR, striking out 6. the HR was a three-run shot in the 4th by Austin Wells, just his 2nd of the season, and it broke the game open, 6-0, on the way to a 10-1 blowout.
Repertoire: Singer is a 5-pitch righty: slider, sinker, 4-seamer, sweeper and change. He relies heavily on the first almost equally, both over 40% of the time. The slider gets slightly better than average drops, but considerably less break into lefties than average. The sinker gets slightly less drop and tail than average. Same thing for the fastball, slightly less rise and run than average. The sweeper gets average drop and less break away from righties than average. The change gets about average drop and tail. By run values, The sinker is a big plus, the slider a small plus, the 4 season and sweeper are decent-sized minuses, and the change is a fairly big minus. His FB velo is above average, the spin is somewhat above average and his extension is elite, 93rd percentile in MLB, 48th best among 663 pitchers in MLB this season. His chase rate is below average. His average exit velocity is a bit below average, the barrel and hard hit rates are about average. His line drive and ground ball rates are above average, the flyball and popup rates below. His swinging strike rate is slightly below average, the called strike rate is slightly above and so is his CSW. As for luck factors, the BABIP is above average, but so is his strand rate, the HR/FB rate is solidly below average. His ERA run estimators say his ERA should be a half-run higher than its current 3.35, but that could be the Royals excellent defense talking.

Playing the Name Game: We had Brady Singer back in May, so to recap: another boy's name that's gained in popularity in recent decades, there are 7 other Bradys in MLB history. Brady Anderson is the best, the OF for the Orioles and Indians who had one of the great fluke seasons in MLB history; 50 HRs in 1996, making the All-Star team for the 1st of 3 times, and getting down-ballot MVP votes for the 1st of 2 times. The next best was Brady Clark, an OF who played for 9 season in the 2000s, who had back to back decent seasons for the Brewers in 2004 and 2005, accumulating all of 5 bWAR in his career.. There have been 12 players with last name Brady in MLB history. Most of their careers were 1-3 years long, none of them significant. One of them played for the Yanks, pitcher Neal Brady was with the team briefly in 1915 and 1917. There's still only one other player with last name Singer, and it was the reliable lefty staring pitcher Bill Singer, who was 118-127 in his 14 seasons, compiling a career ERA of 3.39 and twice winning 20 games, making the All-Star team both years. He was not very good against the Yanks, going 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 8 starts against them, with more BB (26) than K's (25).

Carlos Rodon starts for the Yanks. He's been a bit up and down for his last 5 starts, and, in fact, for the season as a whole. He pitched a fine game at home against the Rangers, then a bad one in Detroit, then a good one at home vs. the Rockies, then a meltdown in the heat in Washington, and a great start last time in Texas. He's 2-2 with a 3.35 ERA in the five starts, with 35 K's but 11 BB in 26 2/3 innings. On the season, Rodon is 14-9 with a 4.19 ERA. In 28 starts, he's thrown 152 1/3 innings, allowing 137 hits, 73 runs, 71 earned, 26 HR, and 49 BB with 172 K's. His WHIP on the season is slightly better than average 1.221. He's tied for 4th in the AL in wins, and is 7th in the league in K's and 4th in K per 9 innings, but has allowed the 3rd most home runs in the AL this year, and the 2nd most HR per 9 innings. Rodon has started 12 times against the Royals, and has done poorly: 4-6 with a 4.82 ERA. In 61 2/3 innings, he's allowed 75 hits, 35 runs, 33 earned, 7 HR, 20 BB and struck out 58. His WHIP against them is quite bad: 1.541, and their team quadruple slash line against Rodon is: .304/.361/.445/.807. His most recent start against KC came in the series in May at Kaufman Stadium, and it was a beauty: 7 innings, 3 hits, 1 run (earned) 0 HR, 0 BB, but just 3 K's. The Yanks won 4-2.

Yesterday: the Yanks again got great pitching from Gerrit Cole, Cousins and Holmes, but the offense couldn't generate much against the Cubs' Taillon, Pearson and Hodge, and the Yanks missed out on sweeping Chicago, 2-1. The Cubs got their runs on a two runs soft fliner to left center that Judge broke late on with 2 outs and bases loaded in the first, and it dropped for a single by Parades. The Yanks got one back in the 2nd on a sac fly from Volpe, and that was it for the offense. Taillon gave up just the one run on 6 hits with 1 BB and 6 K, improving to 10-8 on the season. Cole's runs were unearned because of a two-out error by Torres; Cole gave up just 3 hits and a BB, while striking out 7, taking the hard-luck loss to drop to 6-4 on the season, but lowering his ERA to 3.57. Hodge gave up a 2-out walk to Rizzo, and pinch-runner Duke Ellis stole 2nd, but that was it, as Hodge struck out Volpe with a slider down and in to nail down his 4th save. The loss dropped the Yanks back to 21 over .500 at 82-61 with 19 games left to play. The loss dropped the Yanks to 21 games over .500, 82-61.
At Camden Yards, Zack Littell and 4 Rays' relievers combined on a 5-hit shutout, blanking the O's 2-0, and taking the series. Johnny DeLuca plated the only runs of the game, breaking up a scoreless tie in the 6th with his 6th HR of the year, a 2-run shot. Littell gave up 3 hits and a BB and struck out 4, raising his record to 6-9 on the year. Corbin Burnes gave up just the HR in 6 innings and took the loss, dropping to 13-8. It was Burnes 2nd straight solid start, but he's got just one win in his last 6. Edwin Uceta got the last four outs, making things exciting in the 9th by giving up a single and a walk, but K'd rookie Coby Mayo, who was pinch-hitting for Nick Maton, to close it out and pick up his 2nd save.
At Fenway, the White Sox got two in the 6th, to take a 2-1 lead on Boston, but the Sox tied it in the bottom of the inning on a solo HR by Wilyer Abreu, his 15th. It stayed that way until the ChiSox exploded for 5 in the 9th off of Zack Kelly on 5 hits and a sac fly, and avoided getting swept, winning 7-2. It was their 2nd win in 4 games, practically a hot streak for Chicago. Reliever Fraser Ellard got the last two outs in the Boston 8th and got the W, making his 2-2 on the season. Kelly took the loss, dropping to 6-3.
In Atlanta, the Braves took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a solo HR by Jared Kelenic, his 15th of the season. The game stayed 1-0 until the Jays got 2 in the 8th, when Spencer Horwitz also hit his 15th to make it 2-1 Toronto. Matt Olson hit a sac fly in the 9th to tie the game at 2, but the Jays scored their ghost runner in the 11th on a single by George Springer. The Braves rallied to win when a bunt single moved their ghost runner to 3rd, then Barger made a throwing error, allowed the tying run score and put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. After an intentional walk, Sean Murphy hit a soft grounder up the middle, Horwitz fielded behind the mound and came home, but not nearly in time for the force, winning it for the Braves, 4-3.
Coming into the games today, the Yanks stayed 1/2 game up on the O's, the Sox stayed 10 behind, the Rays picked up a game and are now 1 game behind Boston and 11 games back of the Yanks. The Jays remained 14 1/2 back of the Yanks. The Red Sox loss reduced the Yanks' magic number for a playoff spot to 10; the O's loss reduced their magic number for the divisional title to 20 with 19 to play.

Doing a Britney Spears impression in the lineup portion of the preview. I've fixed it, thanks. The hell of it is, I used the right name at the top in the series preview and made that oops again in the lineup.
