Merry Christmas everyone. I recently came over from the YES board, so I thought that I should introduce myself. I've been a Yankee fanatic for my whole life (I'm old). My earliest memories are of the great Yankee teams of the late 1950's and early 1960's. I remember listening to the Yanks under the covers at night (so my parents wouldn't know that I wasn't sleeping) on my transistor radio. The Mick will always be my sports idol. I watched Yogi, Howard, Blanchard, Kubeck, Richardson, Peppitone, Clete, Maris, Mantle, Blanchard, Tresh, etc., etc...., on WPIX and occasionally at the stadium. My loyality never wavered, even through the bad years (yes, there were more than I'd like to remember). Although I usually just "lurked" every day, I have contributed when it seemed necessary. I look forward to becoming part of this community, even if I'm not contributing every day. Oburg Bob I go back to the last couple years of Joe Demaggio! I remember when Mantle messed his knee up in the drainage hole in the outfield! But the strange thing is, I was a Yankee hater! Giant fan even when they left for San Fran! Willie Mays was my Hero! But when he retired and the Yankees hit rock bottom, I climbed aboard! My has the game changed for the worse! Dodgers paying two players a combined value of 1 Billion dollars while San Diago borrows money from a Bank to pay their players! Changing the rules is not going to help! Anyway, welcome aboard!

I think we're coming from pretty close to the same place on the calendar -- guys on the Yanks I remember at the tail-end of their careers include Jerry Coleman, Enos Slaughter, Tommy Byrne, Murray Dickson -- Kubek as a promising young rookie, latter years of McDougald and Moose and Bauer (and Casey) -- yeah Tresh showing so much ability early on -- Billy Short as "The Next Whitey Ford" and Roger Repoz as "The Next Mickey Mantle." I don't know why a Silvertone Six Transistor under the covers with a single plastic earpiece seems so much more pleasurable than being able to watch pretty much every team every night on a reasonably-priced TV package, but it does. All we knew, I guess. Do drop in often. We have our own grizzled veterans coterie around here and we like to resuscitate those thrilling days of yesteryear. Is that Oburg as in Orangeburg SC?

And the antenna is really designed for FM reception. We didn't need any stinking FM back in the early to mid 60s. Actually my transistor radio after the Silvertone was a Motorola. Not the pocket job in the faux-suede case, but a red and silver number about the size of a laptop. Was that your model as well?

We probably received it as a promotional free gift for some reason. Not sure the brand was advertised but Philco rings a bell. It worked great and the antenna was broken, too, before it was passed down to me. It kept me company mowing the grass for six hours every weekend, relaxing in the hammock, and late at night under the covers. That one little white earpiece seemed like high tech growing up in the sticks of south Louisiana.

I see it in the Hi and Lois comic strip, but I'm not sure that is an accurate reflection of contemporary life.

Bought with my own bottle collecting and weed pulling money…probably something like $10? Maybe be $5? I don’t know. Lots of baseball card money…

Love it, though I put the canvas away for winter in a tote I use for a make shift deck box.
