After Covid-19 took the lives of half a million victims in the US, the nation's top infectious disease expert said the mass tragedy was avoidable.

"It does ... pain me when I see things like pleading for people to do the kinds of things that you know work -- the mask wearing, the physical separation -- and the denial," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

It was "actually painful for me" to see hospitals overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients, he said, and "in those same regions, there were people who were denying that this was going on, saying, 'Oh, it's fake news, it's a hoax.'

I mean, how could you possibly say that when people in your own state, your own city, your own county, are dying?"

"Here we are today, looking at 500,000 Americans who've died thus far," Fauci said.

"That's the proof of what actually has been going on. You can't deny that."

The US Covid-19 death toll is by far the highest of any country -- and more than double that of Brazil's, which according to Johns Hopkins University data has the next highest number of virus-related fatalities.

The ocean may have less time than we thought before massive, irreversible shifts take place. A new study finds that a crucial ocean system may reach its “tipping point” sooner than predicted if the rate of climate change continues at a breakneck pace.

When we talk about climate change, the concept of tipping points is basically adding fuel to the already nightmare fire.

Scientists now agree that climate changes could drive crucial systems on our planet to change so much that they reach a tipping point where recovery is impossible and change is inevitable.

One of the most pressing worries scientists have when it comes to tipping points lies underwater. Specifically, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, known as the AMOC, which helps shepherd warmer water to the North Atlantic.

Among other things, it helps ensure Europe has relatively mild winters given its high latitude. Messing with it could be one of the fastest ways to make not just the region’s but the world’s weather run amok.

In the new study published Monday in the Proceedings of the Natural Academy of Sciences, scientists considered not just the amount of change to the oceans that could precede a tipping point, but also the rate of change.

Think of it as the difference between pouring a cup of hot water very slowly into a bucket of cold water versus dumping it in all at once. While the same amount of water is being added both times, the rate at which water is being added is quite different.

…It's not that they haven't been doing that all along, of course. That's conservative electoral strategy 101, about which I've written many times. Having lost the popular vote seven out of the last eight presidential elections, they know very well that they do not have the support of a majority of voters in the country.

Now that Trump conveniently persuaded GOP voters that the presidential election was stolen from them in broad daylight, the opportunity to curb voting in some new and ingenious ways has presented itself and they are going for it.

So far this year at least 165 bills that would restrict voting access are being considered in state legislatures nationwide reports the Brennan Center for Justice. And the excuse Republicans are using is that they must do this to "restore trust" in the voting system — trust that was destroyed by the outrageous lies of Donald Trump and his henchmen. What a neat trick.

Apparently, the only way they can restore trust is to "fix" problems that don't exist but which also happen to suppress Democratic votes. Take Georgia, for instance, ground zero for Trump's post-election machinations.

According to the Brennan Center, the Republican legislature has proposed curtailing early voting — including on Sundays when historically Black churches have caravaned congregations in what is called "souls to the polls" — making drop boxes more onerous to access and requiring several new steps in order to vote by mail.

One of the most counterintuitive restrictions is a new process that disallows dropping ballots off on Election Day and three days prior. It makes no sense. If you've forgotten to get your ballot in the mail you should be able to walk it in. What can possibly be a reasonable rationale against that?

Because of the timing of the hunt, pregnant wolves will likely be killed.

Shortly before Joe Biden was inaugurated, Sam’s mother began stocking up on food in a panic. He didn’t know why, but he knew it probably had something to do with QAnon.

The 19-year-old started to notice changes in his mother’s behavior around the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. She had always been a nervous woman: She stopped flying after 9/11 and had hovered closely to Sam and his two younger siblings for their entire lives.

But during the COVID-19 crisis, his mom’s paranoia spiraled from quirky to deranged. It has turned her into someone he hardly recognizes.

Though she didn’t used to be very political, she now fears the president is a pedophile who stole the election. She’s scared of radiation from the 5G towers in her neighborhood and, as a white woman, she told her son, she’s afraid of being harmed by Black Lives Matter protesters — a movement she once supported.

She worries that Sam’s brother and sister are being “indoctrinated” at their public high school and wants to move them to a Catholic one. She’s also refusing to get them immunized against COVID-19 as false rumors swirl that the vaccine contains a secret location-tracking microchip. (She was initially terrified of the virus but now considers the lockdowns an affront to her freedoms.)

“She wasn’t always like this,” Sam said. “It just keeps getting worse.”

Sam moved back into his mom’s Michigan home last March when his college campus shut down. His dad, who’d been divorced from his mother for many years, had recently died, and it was nice to be back around family. But Sam quickly noticed his mom was spending almost all of her time online.

For hours into the night she’d be on Facebook and, later, Parler, obsessing over articles from obscure, ultraconservative websites that traffic in fake news. She’d send posts to Sam pushing political claims that were risibly false, and they’d get into furious arguments over dinner as he tried to debunk them.

Arizona Congressman Paul Gosar is continuing to neither confirm nor deny claims that he met with members of the far-right group Oath Keepers and told them the country is in a civil war but people "haven't started shooting" yet.

Gosar is already under fire over his alleged ties to the extremist group in the wake of the January attack on the Capitol, which members of the Oath Keepers were a part of.

The Oath Keepers are an armed and fiercely anti-government militia group who are reported to have tens of thousands of members, mainly consisting of current and former law enforcement and military personnel.

The New York Times first revealed in January that Jim Arroyo, a leading member of the Yavapai County chapter of the Oath Keepers, posted a video on YouTube on November 22, 2020, claiming Gosar came to one of their meetings and supported the group's calls for a war in the country.

"We did a meeting a couple of years ago where our elected representative from Washington, Paul Gosar, came out and we asked him flat out at that time, 'Do you think we're heading into a civil war?'" Arroyo said.

"And his response was just flat out, 'We're in it. We just haven't started shooting at each other yet.'"

A cousin of Ray Wood, a former undercover police officer, shared a confession letter in which Wood said that the agencies facilitated the assassination.

A letter shared by the family of a deceased former New York police officer alleges that the officer, the New York City Police Department and the FBI played a role in the murder of the powerful civil rights leader Malcolm X.

The outspoken antiracism activist and former spokesman for the Nation of Islam died on February 21, 1965, after being shot while delivering remarks at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City.

Ray Wood, a former undercover police officer, wrote in a newly released confession letter that the NYPD and FBI worked with him to make sure the two men in charge of Malcolm X’s security detail were arrested in the days before the speech.

Ray Wood first shared his confession with family when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2011. At the time, he asked his cousin, Reggie, not to share the letter until after he died.

Ray Wood died in November, and Reggie Wood shared his cousin’s confession publicly on Saturday, flanked by a group that included Malcolm X’s daughters, Qubiliah Shabazz, Ilyasah Shabazz and Gamilah Shabazz, and civil rights attorneys Benjamin Crump, Ray Hamlin and Paul Napoli.

“For 10 years, I have carried this confession secretly in fear of what could happen to my family and myself if the government found out what I knew,” Reggie Wood said Saturday.

Ray Wood confessed that he, the NYPD and the U.S. government all made sure Malcolm X wasn’t adequately protected from assassination during his final speech. “I participated in actions that in hindsight were deplorable and detrimental to the advancement of my own, Black people,” Wood said.

According to his letter, in 1965, Wood’s NYPD supervisors instructed him to devise a plot to bomb the Statue of Liberty along with two key members of the Malcolm X’s security detail, Khaleel Sayyed and Walter Bowe, in order to ensure the two security guards were arrested and separated from Malcolm X during his Feb. 21 speech.

He allegedly used zip ties and tape to tie up a 32-year-old male and a 21-year-old female, and covered their heads with pillowcases.

The defendant had become increasingly frustrated by the moratorium on evictions put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said. The current restriction runs until May.

Totally agree. I saw the video out here on the news. I saw a slender young man walking along the road. He was dressed all in either black or another very dark color, carrying a white grocery bag in his left hand.

Home video of him gave the impression of a happy, gentle, boyish young man.

To give a complete account and to try to reason why those policemen stopped him, I did notice that he was wearing a dark-colored mask. Since this was in October, it must have been to ward off the cool evening air that we experience in Colorado, because this was before COVID. I did see steam coming up from where the passing cars hit puddles on the street.

No matter what, the body cam on the cops was not very effective because it was bouncing around from one guy to the other, but one could make out that there was nothing that the young man that appeared to escalate the situation. My heart goes out to the family and follows this death...

A State Department official for several years has been publicly calling for the establishment of Christian nation-states, warning that white people face “elimination” and railing against Jews as well as Black Lives Matter and other social movements.

Fritz Berggren, a mid-ranking Foreign Service officer, openly uses his name and image as he espouses these and other controversial views, according to a review of his online postings. Current and former State Department officials noted the connection to POLITICO in recent days.

“Jesus Christ came to save the whole world from the Jews — the founders of the original Anti-Christ religion, they who are the seed of the Serpent, that brood of vipers,” states an Oct. 4 blog post signed “Fritz Berggren, PhD” and titled “Jews are Not God’s Chosen People. Judeo-Christian is Anti-Christ.”

“They murdered Jesus Christ,” the 5,300-word post continues, “How then can they be God’s chosen?”

Berggren’s voluminous output dates back to at least September 2017, according to the archives of his website, Bloodandfaith.com. An about page for the site, also signed “Fritz Berggren, PhD,” offers what appears to be a manifesto of sorts. Like several of his other posts, it includes a video of Berggren expanding on his views.

“The goal of the Left is to destroy blood and faith so that (Marxist) religion alone becomes master and enslaver of all,” Berggren writes. “Europeans must reclaim their blood and faith, just as Blacks are proud and hispanics have very strong blood identity organizations.”

Two days after the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, another post signed by Berggren declared: “Notes on the events of January 6. The illusion of a participatory democracy has been burst. You already live in a cult/theocracy — I offer you Christian liberty in a Christian nation.”

Capitol Police chief warns militia groups want to 'blow up the Capitol' when Biden addresses Congress.

(CNN)Acting US Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman warned Thursday that militia groups involved in the January 6 insurrection want to "blow up the Capitol" and "kill as many members as possible" when President Joe Biden addresses Congress.

Pressed by House lawmakers to provide a timeline for removing the razorwire fencing and other enhanced security measures installed after the US Capitol attack, Pittman said law enforcement remains concerned about threats by known militia groups "with a direct nexus to the State of the Union" address.

"We know that members of the militia groups that were present on January 6 have stated their desires that they want to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members as possible with a direct nexus to the State of the Union, which we know that date has not been identified," she told House lawmakers during Thursday's hearing on security failures related to January 6.

"We know that the insurrectionists that attacked the Capitol weren't only interested in attacking members of Congress and officers," she added. "They wanted to send a symbolic message to the nation as to who is in charge of that legislative process."

While presidents typically do not deliver an official State of the Union address in the opening months of their first term, Biden's administration is considering an address to a joint session of Congress later this year, though a specific date hasn't been identified

Deputies say gangs exist within Los Angeles Sheriff's Department

A CBS News investigation has uncovered allegations of gangs existing within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, possibly for decades. Current deputies out of the East Los Angeles station say the existence of gangs within law enforcement has been a problem in the area.

The deputies, who do not want to be identified for fear of reprisal, claim the most prevalent are called the Banditos — comprised of mostly Latino deputies who serve predominantly African American and Latino neighborhoods.

"They operate as a gang. They commit crimes, they assault people," one deputy told CBS News' Maria Elena Salinas.

The deputy said the gang is based out of East L.A., and that members who have become Banditos there have been promoted and "they've spread all over the county."

Members of the gang identify themselves with a tattoo, another deputy claimed.

They said the "initiation" process could involve "getting a shooting," adding that potential members would "do anything for these guys."

"If you get in a shooting that's a definite brownie point," the deputy said.

A Pentagon report on extremism obtained by CNN gives disturbing insight into how White supremacists are active in the military and offers recommendations to better identify domestic extremists and prevent them from serving.

It details an instance of a former National Guardsman who is a member of a dangerous neo-Nazi group bragging about openly discussing extremist views while serving and separately describes service members describing how they recognize fellow White supremacists by their fascist tattoos and T-shirt logos.

While the report, commissioned by Congress and dated October 2020, concluded that extremist views were not widespread and identified "a low number of cases in absolute terms," it underlines the urgency of the problem because "individuals with extremist affiliations and military experience are a concern to U.S. national security because of their proven ability to execute high-impact events."

Cohen said Black Americans are the ones that are suffering, but “we are the guys that are tacitly allowing it to continue. And we have to stand up and say, no, we're not going to do that anymore.”

His co-founder Jerry Greenfield echoed the sentiment: “This is not just a Black problem... for things to get any better, white people need to be out front.”

Greenfield acknowledged that it is not always comfortable, it is not always easy, but white people have to "do the right thing."

In fighting against police brutality, the ice cream company co-founders have focused on ending a policy known as “qualified immunity.” And note that ending the policy would not be an “anti-police” move, instead it is a "anti-bad police" policy.

"The only people it will hurt are bad cops,” said Greenfield.

Qualified immunity, according to the Cornell Legal Information Institute, “protects a government official from lawsuits alleging that the official violated a plaintiff‘s rights, only allowing suits where officials violated a ‘clearly established’ statutory or constitutional right.”

An Asian man is in critical condition after getting stabbed by a butcher knife in New York's Chinatown on Thursday evening. Cruz, a likely 2024 presidential candidate, complained in his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference that when he goes into restaurants he has to wear a mask, but can then take it off when he is seated at a table.

"Now they're saying, everybody can get immunized, we can have herd immunity everywhere, and we're going to wear masks for the next 300 years," Cruz told the CPAC audience. "And by the way, not just one mask, two, three, four. You can't have too many masks. How much virtue do you want to signal? This is just dumb."

This month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance with a study that said wearing a "cloth mask over a medical procedure mask" could substantially reduce exposure to Covid-19.

And last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it was "possible" that Americans would continue wearing masks into 2022 even though much of the country might reach "a significant degree of normality" by the end of this year.

Earlier in the speech, Cruz seemed to mock Ocasio-Cortez's fear during the violent Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

"Bernie's wearing mittens and AOC is telling us she was murdered," Cruz said.

Ocasio-Cortez said she feared for her life during the riot during an Instagram Live video in January.

Alabama Man Almost Killed by Pack of Dogs in 'Horrific' Attack

An Alabama man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition this week after being mauled by a pack of dogs outside his home.

Eric Roney, 33, suffered puncture wounds across his entire body during the attack on Monday morning in Chunchula, Mobile County. A family member has said he remains sedated and was placed on a ventilator.

Roney will need surgeries including reconstructive procedures to his face and ears, but these cannot be carried out yet because his condition is not stable, his family told news outlet WALA.

The victim's relatives said the man was set upon by at least five dogs during a "horrific" attack and sustained "hundreds" of wounds, according to WALA.

It is believed the dogs were of mixed hound breeds. "There's hardly a place on his body that's not eaten," said Myland Johnson, the victim's grandfather.

Johnson told WALA his son Donald had heard noises outside at about 2 a.m and initially thought the dogs had spotted a bear. But when he went to investigate, he saw Eric "on the ground in a fetal position and the dogs just eating on him."

Relatives said doctors told the victim's mother to contact family members because they thought it was possible he would not survive his injuries.

Mobile County Animal Control said it had not been determined how many of the canines mauled the man, but they seized seven dogs believed to be responsible from a home on nearby Diane Lane. It said all seven would be tested for rabies before being euthanized.

A relative of the dogs' owner, who was not identified by name, told WALA they had been trained as guard dogs and had escaped after an electric fence lost power.

In Myanmar, one woman said, “The government took over and now they redoing the election.”

O’Sullivan then asked, “Would you like to see happen?”

“I would like to see it,” one man replied.

Sounding stunned, O’Sullivan asked, “Really?”

“You know why? Because the election was stolen from us!” another woman answered.

These dangerous ideas are given credence by some Republicans who are currently in office. Just this week Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin echoed plenty of what was heard during the segment.

Johnson lied during a Senate hearing that was examining what happened last month, claiming that the mob who attacked the Capitol on January 6th was full of “fake Trump protesters.”

And with the constant false accusations from the right about being canceled or censored combined with their drumbeat of lies about the so-called fake news media, it’s not a surprise that one woman claimed divine intervention because CNN spoke with her.

Juror Removed From Trial for Trusting God Over Evidence. Juror thinking about Jesus How much can a juror in a trial trust to faith?

If you’re serving as a juror on a court case, can you simply ignore the evidence and trust that God will steer you in the right direction? One juror in Florida was kicked off the jury bench for saying that God told them the defendant is not guilty, despite evidence to the contrary.

The incident raises some big questions, such as what is God’s proper role – if any – in a court of law?
Broken Promises

First, a bit of background info.

The case being decided was a big one: Former U.S. Rep Corrine Brown was on trial for setting up a sham charity and keeping the cash sent in from wealthy donors.

The charity, One Door for Education, was purportedly helping Florida’s neediest children get a good education. In reality, it was a slush fund for Rep. Brown to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and only gifted a single $1,000 scholarship to one student. She was eventually busted and charged with fraud.

A politician being put on trial is always going to make headlines. But here's where things got even more interesting.
God Says Not Guilty

A jury member wrote a note to the judge, claiming that a fellow juror (known as Juror #13) was relying on the Holy Spirit to make a judgment in the case, instead of looking to the facts.

“With all due respect, I’m a little concerned about a statement made by Juror #13 when we began deliberation,” the note began. It went on to quote Juror #13 as saying “a Higher Being told me Corrine Brown was Not Guilty of all charges” and that he “trusted the Holy Ghost."

The judge called lawyers from both sides to discuss what to do with Juror 13.

Brown’s lawyer argued that Juror #13 trusting God’s word was similar to how Christians might weigh other big decisions in their life. Christians, after all, look to God for guidance on other big decisions in their lives. Why not this?

The argument from the prosecution was that Juror #13 can talk with God all they want, but if that’s the only evidence they use in their judgment, then that disqualifies them from serving on an impartial jury.

The judge agreed, and Juror #13 was dismissed, and Corinne Brown was sentenced to five years in prison.
