"It was just shockingly wrong," McMahon, a Minnesota mom of four, told CNN. "Like not even a little bit right." Armed with a passion for constitutional law, along with over a decade of government and law classroom teaching experience, McMahon decided she wanted to combat the mistruths with education. She began posting videos of herself on Instagram, dispelling some of the myths she was seeing online and giving nonpartisan lessons on basic government principles, such as how bills are passed in Congress and how the Electoral College works. "I really just wanted Facebook to sit down and shut up," McMahon said with a laugh. McMahon said she believes it's people's "innate desire to make sense of the world" that makes them latch on to anything, even if it's "straight up lies on Twitter." While she said it's easy to laugh at some of the more preposterous lies that circulate online, the "horrifying" January 6 insurrection proves how conspiracy theories can become a "real threat to national security." The mob of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol that January day included conspiracy theorists linked to QAnon and the Proud Boys -- two right-wing extremist factions that President Donald Trump repeatedly refused to condemn during his election campaign last year. It appears McMahon's simple, straightforward "just the facts" approach to combating such lies is resonating. In January, she said she heard from 10 people who revealed they used to believe some of the QAnon conspiracies until they came to her page. "I understand that I can't reach everybody," she said. "But those 10 people are not going to be out there spreading misinformation anymore." And that, she said, is a win. Growing a following of 'governerds' as 'America's government teacher' When she first began posting her daily government lessons in late October 2020, she had been on Instagram for nine years and had amassed 14,000 followers. In just four months, her account has grown to a community of 400,000, who have started calling themselves "governerds." McMahon said the number of people flocking to her page gives her hope. "There are people who are interested in facts, and who are interested in the truth, even if it's not what they want to hear," McMahon said. That kind of influence, along with McMahon's warm, humorous, and self-deprecating personality, could easily make her a social media influencer. Instead, she likes to call herself "America's government teacher." The kind of government teacher who shares her favorite Amazon sweater finds, tells you about her husband's recent kidney transplant and sometimes gives lessons in her bathrobe while putting on her makeup. Also part of McMahon's appeal is that she never reveals her political leanings, despite people constantly asking her. One follower even offered her $1,000 to tell him who she voted for. And unlike traditional media, she isn't beholden to ratings and she isn't trying to make money. "I swear no allegiance, except fact, reason and human decency," she said. McMahon has given us reason to believe that, despite what the polarizing headlines might say, human decency abounds. Since gaining so many followers, she has galvanized the "governerds" in philanthropic efforts that included a thank you letter writing campaign to the the Capitol cleanup crew, whose job it was to clean up the mess left behind the January 6 riot. The community has also raised more than $700,000 in the last five months -- more than $560,000 of which was raised just last week and will go to pay off more than $56 million in default medical debt through RIPMedicalDebt.org. --02-10-21 BRAVO—HOPE THIS HAPPENS: www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/maddow-blog-in-georgia-scandal-trumps-troubles-are-just-getting-started/ar-BB1dxe4f?li=BBnb7Kz …It came on the heels of a separate call Trump made to Georgia's lead elections investigator in December, directing him to "find" non-existent evidence of fraud.
It wasn't long before some observers questioned whether such efforts were legal. Politico recently published a report noting that Trump's antics "could run afoul of federal and state criminal statutes, according to legal experts and lawmakers." Officials in Atlanta are thinking along similar lines. NBC News reported yesterday: Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's office has opened an investigation into former President Donald Trump's Jan. 2 phone call urging Raffensperger to overturn the state's election results.... Raffensperger's office confirmed that it had opened the inquiry after it received a complaint about Trump's conduct. Once the investigation is complete, Raffensperger's office will report its findings to the state board of elections, which is run by Republicans. Depending on the report's conclusions, it would fall to that panel to decide whether to refer the matter to the state attorney general's office -- which, incidentally, is also run by a Republican -- for possible prosecution. If this sounds familiar, it's not your imagination. The New York Times reported a few weeks ago that prosecutors in Georgia "appear increasingly likely to open a criminal investigation" into the former president's efforts, and the Fulton County district attorney "is already weighing whether to proceed." --02-10-21 BRAVO—ALL COMPANIES SHOULD CUT OFF TIES TO DONALD & TO FOX:www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/all-the-businesses-cutting-ties-with-the-trump-organization/ss-BB1cL7n4?li=BBnb7Kz All the businesses cutting ties with the Trump Organization.

Former President Donald Trump is reported to have been unhappy with his defense team's performance on the opening day of his second impeachment trial, with the lawyers' efforts also coming under scrutiny from several GOP senators.
According to to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity to the Associated Press, Trump felt his team looked weak on television and came off badly in comparison to Democratic prosecutors. Bruce Castor was singled out in the criticism, AP reported.
Even Trump allies such as Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) were among those to question the team's performance.
"I thought I knew where it was going," Graham told reporters on Tuesday.
"And I really didn't know where it was going."
Cruz meanwhile said he did not think the lawyers "did the most effective job."*** MUST READ--02-10-21 IT WAS AWFUL: www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/the-21-most-utterly-bizarre-lines-from-trump-impeachment-lawyer-bruce-castor/ar-BB1dzdNm?li=BBnbfcL The 21 most utterly bizarre lines from Trump impeachment lawyer Bruce Castor.

The effort to draft the resolution that would invoke a provision of the 14th Amendment began quietly in January and gained momentum over the weekend, as Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine gauge whether the measure could attract bipartisan support. --02-09-21 WE NEED TO RAISE THE MIN WAGES = JUST DO THE MATH: us.yahoo.com/finance/news/cbo-15-minimum-wage-hike-would-cost-14-m-jobs-lift-900-k-out-of-poverty-170900012.html CBO: $15 minimum wage hike would cost 1.4M jobs, lift 900K out of poverty. A new Congressional Budget Office report says the Raise the Wage Act – the bill to gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025 – would increase the cumulative deficit by $54 billion over 10 years. Supporters of the minimum wage increase have hoped the report could bolster the case for including the measure in the next COVID-19 relief package. The report analyzed the impact of the legislation if it were enacted at the end of March. The report found the wage hike would cost 1.4 million jobs by 2025. It would also lift 900,000 people out of poverty and increase wages for 17 million people. The CBO said a wage hike would also benefit many of the 10 million people who currently make slightly more than the minimum wage. The CBO says the wage hike would lead to higher prices for goods and services, which would contribute to an increase in federal spending. While spending on nutrition programs would fall, spending for unemployment benefits, health care programs and Social Security would rise due to increased costs. The CBO says Medicaid spending would increase, in part, because so many care workers would receive raises. "We certainly hope they are right, and, since the costs are already accounted for in the cost estimate, we urge state policymakers to hold Medicaid services constant in the face of higher labor costs," said the Economic Policy Institute in a statement. "The care workforce provides extraordinarily valuable services yet is among the most underpaid in the economy, due largely to historical legacies of racial and gender discrimination. The pay increase this workforce would get under a higher federal minimum wage would be among the most valuable outcomes of making this law."
Even a Conservative Analysis Shows the $15 Minimum Wage Does More Good Than Harm.
If this week’s big new report from the Congressional Budget Office is correct, then raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour would involve a straightforward tradeoff. On one side of the ledger, about 1.4 million fewer Americans would be able to find a job, as hiring would become more expensive for businesses. On the other, up to 27 million people would potentially get a raise. Consequently, working-class Americans would take home an extra $333 billion in pay over 10 years, and 900,000 fewer individuals would be in poverty. Some families would end up a bit worse off, but on the whole, America’s low-wage workforce—the grocery store cashiers, nursing home aides, and waiters who’ve been perversely forced to the front lines of the coronavirus crisis while largely being paid a pittance—would be better off. Caldwell's lawyer, Thomas Plofchan, wrote about his work history in a motion filed on Monday, which stated that because Caldwell has "been vetted and found numerous times as a person worthy of the trust and confidence of the United States government," he should be released from jail as he waits for his trial to start.
Authorities have said Caldwell, 66, is a leader of the right-wing Oath Keepers militia group, and helped plan the attack on the Capitol. On Jan. 19, Caldwell was arrested and charged with conspiracy. The British medical journal the Lancet, on Wednesday, published a damning assessment of Donald Trump’s presidency and its impact on Americans’ health, concluding that 40 percent of the nearly 500,000 Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. over the last year were avoidable.
The journal came to the conclusion by comparing the U.S. health outcomes on the coronavirus—the country leads the world in Covid deaths and confirmed cases with more than 27 million—with the weighted average of other G7 nations. So it’s not a wildly abstract conclusion to draw:
The U.S. could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives if it had just performed similarly to its economic peers.
Many of the cases and deaths were avoidable.
Instead of galvanizing the U.S. populace to fight the pandemic, President Trump publicly dismissed its threat (despite privately acknowledging it), discouraged action as infection spread, and eschewed international cooperation.
His refusal to develop a national strategy worsened shortages of personal protective equipment and diagnostic tests. President Trump politicized mask-wearing and school re-openings and convened indoor events attended by thousands, where masks were discouraged and physical distancing was impossible.

Thanks to a lattice of financial secrecy vehicles — all of which are perfectly legal — we may never have a complete financial picture of those who provided the money to organize a rally that descended into chaos and that shook the underpinnings of American democracy. This is just one example of a much bigger problem. The U.S. remains the biggest offshore and financial secrecy haven in the world. Thanks to a wide range of financial tools, from anonymous hedge funds to anonymous trusts to anonymous real estate purchases, there are few jurisdictions easier to hide money in than the U.S. Financial anonymity is as American as apple pie — and illicit finance has raced to the U.S. over the past few decades. Much of that anonymous money has, unsurprisingly, found its way into the American political sector. As another estimate from OpenSecrets found, $750 million from untraceable "dark money" groups barreled into the 2020 election, adding to the staggering totals we've seen in just the past decade. These "dark money" conduits include organizations like the Republican Attorneys General Association, whose Rule of Law Defense Fund helped direct people to the Jan. 6 protest — all without having to disclose its donors. (The group later denied that it helped organize the protest, even though it made robocalls pointing audiences to the rally.) Another nonprofit shielded from disclosing its donors, dubbed Women for America First, helped take the lead in organizing the rally-turned-insurrection — and often "feature[d] members of the president's campaign and family," ABC News reported.

Ringing downtown just a quick bike ride from the state Capitol building are some of Sacramento’s most upscale neighborhoods. There’s Land Park, a leafy community of well-maintained homes that surround 167 acres of urban parkland. And there’s the Fabulous 40s, with its blocks of stately homes on deep lots, including the big blue house from the film “Lady Bird” and the six-bedroom home that the Reagans lived in during the early part of Ronald’s gubernatorial tenure a half-century ago.
The neighborhoods’ exclusivity and desirability owe, in no small part, to their zoning: single-family residential.
That could soon change.
In an unprecedented move, Sacramento is on the verge of approving a plan that would make the city the first in California, and one of the first in the country, to end zoning that permits only one single-family home on a property.
Under the proposal, up to four homes could be built on lots in neighborhoods long defined by their low-density, traffic-free tranquillity.
Sacramento’s effort to dramatically alter its streetscape reflects the capital city’s rapidly broadening identity. Once dominated by state government, Sacramento has seen a huge influx of people and employers in healthcare and technology — including San Francisco Bay Area workers willing to live remotely or make the 90-mile drive to the office in exchange for cheaper living.
The migration has bolstered the city’s arts and cultural scene, but rents have gone up by double digits and rising homelessness has prompted protests over deteriorating conditions for people on the streets.
Backing the zoning proposal is Sacramento’s Democratic mayor, Darrell Steinberg, and a coalition of activists that includes white-collar renters who fear the kind of spiraling housing costs that many left behind in the Bay Area. The group, House Sacramento, is part of a network of organizations across the state called Yes in My Backyard, or YIMBY, that push for similar measures. --02-11-21 BRAVO—MUST STOP THE LIES—MISINFORMATION: www.msn.com/en-us/health/medical/another-big-lie-judge-wolff-says-he-wants-to-stop-virus-misinformation/ar-BB1dAs20?li=BBnb7Kz 'Another big lie...' A Colorado police officer was fired Thursday following investigations into an excessive use of force incident in which he punched a suspect multiple times in the ribs and shocked him five times with a Taser before giving any verbal commands.
Aurora police Officer Robert Rosen responded Aug. 10 to a King Soopers supermarket, where another officer requested assistance in arresting a man on trespassing charges, according to a statement from the department. The man was on the ground on his stomach with his arms underneath him, according to police and body camera video worn by the officer who was trying to initially arrest him.
Rosen arrived to the scene and immediately started punching the man in the ribs before saying anything, the body camera video showed. He then deployed his Taser five times, for a total of 27 seconds within two minutes, according to police.
The suspect suffered minor injuries.
"During the arrest Officer Rosen never attempted any lesser means of force nor did he make any attempts to deescalate the situation in accordance with Aurora Police training," the department said in the statement.
Investigations into the incident found Rosen did not activate his body camera during the arrest and "failed to document his justifications for each use of force that he used during the arrest," police said.
Authorities determined he violated use of force, performance, body worn camera, Taser and lawful orders directives given by the department.
In a letter informing Rosen of his termination, police Chief Vanessa Wilson wrote: "Upon arrival at the scene, you did not attempt to deescalate the situation and did not attempt to use lesser means of force throughout the contact. In fact, you further escalated the situation by quickly going hands on with the subject prior to providing any verbal commands."--02-11-21 IT NEVER ENDS--WOULD RATHER HARASS DRIVERS THEN SOLVING MURDERS: www.texasobserver.org/undetected/?utm_campaign=wp_todays_worldview&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&wpisrc=nl_todayworld …In 2019, four Texas cities—Houston, Arlington, Killeen, and Lubbock—cleared 40 percent or less of reported homicides, according to the latest FBI statistics. These dismal results have provoked an audit in Houston and anger from victims’ relatives, some of whom say detectives never contacted them.
Police in Dallas reported a clearance rate of just 54 percent in 2019. After 40 homicides were reported in May of that year, the highest monthly body count since the 1990s, local advocates requested more detectives and increased oversight. Instead, Governor Greg Abbott dispatched Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, who conducted 12,500 traffic stops in seven weeks—an effort that advocates viewed as unnecessary harassment rather than real help.
The Dallas Police Department, which has 3,000 officers and a $500 million annual budget, initially assigned only one homicide detective in 2018 to reexamine dozens of deaths that might be linked to Chemirmir.
The detective was initially assigned exclusively to the investigation, but later juggled other murder cases.
In 2018, the department’s 16 to 19 homicide detectives handled an average of more than 10 new murder cases each. That’s more than twice the recommended caseload, even without extra time for working older homicide cases.
Police chiefs are constantly balancing the need for officers on the street with the need for detectives to investigate surges in murders, but murders are being shortchanged, advocates say.--02-11-21: www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/militia-members-trained-and-plotted-for-capitol-riot-had-chilling-clear-plan-prosecutors-say/ar-BB1dBPiV?li=BBnb7Kz Militia Members 'Trained and Plotted' for Capitol Riot, Had 'Chilling Clear' Plan, Prosecutors Say
While the Capitol riot shocked Americans who watched it unfold on their televisions, the Oath Keepers, a collection of militias, had been planning for a possible insurrection since the election to make sure members were "fighting fit" by President Joe Biden's inauguration.
Unlike the "vast majority" of those who stormed the Capitol, the Oath Keepers and specifically member Jessica Watkins, "trained and plotted" for the riot, according to court documents. Ahead of the riot, members were encouraged to participate in combat training and when January 6 arrived, they had a plan.
"An unknown male cautioned over the channel for [Watkins] to be safe, and stated, 'Get it, Jess. Do your f****** thing ... Everything we f****** trained for," a court document says occurred after Watkins' group made it into the Capitol rotunda.
When the mob reached the Capitol, a group of people wearing helmets, bullet-proof vests, gloves with knuckle protection and radios marched "tightly together in an organized line" up the steps on the east side. Some of the individuals in the group wore Oath Keeper patches or insignia, court documents say. Video footage from the riot also shows individuals operating in the described formation and wearing the protective gear mentioned in the legal filing.--02-12-21: www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-faces-deeper-fbi-scrutiny-after-details-from-ex-aides/ar-BB1dDlqZ?li=BBnbfcL Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Faces Deeper FBI Scrutiny After Details From Ex-Aides
Last fall, a number of senior staffers accused Texas's highest-ranking attorney of committing crimes to assist Nate Paul, later alleging that the developer or companies owned by him had a hand in work done on Paxton's home.
All of those making accusations quit or were fired; four later sued the attorney general under the state's whistleblower law. The latest details have emerged in an updated court complaint filed Thursday.
The lawsuit accuses Paxton of abusing his position to help Paul and claims the former deputies have information to suggest Paul "was involved in" the remodeling of a house in an affluent area of Austin, owned by Paxton.
It also claims Paul employed the attorney general's alleged mistress as a construction project manager. Paul gave $25,000 to Paxton's 2018 reelection campaign.
At least one Austin contractor has received a subpoena for records—including receipts, invoices and communications—relating to work on Paxton's home, according to Associated Press. The subpoena calls for the contractor to testify before a grand jury.
Paxton's spokesman denied he acted illegally.
"Any accusations that the Attorney General acted contrary to the law are completely false and they will be proven false in court," Ian Prior said in a statement.
According to reports last year, Paxton intervened at least four times on a range of legal matters involving or helpful to Paul.
On one occasion, top agency attorneys allegedly pushed a charity to agree to a greatly reduced settlement in a financial dispute with a company owned by Paul.
The lawyer for the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation said at the time it seemed Paxton's office was representing Paul, while reports called the attorney general's level of involvement "highly unusual and potentially unethical."
Several of Paxton's top staff reported him to law enforcement for alleged abuse of office and bribery in fall 2020. Paxton fired a number of the employees, leading them to file a lawsuit.
"Plaintiffs reasonably believed Paxton's bizarre abuse of his office was the result of bribery," the filing states, labelling Paxton's actions an "obsessive use of the power of his office."
If the former deputies win their case, the state could have to pay out sums in excess of a million dollars in fees, damages and lost pay and benefits.
The attorney general has spent most of his time in office under felony indictment. He faces securities fraud charges relating to his time as a state legislator, for which he was indicted in 2015 but has not yet faced trial. He has pleaded not guilty.--02-11-21: us.yahoo.com/news/m-going-come-kill-president-164923442.html ‘I’m going to come kill the president’: NC man charged with threatening Biden
A Gaston County man with a long history of violence is charged with threatening to kill President Joe Biden. According to newly unsealed documents in the case, David Kyle Reeves, 27, of Gastonia, made a series of angry and erratic phone calls to the White House switchboard between Jan. 28 and Feb. 1 in which he threatened to kill the president and other federal officials. He repeated the threats in phone conversations with the Secret Service in which he dared agents to try and stop him, documents show. “I’m going to come kill the president, I’m going to kill the Secret Service because I own this whole planet,” Reeves said in a phone call to a Secret Service special agent, according to an affidavit.

Conservative columnist Max Boot warned in his latest op-ed for The Washington Post why Fox News personality Tucker Carlson may now pose “the most dangerous threat” to American democracy.
Carlson “seems to be on a mission to make America’s worst problems even worse,” declared Boot.
Boot recalled some of Carlson’s more egregious takes in recent weeks — from his repeated casting of doubt on coronavirus vaccines to his peddling of falsehoods about the police killing of George Floyd.
“That Carlson is spreading dingbat, dishonest conspiracy theories from such a powerful perch is certain to have deleterious, even deadly, consequences for the country,” cautioned Boot.
Boot noted how Carlson, whose prime-time show is watched by millions, just this week attempted to “paint Fox News as a lonely, embattled champion of free speech.”
“No one is trying to punish Fox News for expressing ‘slightly different’ views. I am a staunch believer in free speech,” said Boot.
“But that is not what Carlson represents. He is peddling lunatic conspiracy theories that endanger people’s lives and shred our social fabric,” the pundit concluded. “The executives at Fox News — and at the cable systems that carry it — should be ashamed of themselves for beaming this dangerous claptrap into millions of homes.”--02-13-21: www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-impeachment-defense_n_6026c9bec5b6f88289fb6a2b?ph&ncid=newsltushpmgpolitics Donald Trump’s Deeply Cynical Impeachment Defense The real villains, according to Trump’s legal team, are Democrats, “antifa” and cancel culture.Ex-President Donald Trump’s legal team presented an endless stream of lies, bad faith arguments and out-of-context clips on Friday in an effort to excuse the former president for riling up his supporters to storm the the Capitol, watching silently as they violently overtook the building, and then, when he finally called for peace, still praising the violent mob. Instead, his impeachment defense lawyers showed Democrats using the word “fight” over and over again, falsely claimed “antifa” stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, and presented clips of Black Lives Matter protests to distract from Trump’s long record of encouraging violence. “Unlike the left, President Trump has been entirely consistent in his opposition to mob violence,” Trump attorney Michael van der Veen said. “For Democrats, they have clearly demonstrated that the opposition to mobs and their view of using the National Guard depends upon the mobs’ political views. --02-13-21: www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-rebuffed-plea-from-top-republican-to-call-off-rioters-gop-rep-herrera-beutler-says/ar-BB1dEyv0?li=BBnb7Kz Trump rebuffed plea from top Republican to call off rioters, GOP Rep. Tucker Carlson didn't make any time to talk about Trump's second impeachment trial on his Fox News show Friday night, but he did devote a segment to delivering comically ominous warnings about a cute little video featuring Vice President Kamala Harris that the Disney Channel is running as part of a series for Black History Month in February. Tucker conveniently omitted that bit of context in his attempt to paint the one-minute animated video, with art by the prodigious Black teen artist Tyler Gordon, as some kind of sinister force out to destroy your children's minds. "What we're about to show you is entirely real. It's a spot airing right now on the Disney Channel. If your kids watch, they've probably seen it. It's not billed as a political advertisement. Senators are able to pose questions to counsel at Trump's trial. Some of the former president's Republican allies had made the claim that trying him violates the Constitution because he's no longer in office but this was rejected by a Senate vote and undermined by precedent. "Voting to convict the former president would create a new precedent that a former official can be convicted and disqualified by the Senate," Rubio's question said. It was read by the clerk on the Senate floor. "Therefore, is it not true that under this new precedent a future House facing partisan pressure to 'lock her up' could impeach a former Secretary of State and a future Senate be forced to put her on trial and potentially disqualify from any future office?"

While Donald Trump undergoes a second impeachment trial in Washington, he is also confronting a potent threat to the crown jewel of his real estate holdings, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The threat, involving a highly profitable real estate partnership that generates significant cash for the Trump Organization, is ratcheting up pressure on the former president as his real estate and hospitality operations struggle under hefty debt and vastly reduced revenues, largely a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The partnership owns two first-class commercial buildings — one on Sixth Avenue in New York City and the other in downtown San Francisco — and it is the single most profitable asset in the Trump empire. The Trump Organization owns a 30 percent stake in the buildings, while its partner, Vornado Realty Trust, a huge public real estate concern in New York City, owns 70 percent.
But now Steven Roth, Vornado's powerful founder and chairman, is considering whether to withhold the partnership's cash flows from Trump, said a person familiar with the matter.
Such a move would slash the Trump Organization's cash receipts, and it could force Trump to sell his stake back to Vornado at a discount, leaving him with a smaller gain and eliminating a crucial source of cash. --02-13-21 BRAVO--JUST DO IT: www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/biden-urged-to-replace-usps-board-by-democrats-who-said-postmaster-general-dejoys-polices-are-flawed-and-harmful/ar-BB1dEGfX?li=BBnbfcL Biden urged to replace USPS board by Democrats, who said postmaster general DeJoy's polices are 'flawed and harmful'--02-12-21 HUGE BRAVO—ABOUT TIME: www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/nikki-haley-breaks-with-trump-we-shouldnt-have-followed-him/ar-BB1dD3hv?li=BBnb7Kz Nikki Haley breaks with Trump: 'We shouldn't have followed him. Former president Donald Trump released a lengthy statement Saturday following his acquittal for “incitement of an insurrection” in which he cheered on his defense team, while also taking a verbal jab at Democrats and vowing that his “historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.”
“It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree,” Trump wrote, apparently referring to the Democratic party.
He once again played the victim card – not unlike his previous impeachment trial — saying, “This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country.”
Trump also added something for the MAGA crowd in his closing, giving his followers hope that they haven’t seen the last of him.

5. "People will want to know exactly what the president was doing. They want to know, for example, whether the tweet he sent out calling Vice President Pence a coward while the attack was underway, whether that tweet, for example, was a premeditated effort to provoke violence.
There are a lot of questions that have to be answered and there will be many, many criminal investigations looking at every aspect of this and everyone who was involved, as there should be."
6. "We have never seen that kind of an assault by a president of the United States on another branch of government and that can never happen again."
7. "What we already know does constitute the gravest violation of his oath of office by any president in the history of the country, and this is not something that we can simply look past or pretend didn't happen or try to move on. We've got to make sure this never happens again."

Willis is taking on a former president. And not just that. In an interview about her newly announced criminal investigation into election interference in Georgia, Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, made it clear that the scope of her inquiry would encompass the pressure campaign on state officials by former President Donald Trump as well as the activities of his allies. “An investigation is like an onion,” she said. “You never know. You pull something back, and then you find something else.” She added, “Anything that is relevant to attempts to interfere with the Georgia election will be subject to review.” Willis, whose jurisdiction encompasses much of Atlanta, has suddenly become a new player in the post-presidency of Trump. She will decide whether to bring criminal charges over Trump’s phone call to Georgia’s secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, asking him to “find” votes to erase the former president’s loss there, and other efforts by Trump allies to overturn the election results. The severity of the legal threat to Trump is not yet clear, but Willis has started laying out some details about the inquiry. She and her office have indicated that the investigation will include Sen. Lindsey Graham’s phone call to Raffensperger in November about mail-in ballots; the abrupt removal last month of Byung J. Pak, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, who earned Trump’s enmity for not advancing his debunked assertions about election fraud; and the false claims that Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, made before state legislative committees. She laid out an array of possible criminal charges in letters sent to state officials and agencies asking them to preserve documents, providing a partial map of the potential exposure of Trump and his allies. Trump’s calls to state officials urging them to subvert the election, for instance, could run afoul of a Georgia statute dealing with “criminal solicitation to commit election fraud,” one of the charges outlined in the letters, which if prosecuted as a felony is punishable by at least a year in prison. A North Carolina financier gave $2.5 million to a Houston-based "True the Vote" nonprofit that had vowed to find fraud in the 2020 presidential election. But after weeks of frantically jumping from one unfounded claim to the next, the group's legal efforts dried up, and their lawyers say they don't owe Fred Eshelman a dime.
The namesake founder of Eshelman Ventures LLC, a private health-care investment company, is one of countless conservative donors who piled hundreds of millions of dollars into legal efforts aimed at overturning President Joe Biden's election victory.
Eshelman has filed two lawsuits, one in Texas state court and another in federal court (later withdrawn), that accuse True the Vote of not spending his total donation of $2.5 million for "election integrity" efforts. Instead, Eshelman's attorneys say, True the Vote is one of several nonprofits in which founders allegedly pocketed the money and are still claiming investigations are "ongoing.

Eleven members of Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger's family sent him a vitriolic letter accusing him of being a member of the "devil's army" in light of his criticism of then-President Donald Trump after the January 6 insurrection, The New York Times reported Monday.
"Oh my, what a disappointment you are to us and to God!" they wrote to the Illinois Republican, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the paper, rebuking his "horrible, rude accusations of President Trump."
"It is now most embarrassing to us that we are related to you," they continued in the letter, which was dated January 8, after Kinzinger called for the 25th Amendment to be used to remove Trump from office. And a month after the riot, few of the Republican political figures have been held to account.
At least 57 state and local Republican officials attended the Jan. 6 rally in Washington that turned into a deadly insurrection, according to an updated HuffPost tally. Almost all of them are resisting calls to resign.
They traveled from 27 states for the “Stop the Steal” demonstration near the White House. A couple of officials even gave speeches, warming up the crowd for then-President Donald Trump, who took the stage and regurgitated lies about the election results before instructing the “Make America Great Again” mob to march on the U.S. Capitol.
Late last month, after identifying an initial 21 state and local GOP officials at the rally — among them a QAnon conspiracy theorist, a self-described member of a far-right militia and a man who once declared that “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat” — HuffPost received emails from readers across the country identifying the additional 36 officials in this new tally.
Some of the reader emails were urgent — “PLEASE, PLEASE REVISE YOUR ARTICLE TO REFLECT THESE INSURGENT SEDITIONISTS PLEASE!” read one — underscoring how communities across the country are still grappling with the fallout from the siege of the U.S. Capitol. Many are hoping that these officials will somehow face consequences for their actions.
Nearly all 57 are facing calls to resign. Yet only two men, both of whom were arrested for their role in the riot — a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and a secretary of the California Republican Assembly — have actually stepped down.
Elsewhere, a Virginia state senator was censured and stripped of committee assignments. Two other censure attempts — of a city councilwoman and a school board member in California — were voted down. Don’t call it a comeback. Ex-President Trump never really left the #MAGA building.
Days after his controversial impeachment acquittal, Trump is riding a powerful wave of support within the Republican Party — and his critics are taking a fierce drubbing.
With the trial behind him, the man in Mar-a-Lago is poised to return to the public stage as early as this week.
“I imagine you’ll probably be hearing a lot more from him in the coming days,” senior adviser Jason Miller said.

The Wall Street Journal, owned by Rupert Murdoch, argued Sunday night that although the Senate didn't convict Donald Trump in the trial over his second impeachment, the former president will never recover. The editorial also made it clear that anyone still clinging to Trump may never recover, either.
Trump would have been barred from running again had he been convicted, but the Journal's editorial board doesn't anticipate a problem there: "He may run again, but he won't win another national election," the subheading on the piece read.
The editorial went on to warn Republican officials not to align themselves with a figurehead who is fading from relevance.

THE TEXAS FREEZE WAS NOT A SURPRISE BY ANY MEANS:
They had other Freezes in the last ten plus years but NEVER AS BAD as this one. The energy folks had prepared for the Hot Sizzling Summers BUT NOT for the freezes— most of the sources of energy failed during this freeze AND IT DIDN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY—If they had PREPARED Properly, they would not have lost power to this degree.Already the TEXAS IDIOTS (GOP) are Lying thru their teeth as they pull dirty LIES out of their ASSES and blame this all on Green Energy (A HUGE LIE).Please read the following articles for the TRUTH-FACTS-REALITY:--02-17-21: us.yahoo.com/news/texas-governor-blamed-renewable-energy-150329586.html Texas governor blamed renewable energy for blackouts on Fox News. He told Texans a different story.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is using his state's overwhelming blackouts as a deceptive excuse to attack the Green New Deal.
More than 2.5 million Texas power customers remain in the dark after unprecedented winter storms froze several of the state's power sources.
While some of the state's unweatherized windmills did freeze up, most of the blame lies with natural gas shortages.
That's exactly what Abbott told Dallas-area ABC affiliate WFAA on Tuesday night, describing how natural gas has frozen up and prevented manufacturers from extracting and shipping it to power plants and customers.
But when Abbott appeared on Fox News and faced a national audience, he told a different story. "This shows how the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for America," Abbott told Hannity, particularly noting how solar and wind power got "shut down."
Abbott then noted those sources account for 10 percent of the state's energy, neglecting to mention how the other sources making up a far larger majority failed as well
--02-17-21: us.yahoo.com/news/dont-blame-wind-turbines-texas-171934901.html Don't blame wind turbines for Texas' historic power outages
Officials say the situation in Texas is dire, as some 3 million homes and businesses remain without power following a deadly, record-breaking storm. As some of the coldest temperatures in decades hit the Lone Star State, many have pointed blame at an unusual source: wind turbines.
While the state's power grid can handle its blazingly hot summers, it is not nearly as prepared for severe winter weather — extremes that are only expected to worsen as the climate crisis escalates.
Frozen wind turbines across the state led some conservative politicians to declare that renewable energy is responsible for the catastrophic power failures and rolling blackouts. "This is what happens when you force the grid to rely in part on wind as a power source," Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw tweeted Tuesday. "When weather conditions get bad as they did this week, intermittent renewable energy like wind isn't there when you need it."
"We should never build another wind turbine in Texas," Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller wrote on Facebook. "The experiment failed big time."
Texas Governor Greg Abbott echoed the sentiment and took the opportunity to criticize the Green New Deal.
"This shows how the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for the United States of America," Abbott said to Fox News' Sean Hannity on Tuesday. "Our wind and our solar got shut down, and they were collectively more than 10% of our power grid, and that thrust Texas into a situation where it was lacking power on a statewide basis."
But the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which supplies about 90% of the state with its power, said Tuesday that wind power is responsible for just a fraction of the loss. Of the 45,000 megawatts of power offline during the peak, 30,000 megawatts stemmed from natural gas, while 16,000 megawatts were from wind turbines.
"Of the power shortfall that hit Texas, over 80% was due to problems at coal- and gas-fired plants," PolitiFact reported.
Experts say traditional energy sources, including coal and natural gas, performed below expectations, while wind power actually performed above expectations.
--02-17-21: us.yahoo.com/lifestyle/republicans-lying-causing-texas-blackouts-163143163.html Republicans Are Lying About What’s Causing The Texas Blackouts
Since Monday, millions of Texans have been without power as a winter storm ravaged the state. On Tuesday, around 4 million people were without power, and as of Wednesday, nearly 3 million still lack electricity — all while dealing with the coldest temperatures the state has experienced in months.
Experts say that there are several reasons for the power outages, but naturally, the state’s Republican leaders have found a way to shift blame onto renewable energy and use the statewide crisis to spread lies about proposed climate legislation.
“This shows how the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for the United States of America,” Governor Greg Abbott told Fox News on Tuesday. “Our wind and our solar got shut down and they were collectively more than 10% of our power grid.”
But what made up the other 80 to 90% of the state’s power grid? The answer: fossil fuels. In a Tuesday press conference, representatives from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said that 45,000 megawatts were offline. 15,000 were wind, and 30,000 were gas and coal.
“Texas is a gas state,” Michael Webber, a University of Texas energy resources professor, told the Texas Tribune. “Gas is failing in the most spectacular fashion right now.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw, an avid critic of the Green New Deal, also jumped at the opportunity to blame green energy. “This is what happens when you force the grid to rely in part on wind as a power source. When weather conditions get as bad as they did this week, intermittent renewable energy like wind isn’t there when you need it,” he wrote on Twitter.
Despite these Republicans outright lies, there are several reasons as to why both turbines and gas failed. This week’s extreme weather conditions led to an unprecedented, high demand for energy, and power sources across the state were not built to withstand low temperatures.
As many experts and scientists have pointed out, not only do wind turbines account for a small fraction of the state’s generated energy, but if they’d been properly weatherized — the way they are in Antarctica, and in other parts of the U.S. — they wouldn’t have frozen.--02-17-21: www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/texas-gov-greg-abbott-gets-trashed-for-appearing-on-hannity-in-the-middle-of-blackout-crisis-to-blame-the-green-new-deal/ar-BB1dLBrc?li=BBnbfcL Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Gets Trashed for Appearing on Hannity in the Middle of Blackout Crisis to Blame the Green New Deal
With historic winter storms and freezing temperatures throughout his state causing widespread blackouts, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is under fire for taking time to speak with Sean Hannity, and making false claims about the cause of his state’s power crisis.
Abbott appeared on Hannity’s Fox News program Tuesday night and blamed the blackouts on frozen wind turbines in the Lone Star State.
“This shows how the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for the United States of America,” Abbott told Hannity. “Our wind and our solar got shut down, and they were collectively more than 10 percent of our power grid, and that thrust Texas into a situation where it was lacking power on a statewide basis… As a result, it just shows that fossil fuel is necessary for the state of Texas.”
This claim has been debunked by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which manages most of the state’s power grid. According to the ERCOT (via the Texas Tribune), natural gas providers, unprepared for the extreme cold, are responsible for most of the outages.
The Washington Post reports that thermal power plants primarily reliant on natural gas have been responsible for five to six times as many outages as frozen wind turbines.
But Abbott didn’t let the facts get in the way of a good partisan argument. Green New Deal co-sponsor Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) took exception to Abbott’s comments.
“The real ‘deadly deal’ is his failed leadership,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.--02-17-21: us.yahoo.com/entertainment/texas-power-crisis-proves-more-194117266.html The Texas Power Crisis Proves We Need More, Not Less, Renewable Energy
The pandemic has driven home a lesson that’s been true for a long time about Republican politicians: They don’t actually care about the welfare of their constituents so long as they’re able to trick enough people into people into believing the other side is responsible for everything that’s wrong.
Nearly 500,000 people have died and millions more have had their lives upturned largely because of the GOP’s negligence, but they’ll have you believe the real enemies are the liberals impinging on your freedom by asking you to wear a mask.
A similar routine is playing out in response to the brutal ice storm that swept through Texas earlier this week, leaving millions without power due to an energy grid that was totally unprepared to shoulder the stress of a winterized natural disaster. On Tuesday, Governor Greg Abbott went on Fox News to point the finger at renewable energy. “
This shows how the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for the United States of America,” he said before claiming the “shutdown” of solar and wind energy “thrust Texas into a situation where it was lacking power.”
Abbott isn’t alone. Republicans looking to score political points from across the spectrum have been blaming green energy for the disaster, including those in Texas. “This is what happens when you force the grid to rely in part on wind as a power source,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) tweeted Tuesday afternoon. “When weather conditions get bad as they did this week, intermittent renewable energy like wind isn’t there when you need it.”
Right-wing media has been right there with them. The Wall Street Journal editorial board on Monday published an op-ed titled “A Deep Green Freeze,” and Tucker Carlson echoed the argument Abbott made on Hannity by claiming that Texas is “totally reliant on windmills.”
The fact that wind power only accounts for seven percent of the state’s expected winter energy capacity is beside the point. The bottom line here is that liberals and the Green New Deal are to blame, and what Texas really needs is even more of that sweet, sweet fossil fuel.
But what Abbott, his fellow Republicans, and conservative media conveniently fail to mention is that the Green New Deal is only an idea. The nation, and especially Texas, are powered by fossil fuels, overwhelmingly so, and it’s under this system that Texas was cast into the Dark Ages after a few days of uncharacteristically cold temperatures. The real culprit here is not frozen wind turbines; it’s that huge percentage of Texas’ natural gas-powered thermal plants have frozen and gone offline.
One of the reasons why all of these plants are offline is because the Texas power grid is largely deregulated and privatized. As the Texas Tribune laid out in 2011, the state isolated its power grid from that of the rest of the nation because it didn’t want it to be subject to federal regulation. This led to cost cutting, and over the years the state’s energy infrastructure fell into disrepair.
“The [Electric Reliability Council of Texas] grid has collapsed in exactly the same manner as the old Soviet Union,” Ed Hirs, an energy fellow in the Department of Economics at the University of Houston, told the Houston Chronicle. “It limped along on underinvestment and neglect until it finally broke under predictable circumstances.”
This is all to say that fossil fuels and conservative leadership are very much to blame for the devastation that has swept across the state this week, and if anything the widespread blackouts prove we need to ramp up renewable energy, which is generally more resilient to inclement weather.
Renewable energy doesn’t exacerbate the climate crisis, either, which has helped spur all of these unpredictable weather events, which are only going to get worse. The future of our country hangs in the balance. Republicans either don’t understand this, or they do and they don’t care because — again — they know they’ll be able to spin enough blame onto Democrats to get themselves reelected.
--02-17-21: www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-17/in-texas-s-black-swan-blackout-everything-went-wrong-at-once?srnd=premium In Texas’s Black-Swan Blackout, Everything Went Wrong at Once
As the hours ticked by and millions more were plunged into frozen darkness, a more sober reality emerged. The greatest forced blackout in U.S. history, as this event has almost certainly become, was the result of a systemic and multifaceted failure.
There are no promises of when power will be restored and little likelihood that the episode won’t be repeated in a corner of the country hard hit by climate change.
“This feels like a technical design failure,” said Michael Webber, who founded the Webber Energy Group at the University of Texas at Austin and serves as chief science and technology officer at French utility Engie.
Power plants weren’t fully weatherized, wiping out generation capacity. The ones that were still standing struggled to get enough fuel, with shale wells experiencing so-called freeze-offs. Many wind turbines stopped spinning. Texas, with a grid notoriously isolated from the rest of the U.S., was unable to call on neighboring states for help.--02-17-21: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-02-17/texas-s-power-crisis-shows-what-happens-when-we-ignore-climate-change?srnd=premium Texas Shows What Happens When We Ignore Climate Change
Stop looking for something or someone else to blame for cold, dark days.
Texas, plunged into darkness by vicious winter weather and an inadequate power grid, may have to come up with its own pithy description of what happens to best-laid plans when reality intervenes. On Monday, about 4 million Texans — around 1.4 million in greater Houston alone — had no heat or electricity during an ongoing series of rolling blackouts.
Texas is hardly alone, of course. Severe weather has sideswiped power production in 14 states stretching from the Dakotas to Oklahoma and derailed energy markets in places as far away as Japan and France. The common denominator is climate change, and the jarring extremes in temperature and precipitation that can accompany it.
But Texas offers unique lessons about hubris, management and governance. And its crisis has landed the state in the center of political and private-sector blame-trading that is a hallmark of our era.
No sooner had the lights gone out in Texas than Tucker Carlson, the Fox News commentator, named wind power the villain. “The windmills froze, so the power grid failed,” he opined in a Monday broadcast.
“Rather than celebrate and benefit from their state’s vast natural resources, politicians took the fashionable route and became recklessly reliant on so-called alternative energy — meaning windmills.”
Well, no.
Natural gas, coal and a bit of nuclear energy fuel about 80% of Texas’s power grid. Wind generates a fraction of that amount, particularly during the winter. Even with the weather conspiring against it, wind still appears to have produced significantly more capacity in Texas during the current crisis than anticipated.
In 2011, the last time Texas’s grid suffered a major failure, wind power wasn’t even in use. As my colleague Liam Denning makes clear, the causes of Texas’s power failure are complex, but laying the blame on wind alone is silly.
Stepping away from the mechanics of how Texas generates power and looking at the broader ways in which it manages its grid is also revealing. Some of the state’s woes are due to old-fashioned dilapidation.
Texas’s grid “has collapsed in exactly the same manner as the old Soviet Union,” Ed Hirs, an energy economist at the University of Houston, told the Houston Chronicle. “It limped along on underinvestment and neglect until it finally broke under predictable circumstances.”
--02-17-21: us.yahoo.com/news/rick-perry-suggests-texans-prefer-191900865.html Rick Perry suggests Texans prefer blackouts to federal energy regulation
Rick Perry once wanted to get rid of the U.S. Department of Energy. Now, he's apparently fine with temporarily ridding Texas of energy altogether.
As the former Republican governor of Texas and energy secretary under former President Donald Trump, Perry had a lot to say about the state's ongoing blackouts amid an unprecedented winter storm.
But even as it becomes clear Texas' energy system needs a major overhaul, Perry said Texans would rather remain in the dark if it meant keeping the federal government out, he told House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's (R-Calif.) office in a blog post published Wednesday.
Perry, like other conservatives, blamed Texas' renewable energy sources for the outages, and alleged the Biden administration's focus on decreasing fossil fuel dependence would make this happen again.
Perry did note that natural gas supplies most of Texas' power, not solar and wind, but still claimed Texas would refuse to adopt more of those renewable sources no matter how heavily the federal government subsidizes them.

CNN anchor Brianna Keilar on Tuesday went off on rival network Fox News for peddling an easily debunked lie that a President’s Day rally for former President Donald Trump was “organic” and “spontaneous.” The right-wing cable network has become “it’s own worst nightmare,” she said.
During an event hyped as the “Presidents’ Day ‘Peaceful and Patriotic’ Pro-Trump Rally,” a few hundred MAGA diehards lined a street in West Palm Beach to greet the former president on Monday afternoon after he returned from a golf outing.
Flashing a thumbs up as his motorcade slowly drove past them, the gathering represented Trump’s first public appearance since the Senate acquitted him of inciting an insurrection.
Despite the rally being hyped for a week on far-right media, sycophantic Fox News hosts Pete Hegseth and Sean Hannity both insisted the gathering was not pre-planned in an apparent effort to boost the disgraced ex-president’s ego.
“Fox is becoming its own worst nightmare, completely predictable,” Keilar declared on Tuesday. “Worship Trump, blame Democrats, spotlight fear. Rinse, lather, repeat.”
She sardonically added: “And despite the lies and conspiracy theories being documented and deconstructed on a daily basis, they make like the Brady Bunch kids and keep on, keep on, keep on, keep on all through the night.”
After airing a clip of Hannity insisting “thousands of people” gathered “spontaneously” to cheer on Trump, Keilar explained that there was an organized police presence at the rally and shared a copy of the online invitation sent out by media groups.
“But Sean Hannity is never one to let facts get in the way of things,” the CNN anchor continued, playing another clip of the Fox host and Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. gushing over the “totally organic” event.
“When you go to bed with lies, you wake up with them on the channel too,” Keilar then noted, sharing a clip of Hegseth on Fox & Friends lying that it was “not a planned event.”
The CNN dayside host, who had become increasingly outspoken against Fox during the Trump era, warned her viewers that “these lies are not harmless” as they are “dividing family” and constituting “part of the bigger lie about what is true and what isn’t.”HATE EVENTS/POLICE EVENTS/STUPID-IDIOTIC EVENTS/NUT CASE EVENTS:--02-18-21: www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/how-a-liberal-lawyer-in-georgia-took-an-extreme-right-turn/ar-BB1dMYuI?li=BBnb7Kz How a Liberal Lawyer in Georgia Took an Extreme Right Turn AMERICUS, Ga.— Over the past three decades, as the state around him turned ever more resolutely Republican, W. McCall Calhoun Jr. remained an outspoken and unwavering liberal. He gave money to Democrats, ran for office as a Democrat and zealously championed Democratic policies in social circles that were far from sympathetic. If friends admitted they voted for Donald J. Trump, his reaction could be blistering. “He was hard core, there’s no doubt about it,” said Dr. Michael Busman, a physician who has known Mr. Calhoun for years. “He wouldn’t even want to talk to you if you were Republican.” But last year, as the progressive movement in Georgia was on the cusp of historic electoral triumph, Mr. Calhoun, a small-town lawyer whose family had long roots in the state, suddenly abandoned the Democrats. And not only that, he pledged to kill them.
“I have tons of ammo,” Mr. Calhoun wrote on Twitter three months before storming the U.S. Capitol with a pro-Trump mob. “Gonna use it too — at the range and on racist democrat communists. So make my day.”
The sudden conversion of Mr. Calhoun, who is now in federal custody, was baffling to many who knew him. Indeed, Mr. Calhoun’s story seemed a walking embodiment of Georgia’s contradictions: a state where a rising multiracial coalition of voters sent two Democrats — a Black preacher and a Jewish millennial — to the Senate in January, but where thousands of voters also elected Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, vanguard of an incendiary brand of hard-right politics.
Some Black residents of Americus, Mr. Calhoun’s hometown, were not shocked that a person so worldly could end up doing something like this. “The Jekyll and Hyde effect,” said the Rev. Mathis Kearse Wright Jr., the head of the local N.A.A.C.P. chapter.
He knew Mr. Calhoun, who gave donations and regularly bought tickets to the group’s annual banquet. But Rev. Wright suggested that the racism deep at the root of Georgia’s history was still very much alive, even if white people, including some of those who saw themselves as progressive, did not want to admit it.
“What President Trump did was allow it to bud and to grow,” he said. “A lot of people who had been suppressing it no longer felt that they had to suppress it.”--02-18-21 RIGHT—WE NEED MORE GUNS???: www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/mother-five-shot-killed-after-children-find-gun-her-purse-n1258234 Mother of five shot and killed after children find gun in her purse, police say. Critics compare it to late Soviet Russia. The Texas power grid, entirely contained within the state to avoid federal regulation, is facing renewed scrutiny after buckling under four days of sub-freezing temperatures. "Far too many Texans are without power and heat for their homes," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said Tuesday. "This is unacceptable," and the Texas government and legislature must find ways "ensure that our state never experiences power outages like this again." This isn't the state's first rodeo with widespread blackouts amid unseasonable cold, however. The Texas power grid is designed to independently manage hot summers, not really cold winters. But "what has sent Texas reeling is not an engineering problem," Will Englund reports at The Washington Post. "It is a financial structure for power generation that offers no incentives to power plant operators to prepare for winter. In the name of deregulation and free markets, critics say, Texas has created an electric grid that puts an emphasis on cheap prices over reliable service." --02-18-21: www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/analysis-exodus-of-republican-voters-tired-of-trump-could-push-party-further-right/ar-BB1dNtzs?li=BBnb7Kz Analysis: Exodus of Republican voters tired of Trump could push party further rightWASHINGTON (Reuters) - A surge of Republicans quitting the party to renounce Donald Trump after the deadly Capitol riot could hurt moderates in next year's primaries, adding a capstone to Trump's legacy as president: A potentially lasting rightward push on the party. More than 68,000 Republicans have left the party in recent weeks in Florida, Pennsylvania and North Carolina, crucial states for Democrats' hopes of keeping control of Congress in the mid-term elections in 2022, state voter data shows. That's about three times the roughly 23,000 Democrats who left their party in the same states over the same time period. Compared to the Republicans who stayed put, those who fled were more concentrated in the left-leaning counties around big cities, which political analysts said suggested moderate Republicans could be leading the defections. If the exodus is sustained, it will be to the advantage of candidates in the Republican Party's nomination contests who espouse views that play well with its Trump-supporting base but not with a broader electorate. That could make it harder for Republican candidates to beat Democrats in November, said Morris Fiorina, a political scientist at Stanford University. "If these voters are leaving the party permanently, it's really bad news for Republicans," Fiorina said. Most of the defectors switched to having no party affiliation or joined a minor political party, though many registered as Democrats, according to publicly available voter registration data that is regularly updated by states. U.S. elections are administered by state governments rather than by Washington. The shifts come as Trump is looking to assert his influence as the party's leader after losing to Democrat Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 election. Trump lashed out this week against Mitch McConnell, the most senior elected Republican, after the Senate Minority Leader voted to acquit him on a charge of inciting the Jan. 6 attack but still said he was responsible for his supporters' actions. Republican National Committee spokeswoman Mandi Merritt declined to comment on the flight from the party but said: "Americans of all stripes will know the Republican Party is the party that is fighting for them." THE LAST STRAW Many of the people who left the party did so because of Trump, interviews with more than three dozen people in the three states showed. They also said they were motivated to leave by Republican lawmakers' continued support for Trump even after he spent months before the Capitol attack spreading falsehoods about the election. Several said they were leaving because the party didn't support Trump enough, a sign of the deep divisions that have led to calls by some Republicans for new political parties. Diana Hepner, 76, a retired attorney in Florida's Nassau County near Jacksonville, described herself as a fiscal conservative who was turned off by Trump's rhetoric. "I hung in there with the Republican Party thinking we could get past the elements Trump brought," she said. "Jan. 6 was the straw that broke the camel's back." Hepner, who joined the Democratic Party, hopes she can be a centrist influence on its nomination contests. The roughly 40,000 Floridians who left the Republican Party between mid-December and mid-February were but a sliver of the more than 5 million who remained, according to the state's voter registration data. But even modest defections could make a difference in close nomination contests, particularly in states like Florida and Pennsylvania which restrict voting in nomination contests to members of that party. In Florida's Aug. 18 primary elections last year, two Republican candidates who won their nomination contest by fewer than 1,500 votes went on to win seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. One was Byron Donalds, a vocal Trump supporter who sought retiring Republican representative Francis Rooney's seat on the state's Gulf Coast. Donalds won the primary by just under 800 votes, edging out a nine-candidate field that included other Trump supporters as well as moderates. MODERATES LOSE For the small group of Republican lawmakers who have been critical of Trump, including the 17 House and Senate members who voted to impeach or convict the former president, fewer moderate voters could make fending off primary challengers more difficult, said Michael McDonald, a political scientist at the University of Florida. The exodus appears related to sagging support for Republicans in relatively affluent areas, like the suburban areas that helped deliver Biden's victory in November. Of the nearly 19,000 Pennsylvanians who have left the Republican Party this year through Feb. 16, more than half live in the urban and suburban counties in and around the state's biggest cities, according to state voter registration data. Among the Republicans who remain in the party, about four in 10 live in those same counties. Defections were similarly concentrated around big cities in Florida and in North Carolina, where more than 10,000 Republicans left the party in January, according to voter data. Political analysts said the changes in voter registration were unusual for the months following a presidential election, and that it remained to be seen whether the exodus will continue or reverse itself. Some might still return to the fold, they said. "I don't want to say I'm done with the Republican Party," said Robert Abelman, a finance company executive living just outside Philadelphia in Lafayette Hill, who said he voted for Biden. Citing his "disgust" with Trump's hold over the party, Abelman, 56, cut his Republican ties this month when he filled out a form indicating he now has no party affiliation. He said he was interested in new party options, such as a center-right breakaway party that dozens of former Republican officials have discussed forming.

But he, evidently, has not had any time for the mayor of his biggest city. Appearing on MSNBC with Stephanie Ruhle Friday, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) painted a dire picture of how a massive winter storm has impacted his city. As many as 1.4 million of Turner’s constituents were without power at one point this week — although that number is now down to approximately 10,000. Further, Turner has issued a boil water notice for Houston through the weekend, and the mayor says he’s concerned about pipes bursting. Through all this, Turner says that Abbott hasn’t bothered to reach out. “I have not talked to the governor at any time during this crisis,” Turner said. Ruhle was incredulous. “You’re the mayor of Houston,” Ruhle said. “The governor of your state hasn’t reached out to you since this began?!” Turner confirmed Abbott’s radio silence. “I have not talked to the governor,” Turner said. “But we’re pushing forward.” Abbott was heavily criticized for appearing on Hannity Tuesday night, at the height of the crisis, to rant about the Green New Deal. During that Fox News hit, the Texas governor falsely blamed frozen wind turbines for being the primary cause of his state’s energy crisis. --02-19-21 BRAVO FOR SPEAKING OUT ABOUT CRUZ: www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/jimmy-kimmel-torches-snake-on-a-plane-ted-cruz-for-flying-to-cancun-amid-power-crisis-in-texas-the-planets-biggest-hypocrite/ar-BB1dPJ0F?li=BBnbfcL Jimmy Kimmel Torches ‘Snake on a Plane’ Ted Cruz for Flying to Cancun Amid Power Crisis in Texas: ‘The Planet’s Biggest Hypocrite’ Jimmy Kimmel spent the bulk of his Thursday night monologue going after Sen. Kimmel went on to illustrate just how devastating the climate disaster in Texas has been, as roads have been shutdown, people have had to burn their belongings to stay warm, and even toilet water is becoming solid.
“And where was Mr. Texas while his constituents are suffering?” Kimmel asked. “Well, there he is, snake on a plane right there! Headed, ironically, to the very place he tried to build a wall around.”--02-19-21: us.yahoo.com/news/texas-in-turmoil-and-no-one-is-taking-accountability-we-are-in-the-middle-of-a-humanitarian-crisis-001836836.html Texas in turmoil and no one is taking responsibility: 'We are in the middle of a humanitarian crisis'
For each of the past three nights, William Martinez, his wife, his two young children and his in-laws have been almost completely without power in freezing San Antonio.
Martinez and his family have relied on blankets and a fireplace for warmth. None of them have been able to take a shower in more than 72 hours because all of the water pipes in the home are frozen. And the only power that the family does get comes in hour-long waves no more than twice a day.
“Texas is lacking so much and it breaks your heart,” Martinez, 42, told Yahoo News Wednesday afternoon. “I have never imagined that something like this would happen here.”
Martinez and his family are a stark example of the more than 3 million Texans still without power. Some have gone four days without electricity after a rare winter storm slammed the state and created bitterly cold and borderline-unlivable conditions.
And while many Texans are fearful for what the near future looks like, some elected officials appear to care less.
Twitter blew up Thursday morning with accusations that Republican Sen. Ted Cuz and his family flew to Cancun to stay at a resort, and Associated Press later confirmed the news. Spokespersons for Cruz’s office did not immediately respond to Yahoo News' request for comment Thursday.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Texans don't know when they will get their lights back on or access to running water.
Additionally, on social media, viral videos show apartment complex pools frozen over, water rushing into homes from burst pipes, long lines for grocery stores and cars idling in the streets, unable to get to their destinations.
At least 31 people have died as of Wednesday afternoon as a result of the severe weather. And that number is expected to climb with no end to the Texas nightmare in sight.

Texas’ power grid was “seconds and minutes” away from a catastrophic failure that could have left Texans in the dark for months, officials with the entity that operates the grid said Thursday. As millions of customers throughout the state begin to have power restored after days of massive blackouts, officials with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, which operates the power grid that covers most of the state, said Texas was dangerously close to a worst-case scenario: uncontrolled blackouts across the state. The quick decision that grid operators made in the early hours of Monday morning to begin what was intended to be rolling blackouts — but lasted days for millions of Texans — occurred because operators were seeing warning signs that massive amounts of energy supply was dropping off the grid. As natural gas fired plants, utility scale wind power and coal plants tripped offline due to the extreme cold brought by the winter storm, the amount of power supplied to the grid to be distributed across the state fell rapidly. At the same time, demand was increasing as consumers and businesses turned up the heat and stayed inside to avoid the weather. “It needed to be addressed immediately,” said Bill Magness, president of ERCOT. “It was seconds and minutes [from possible failure] given the amount of generation that was coming off the system.” Grid operators had to act quickly to cut the amount of power distributed, Magness said, because if they had waited, “then what happens in that next minute might be that three more [power generation] units come offline, and then you’re sunk.” ***--02-19-21 CRITICAL MUST READ: edition.cnn.com/2021/02/18/opinions/texas-winter-disaster-ghitis/index.html Texas disaster casts harsh light on America's future
No one expects the United States to control the weather and it can't prevent animal viruses in other countries from jumping into humans. But the way it has "handled" recent disasters, from the pandemic to the current weather crisis in Texas, shows that it can offer a master class in how to make a mighty nation look a lot like a failing state.
Let's be clear: the US is not a failed state. But we have seen too many catastrophic, avoidable failures to call them flukes. The current winter calamity in Texas and the grotesque mishandling of the pandemic, to name just the most recent partly-self-inflicted debacles, are filled with critical lessons.
If the human suffering were not incentive enough to demand a course correction, the fact that the entire world is watching ought to be. America's reputation is suffering along with the millions of Texans braving the extreme cold without electricity or running water.
A nation starts losing ground when its leaders, instead of focusing on what's best for their country, become more concerned with their personal interests. Disasters become catastrophes when partisanship overtakes patriotism; when ideological obedience turns policy into fanaticism; when political loyalty outranks competence in government staffing and when extracting political advantage becomes the overpowering goal of people who took office claiming they wanted to work for the people.
Why are Texans freezing? There are many reasons, but this would not be happening if the state --- dominated by Republicans committed to a small government ideology -- had not severed its links to the national electrical grid for the sake of avoiding regulation. That regulation, among other things, would have required utilities to be better prepared.
But Texas, the country's top energy producer, was not only caught unprepared for a harsh cold snap, but by choice, is the only state in the contiguous US essentially unable to borrow energy from other states.--02-19-21; UNBELIEVABLE: us.yahoo.com/news/5-152-power-bill-texas-192316981.html ‘People Are Greedy’: The Absurd Electric Bills Slamming Texans
DALLAS—As a historic winter storm raged across Texas over the weekend, Akilah Scott-Amos received an alarming message from her power company: Please switch services because “prices are about to explode.”
The 43-year-old owner of an organic skincare and apothecary shop was initially confused by the message from Griddy, which sells wholesale power for a monthly membership, but she began to look for other providers.
Then she checked her bill.
“I paid $450 for one day. I was in shock,” Scott-Amos told The Daily Beast on Wednesday.
“It made no sense because we have a gas heater, a gas fireplace, and we have been keeping the temperature around the house at 65 degrees. With that amount of money, and the labeled amount of usage Griddy said was used—we would have to be lighting up the whole neighborhood.”
The nightmare only got worse on Monday, when she realized her bill had increased by another $2,500. In comparison, Scott-Amos paid $33.93 last year for the entire month of February.
“I don’t have that type of money,” she said. “I now owe Griddy $2,869.11. This is going to put me in debt, this is going to mess up my credit. Are they going to cut me off? In the middle of this ongoing crisis?”
‘What if I Die Here?’: The Panic of COVID Patients in Texas Left With No Heat
Scott-Amos is not alone. Dozens of Griddy customers have blasted the wholesale power company for their outrageously high bills amid a winter disaster.
Despite the astronomical prices, Scott-Amos is considered one of the lucky ones, as millions of people across Texas are still without power while temperatures remain perilously low.
The storm, which bulldozed through parts of the central and southern United States this week, has killed at least 30 people and hospitalized dozens more who have resorted to dangerous measures to stay warm.
“This is a double-edged sword,” Scott-Amos said. “Thankfully we have power, but at what price? We are using it minimally and getting charged thousands. Most people I know don’t even have power, and I’m getting these outrageous bills.”--02-19-21: slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/02/texas-public-officials-unprepared.html A lot has been made clear during the course of the coronavirus pandemic. But one of the most consequential revelations has to be that public officials in the United States are ill-prepared to respond to any type of major event that is detrimental to human life.
And within that lack of preparation lies a habit of indifference toward their constituents and a desire to blame anyone other than themselves.
Take Texas, where a historic winter storm has caused extended power outages for millions of people. It’s difficult to pinpoint a single villain in this failure, explained Julie A. Cohn, an energy historian, in an op-ed for the Washington Post.
The nation’s power grids are a complex weaving of thousands of smaller companies with no single source of oversight. In Texas, the grid that failed does not have a uniquely flawed infrastructure, but it is intentionally restricted to stay within the state’s lines. Winter storms of this magnitude don’t typically hit Texas, although when they do, they tend to wreak havoc.
The state also doesn’t provide incentives to companies that would encourage them to winterize. DeLuna, who was not able to speak to TODAY Food, noted in the caption that other restaurants and pizzerias were closed, and while the establishment was only open for a brief amount of time, they served far more food than they usually would. "We were open for four hours," DeLuna wrote. " … And what (was) a weekend worth of food to serve gone within that time." From the look of the problems Texas is having, the infrastructure that is missing or in disrepair has been such since before Cruz was born... My niece has been without heat and power the entire week. Luckily, she was able to move in with my sister who fortunately has not been without power. None of them “deserve” to be in this situation, irrespective of their political affiliation (neither are Republican supporters by the way). Ted Cruz, however, may just deserve all the vitriol he’s getting because of his statements years prior when California had similar problems with rolling blackouts (for different reasons). Cruz is certainly staunchly in favor of deregulation, as his voting record proves, which has allowed Texas’ power grid to go without safeguards for exactly this type of eventuality. Moreover, there is a reason Cruz cut short his trip to Cancun and sheepishly returned to Texas. It was a terrible decision and a lapse in leadership. Cruz is not just one of “plenty of Texans” with means: he is a representative of all Texans, including those without means who need power brokers to pull as many strings as they can to aid as many people as they can in a time of real crisis. Being on a plane to a Mexican resort because you can (escape a crisis) simply illustrates the disconnect from the oath taken as a United States senator.
