Correct me if I'm wrong, but by Soto rejecting that offer, would that entitle the Yankees to another draft pick? Yes, they'll get a pick but they had to offer it first. The could have made the same offer to Gleyber but passed. As a luxury tax payer the Yankees would get a pick in a sandwich round after the 4th round. Not so exciting but it's something. It's definitely not like it used to be when they got the pick that turned in to Judge (#32 overall) as compensation for losing Swisher. Now the player also has to have been with the team for the full season or else they can't make a QO. I remember when teams used to trade impending FAs near the deadline just for the compensation pick that would be tied to them.

But there needs to be a limit on the amount they can offer, doesn't there? I mean unless there is such a limit in place, every owner can just offer $1 to players whose contracts are up, whenever they don't want to resign them, guaranteeing they'll reject the offer, and in the process picking up a draft pick. The qualifying offer is a set price each year consisting of the mean of the top 125 contracts in MLB. This year it’s $21.05 million. Clubs can’t offer different amounts. They can only offer the one year at the set amount. Thanks, Kay!

I think when this is done either Soto will be truly loved or venomously hated by Yankee fans.

The media is making out like they'll need to mortgage Yankee Stadium if the Yankees want to afford to sign Soto.

The key with the Soto transaction is that the Yankees need to get it done as fast as possible, so they can concentrate on all the other holes to patch up. If they finally sign Soto sometime after the new year, by then all the other big free agent players currently still available, may already be signed.

That would be great but unlikely it happens, his agent has said we are going to take our time and that is how he has done it in the past with big name FAs. Cashman has also said we will meet and talk to him as often as he wants which may mean we are in it to the bitter end. The scenario you describe of losing out on other players is a real possibility and one we have seen in the past.

I don't care much for Cashman but I can't expect him to perform miracles. As in nature, in baseball resources are limited. There are going to be some lesser players on the Yankees if Soto is to be kept.

They'll still need to add some relievers but that should be it.
