I was surprised how well Berti played first base, plus he had some good AB's and provided a spark. I could see him getting more playing time if Rizzo isn't ready. Berti is a good all around ball player, and he provides speed and a threat on the bases.

up here in the "greens", pouring today and then some winter moves in. have a tee time wednesday - not looking good. might have to break out the skis instead.
I can see that working for putting, but on full shots how can you follow through… can't. too much clothing. actually my limit is 50 degrees, sunny and no wind. i've got one leg over the wrong side of the fence .

the roster has been released. rizzo & stroman are on and rice & ellis are off.
Why is Jazz listed as a utility player, when he's the regular third baseman?

Why is Jazz listed as a utility player, when he's the regular third baseman? Probably because he and Oswaldo can both play in the infield and outfield, if needed.

I don't know about this. Berti/Oswaldo were doing just fine over there. Is rusty injured Rizzo really going to be an upgrade?

Weather wise in Vermont, we've had an amazing early fall, but winter did move in today. Still not ready to put on snow tires.

I hope Rizzo isn't a black hole in the line up.

In game 1 of the ALCS, the Guardians will open with veteran righty Alex Cobb. Cobb has usually pitched well throughout his major league career when healthy; the problem is that he’s been unable to stay healthy in most years of his career. He’s never made 30 starts in a season, and has made more than 25 in just five seasons.
Cobb was drafted in the 4th round of the 2006 June Amateur Draft, almost 20 years ago. He pitched very briefly in rookie ball that year; in 2007, the Rays kept him in instructional for the first half of the season, then sent him to summer class A-ball to make 16 starts, where he pitched well in 80+ innings. Cobb spent all of 2008 in low A, making 25 starts and going 9-7 with a 3.80 ERA. In 2009, the Rays sent promoted him to high-A, making 23 starts and going 8-5 with a 3.03 ERA. In 2010, they elevated Cobb to AA, where, after missing the first month with some sort of injury, he managed to make 23 starts, going 7-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 119+ innings. The season impressed the Rays enough so they put Cobb in the Arizona Fall League, where he pitched very poorly in 7 starts. The Rays started Cobb in AAA, where he made for outstanding starts, so they called him up for a spot start in early May against the Angels. He pitched poorly, with no command, so they sent him back to AAA. He bounced up and down two more times, and pitched very well in his last 4 starts in the majors, but suffered numbness and swelling in his pitching arm in late July and early August, so they shut him down and sent him to get surgery to remove a blood clot and blockage in the area of his right ribs, as well as one of the ribs in front of it. At the start of 2012, he made 8 so-so starts at AAA, and Rays called him up for good in mid-May. Except for multiple injury rehab stints, he’s been in the majors ever since. He went 11-9 in 23 starts with an ERA of 4.03.
In 2013, he got off to an excellent start, going 6-2 with a 3.01 ERA in 13 starts, but got hit in the head with a line drive by Eric Hosmer in mid-June. He didn’t return until mid-August, but pitched very well in 9 starts after he came back, winding up the season at 11-3 with a 2.76 ERA. In 2014, he started off hot again, but was down with an injury for five weeks from mid-April to late-May. He had a great season again, pitching to a 2.87 ERA in 27 starts, but because of low run support, wound up just 10-9. In 2015, the Rays put Cobb on the DL with elbow tendinitis; after further rehab and examination, it was discovered he had torn his UCL and it was time for the inevitable Tommy John surgery. He came back and made 4 rehab starts in A-ball in July and 4 more in AAA in August. They finally Cobb back to the majors for the September stretch drive and he pitched well the first 3 starts, but got destroyed in the last 2, winding up 1-2 with an ERA of 8.59. In 2017, he was healthy pretty much the whole season, making 29 starts, going 12-10 with an ERA of 3.91. At that point, he was eligible for free agency, and the Rays let him leave to sign a 4-year contract with the Orioles.
In 2018, he had to deal with moving from a great pitcher’s park in Tampa to a great hitter’s park in Baltimore, and he also suffered from blister problems, especially in the 2nd half of the season, winding up the season 5-15 with a 4.90 ERA. In 2019, he was put on the DL with a groin injury before the season even started. When he returned he swiftly suffered a serious back injury that ended his season. He made just 3 horrific starts, going 0-2 with an ERA near 11.00. Sometime that summer, he had hip surgery to try to repair the damage. In 2020, he was healthy enough to pitch the entire COVID season, making 10 starts, going 2-5 with a 4.30 ERA. For 2021, Cobb signed with the Angels and suffered more injuries, missing two months from mid-June through mid-August with both blisters and inflammation in his right wrist. He did pitch well in the 18 starts he was able to make, going 8-3 with a 3.76 ERA. In 2022, he signed a three-year deal with the Giants, and though he missed time in April with some minor injuries, was able to get through the bulk of the season. In 28 starts, he went 7-8 with a 3.73 ERA. In 2023, he missed the 2nd half of June with a left oblique strain, but again was otherwise healthy, going 7-7 with a 3.87 ERA. After the season, Cobb had surgery to repair his left hip labrum and impingements in the joint.
He was supposed to start this season on the IL for just 2-3 weeks, but in rehabbing from the hip surgery and getting ready for the season, he came down with “minor shoulder inflammation”. The shoulder problem was supposed to sideline him for another 2-4 weeks, but he couldn’t make it back even for rehab starts in the minors until the end of June. They bounced him from level to level in rehab and he made 6 starts before the trade deadline trying to prove he was healthy enough to be traded. With his contract expiring and the Giants pretty much out of the playoff chase, they traded Cobb to the Guardians for a decent infield prospect name Nate Furman, whose season had already ended in June due to strained right shoulder, after he had hit very well in AAA the first half of the season. Cobb made one rehab start in AAA, then the Guardians called him up to make 2 starts in early August, after which he had to be put back on the IL with fractured fingernail on his pitching had He came off the IL September 1st to make a great start against the Pirates, then was put right back on the IL with blister problems. He had recovered enough to start game 3 of the ALDS against the Tigers, not pitching well, giving up 3 hits, a walk and 2 runs, taking the loss in a 3-1 Detroit win. On the season, Cobb made just 3 starts, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA. In 16 1/3 innings before his start last series, he allowed 14 hits, 7 runs, 5 earned, 1 HR and 3 BB and struck out 10. His WHIP in this limited time was 1.041.
Against the Yanks, Cobb has an excellent career record, but has pitched just once against them in the last 4 seasons. His career record vs. the Bombers: 7-5 in 19 starts with a 3.19 ERA. In 115 2/3 innings, he’s allowed 95 hits, 45 runs, 41 earned, 19 HR, 27 walks and struck out 92. His WHIP against the Yanks is an outstanding 1.055, and their team quadruple slash line against him is .220/.269/.385/.654/, not great, but not awful. His only start against the Yanks since 2020 was a brief, effective start against them last year for the Giants, pitching the 2nd game of the season at the Stadium, going 3 1/3 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, 1 HR, 1 BB and striking out 6, needing 76 pitches to get 10 outs. Cobb left the game with a 3-2 lead, but didn’t make it through 5, getting a no-decision in the Giants’ 7-5 win.
Cobb has never faced the Yanks in the postseason, but he has made three starts in the playoffs. The first two were in 2013, the 3rd one was last week against the Tigers. Cobb won the 2013 Wild Card game against the Indians, going 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing 8 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5. In the 3rd game of the ALDS against the Red Sox, he got a no-decision in game 3, going 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 0 HR, 2 BB, while striking out 5. Cobb didn’t get the W, but the 5-4 Rays win was their only one of the series, which they lost to Boston, 3-1.
