Are you an NC State guy, Renfield? No. Wake Forest. We're currently in the midst of a 10-year (and counting) self-imposed death penalty in basketball, but can't bring myself to root for the blue men. Wow, I didn't know that about the Demon Deacons. You guys have had your share of hoops glory though. Tim Duncan and Muggsy Bogues are two of my all-time favorites. I can remember back to when Bones McKinney was the coach and his star player was a big guy named Lenny Chappell, who later played in the NBA for the Cincinnati Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) along with guys like Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas.

The Good Ole Days. They can happen again if you don't hire two of the worst coaches in ACC history back-to-back and keep them years longer than you should.

Basketball coaches at that level are arguably the most competitive, driven, and myopic human beings on the planet. Factor in the shoe contracts, booster money, gambling, little dribbler programs feeding traveling teams feeding future agents....it just has become seedy and greedy and all-consuming. Results always override intentions and purpose. There are no more John Wooden types at major college programs. What a saint he was. I was lucky enough to sit across from him on two separate occasions, a lunch and a dinner. He spoke to me like I was a colleague, an equal. He treated everyone that way. The most unassuming and humble person, who just happened to be a legend. He could recite hundreds of poems from memory. A true teacher and scholar who lived by the tenets he espoused. Never a word of profanity, even in jest. Yet, he never looked down upon those who did.

Lucky you to have had a chance to interact with John Wooden, who is without question among the finest people ever associated with a major American sports program, professional or collegiate. A man who could command the respect of such towering and strong-willed personalities as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Walton during a time of such social upheaval is for sure a rare specimen. He lived in a modest apartment in Westwood through his time at UCLA and into retirement. One of the few in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. Thanks for your recollection, Rizz. It fits exactly with every other view of him that I have ever heard.

Wooden coached before college basketball went pro. Its unlikely many like him will ever be in the sport again.

I found out that, after spending a very long time learning it, it is unlikely I can run a statistical method called multilevel models because we lack a required software package. What a waste....

That had to be devastating. Don’t jump off the ledge Russ. You still have a purpose in life...

Strange hire by the NYG. Possible the guy turns out to be a superstar but more likely they had limited options once they decided to keep the GM. No great head coach is signing up for that mess above him.

But Gettleman seems like an arrogant guy and not someone an experienced coach would be excited to work for.

No one to root for now that the Saints have once again been eliminated on the final play of a game. Though I love the Bay Area, I have none for the 49ers. Though my late wife was born in Minnesota, there’s little in my heart other than enmity for the Vikings.
The Vikings don’t appear to be playing with the same energy this week. Maybe it was just coming off the bye-week that gave them a better shot against the Saints? The Saints definitely didn’t play well and had many opportunities to win that they squandered.

I don't know who to support anymore either. I'm just glad the Patriots lost already. Maybe I'll support the Ravens. I like Lamar Jackson.
