I've never seen that picture of Chambliss, which I assume is his pennant winning HR against KC. Looks like Nettles, Thurman and Reggie in the backround. Can't tell who that Yankee is in the dugout. Thanks for posting it! Is that Roy White? Not sure, rizzuto, can't really make it out. It might be White, looks like him and he did wear a tight afro in those years.

Don't know if they mentioned it during the game, but Red Sox broadcaster Joe Castiglione announced during today's game that he was retiring after this season after 42 years with Boston. His first season was 1983, the last year of Carl Yastrzemski, the longest tenure of any active broadcaster. He's a good one, an old-school pro. Yeah, they mentioned it. Sad, but inevitable. I hope he enjoys his retirement. I used to hear him when we lived in Boston and he was a straightforward informative broadcaster. No gratuitous anti-Yankee homerism.

OK, Yanks have over 48 hours off; the rest of today and all of tomorrow to fly West, and get ready to play a revived Mariners team for three games in Safeco Field.
The Mariners blew a significant lead over the Astros by losing 33 of 54 from mid-June through the 3rd week in August, but have rebounded back into the Wild Card race by winning 7 of 10. They're back to 3 games over .500 and are 4 1/2 games behind the Astros in the AL West.
The one thing the Mariners can count on most night is excellent starting pitching, and that will be the case the first two games, at least.
Game 1 is 9:40 pm on YES Tuesday evening: Luis Gil (13-6, 3.18 ERA) starts for the Yanks. He's thrown back to back excellent starts since coming off the IL with a back strain, and he'll have to be on his game because his opponent is...Bryan Woo (8-2, 2.38 ERA) whose arm angle and extension makes his very good stuff play way up, making him tough to hit. He faced the Yanks will they were still hot in mid-May and made the lineup look silly, just 2 hits and a BB with 7 K's in 6 shutout innings. He's been brilliant in the 2nd half for the M's, 5-1 in 10 starts, a 2.34 ERA, 53 K's and 5 BB in 61 1/3 innings, just 43 hits.
Game 2 is again at 9:40 pm on Wednesday, but this one is the inevitable Prime Video Game of the Week. Nestor Cortes (9-10, 3.90 ERA) starts for the Yanks. He threw 6 great innings against the Sox, allowing just a solo HR, but taking a no-decision as the Yanks won it in the 10th on Soto's walkoff infield single. Bryce Miller (11-8, 3.12 ERA) starts for Seattle. He's also been great lately; 3-1 in his last 7 starts with a 1.55 ERA, 24 hits, 45 K and 9 BB in 40 1/3 innings.
Game 3 is Thursday afternoon at 4:10 back on YES. Clarke Schmidt (5-3, 2.41 ERA) starts for the Yanks; he's made back-to-back good starts since coming off the IL after being out for 3 months with a lat strain, but has two no-decisions to show for it. The first was because he didn't make it through 5 innings, despite shutting out the Cubs for 4 2/3. The second was because the Yanks rallied late on Judge's slam Friday night. Rookie righty Emerson Hancock (3-4, 4.83) goes for Seattle, he's been up and down but his only truly solid start in his last five was against the White Sox; he's 0-2 with a 4.56 ERA in the 5 games.
Series preview done, I'll check late notifications.

OK, no new notifications since the last time I checked, so I'm going to get going. Enjoy the off-day (more than two full days, really) and I'll see you back here again for the game Tuesday night. Good late afternoon to all. Bye.

Thanks for posting it! If that's the Chambliss 1976 pennant winning HR against KC, that player can't be Reggie Jackson. Reggie's 1st season with the Yankees was 1977.

Carlos May was hitting behind Chambliss in that game but he was removed for a pinch runner, Sandy Alomar, so that's probably Alomar in the picture, on deck at the time. An at bat that never happened! www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA197610140.shtml

Think about First base for him. Same side of the field. Rod Carew did it… we need a 1B… They do need a first baseman too, but that position is supposed to be easier to find. So easy, just move him about 50 feet…

Hope it's not the group that investigated Ohtani for 30 seconds.
