State Lawmakers Have Introduced Nearly 400 Anti-Abortion Bills This Year
Anti-abortion lawmakers are hopeful that one of their bills will be the vehicle used to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In January and February, as the country continued to grapple with the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, state lawmakers introduced 384 anti-abortion bills, according to an analysis by the Guttmacher Institute.

The sheer number of bills targeting abortion access so far in 2021 is notable. In the past decade, only one other year ― 2017 ― saw a comparable level of legislative action in the first two months of the year.

“Despite the historic challenges facing state legislatures, including a pandemic and economic recession, anti-abortion policymakers are instead focusing scarce time and resources on restricting abortion rights,” said Elizabeth Nash, associate director of state issues and author of the report, in a statement.

In Tennessee, for example, state lawmakers introduced a measure that would allow a man who gets a woman pregnant to request an injunction barring her from obtaining an abortion.

Eight abortion restrictions have already been enacted, including a measure in South Carolina that bans abortion after 6 weeks pregnancy, which is before many women know they are pregnant. The law has been temporarily blocked in court.

Texas lawmaker: Biden administration didn't cause influx of migrants at border

Rep. Veronica Escobar on Sunday pushed back on claims that the Biden administration's rollbacks of Trump-era immigration policies have caused a surge in undocumented migrants at the Southern border, saying such an argument "obscures the bigger picture."

"This is not something that happened as a result of Joe Biden becoming president," the Texas Democrat said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. "We saw the increases dating back almost a year, and this was during the Trump administration."

The number of migrant children detained at the border has tripled in recent weeks; host Jake Tapper pointed out that more than 4,000 children are currently in Border Patrol custody.

“What we are seeing today is the consequence of four years of dismantling every system in place to address this with humanity and compassion," Escobar said.

She cited administration officials at Health and Human Services and other departments working to reduce the number of days children are detained before being moved to licensed facilities reunited with their families.

"Tucker Carlson is the new Donald Trump," CNN's Chief Media Correspondent Brian Stelter said on "Reliable Sources" Sunday.

Carlson is practically the face of Fox News, as he hosts the top show on the network. With Republicans out of power in the White House and Congress, Stelter argues that Carlson has filled the void Trump left when he was voted out of office.

"Tucker has taken Trump's place as a right-wing leader, as an outrage generator as a fire-starter, and it's all taking place on Fox, just as Trump's campaign did," Stelter said.

"Every day, Carlson is throwing bombs, making online memes, offending millions of people also delighting millions of others, tapping into White male rage and resentment, stoking distrust of big tech and the media, generally coursening the discourse, never apologizing for anything and setting the GOP's agenda. Sounds like a recently retired president, right?"

This past week alone, Carlson mocked women in the armed forces, harassed New York Times reporter Taylor Lorenz and tried to rewrite the history surrounding George Floyd's death.

He wrote an opinion piece for Fox News' website titled, "Everything the media didn't tell you about the death of George Floyd." And on Tuesday, he went on air and said, "Pregnant women are going to fight our wars. It's a mockery of the US military."

"He lies strategically and carefully," Erik Wemple, media critic at the Washington Post, said of Carlson.

Former co-workers of an Army reservist who has been charged in taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot described him as an avowed white supremacist who did not make any effort to hide his dislike of Jews.

It was no secret that Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, who worked as a security contractor and held a secret-level security clearance, was a racist.

When he was arrested Jan. 15 and accused of storming the Capitol, prosecutors characterized him as an “avowed white supremacist” who sympathized with the Nazis. But a new court filing, which was first reported by Politico, included results from an extensive Naval Criminal Investigative Service probe that revealed troubling details about his views that were well known to his co-workers.

Investigators interviewed 44 of Hale-Cusanelli’s colleagues and 34 of them agreed he held “extremist or radical views pertaining to the Jewish people, minorities, and women.”

One even said that he talked daily about how much he disliked Jews and a supervisor said he once had to discipline him for sporting a “Hitler mustache.” A colleague recalled that Hale-Cusanelli once said “Hitler should have finished the job.”

Pastors are trying to fight conspiracy theories and misinformation that have gripped churches.

Insider spoke to two pastors who left their congregation after watching members become radicalized.

More than a quarter of white evangelicals believe in the QAnon conspiracy theory, research shows.

On the morning of the Capitol riot, Vern Swieringa told his wife during a walk with their dogs: "Something is going to happen today. I don't know what, but something's going to happen today."

The Christian Reformed Church pastor from Michigan had been watching for months as some members of his congregation grew captivated by videos about the QAnon conspiracy theory on social media, openly discussing sex trafficking and Satan-worshipping pedophiles.

He had watched as other spiritual advisors, including the self-proclaimed "Trump Prophet" Mark Taylor, incorporated wild and dangerous QAnon beliefs into their sermons on YouTube, and as organizers of the Christian Jericho March gathered in Washington, DC, days before the insurrection, urging followers to "pray, march, fast, and rally for election integrity."

So, when hundreds of President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol hours after his premonition, Swieringa was shocked, but not surprised.

The pastor said he had been worried about so-called "Christian nationalism" since Trump was elected into office in 2016. (Neither Swieringa nor any of the other pastors interviewed for this story say who they voted for in 2016 or 2020.)

He became even more concerned when, in 2018, some elderly members in his own congregation started sending him "disturbing" QAnon videos. When Swieringa brought these to the attention of his superiors, they were mostly dismissive, telling him they didn't know what QAnon was.

... Now, 54 years later, it is necessary to ask the federal government to intervene in the state again. Many of the primarily Black residents of Mississippi's capital, Jackson, spent weeks without running water after a cold spell burst a huge number of the city's pipes. According to Mississippi Today, over 40,000 people, the equivalent of a sold-out game at Wrigley Field, were not able to drink, bathe or wash clothes, dishes, hands or even flush toilets -- all during a pandemic.

Over the past several days, the city has made significant progress in repairs, restoring water to most of its residents. However, two major, potentially deadly issues remain.

First, the water pressure is extremely low and unreliable in certain neighborhoods, particularly in the poorer parts of south Jackson. More importantly, city testing has revealed that the water in Jackson is still unsafe to drink, as USA Today reported, "because of high turbidity -- cloudiness that increases the possibility water might contain disease-causing organisms."

The capital of an American state is still under a boil-water advisory -- an advisory originally issued nearly a month ago, on February 16. Jackson's problems, like those of so many other US towns and cities, are a blight on the political ideals White Americans traditionally claim.

Jackson, Mississippi, is a microcosm of our nation's massive failures to make amends for centuries of colonialism, slavery and racism. The story of Jackson is like those of Flint, Michigan; Centreville, Illinois; and Shreveport, Louisiana. While the details from each city may vary, the core issue that binds these places together in anguish is painfully obvious.

Our problem, our shame, is that American poverty springs not from lack of funds, but instead from White supremacy.

Due to the ravages of history -- from slavery and the failures of Reconstruction to more modern tactics of redlining, White flight and the crisis of mass incarceration -- poverty in America is almost always dependent on racism, even when the impoverished are White.

From pitting laborers of different races against each other to stoking racist and xenophobic fears through a sensationalistic and profit-driven media, America's White elite have always used the specter of racism to prevent the formation of a broad coalition of people with similar class interests, regardless of race.

And poor and working-class whites historically have been all-too-willing to join in this Faustian bargain.

We are one of the richest nations in the world, but among those nations, we are one of the most unequal. Nearly all other developed nations offer a better standard of living to their citizens, regardless of income or wealth.

Fauci Says Vaccine Hesitancy Among Republicans Poses a Risk

Reluctance among Republicans to receiving a vaccine is one of the biggest risks to coronavirus control efforts, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser said, although one GOP governor said attitudes may change.

“I just don’t get it,” Anthony Fauci, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked about polling showing many Republicans, especially men, don’t want a vaccine.

He noted the various diseases that have been stamped out with vaccines, including polio and smallpox.

A PBS News Hour/NPR/Marist poll released Thursday showed that 41% of people who identify as Republicans, including 49% of GOP-leaning men, said they had no plans to get one of the three federally approved coronavirus vaccines.

Among Democratic-leaning men, only 6% said the same.

“We’ve got to dissociate political persuasion from common sense, no-brainer public health things,” Fauci said.

Biden gave the Homeland Security Department 60 days to review the contracts Trump signed and figure out which can be canceled, which can't, and which should be renegotiated. Wall critics want Biden to tear down these isolated fragments of Trump's $15 billion signature project.

Republican leaders are calling on Biden to fill in the blank sections.

Trying to up the pressure, 40 Senate Republicans are accusing Biden on Wednesday of unlawfully freezing border wall construction, focusing on the funds appropriated by Congress rather than those Trump unilaterally siphoned from DHS and Pentagon budgets, Politico reports. In a letter to the Government Accountability Office, the GOP senators claim Biden's wall pause infringed on "Congress' constitutional power of the purse" and "directly contributed to this unfortunate, yet entirely avoidable" migrant "crisis" on the southern border.

On the southern border, "property owners are still waiting to hear whether Biden's Justice Department will abort land condemnation cases initiated during border wall construction," and "people who live near the river want to know whether the federal government plans to restore flood levees damaged by unfinished border wall projects before hurricane season begins," The Washington Post reports. Otherwise, the border is the same it always is when a new administration takes over.

The elections of Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock in Georgia on January 5 allowed Democrats to take control of the US Senate and made the passage of the ambitious, transformational American Rescue Plan possible.

Yet while the rescue plan did not receive the support of a single Republican in the US Senate or US House of Representatives, according to a recent CNN poll, 61% of Americans supported the bill -- with several key provisions garnering even greater support, including the $1,400 stimulus checks and larger tax credits for families.

This disparity between who is heard and who speaks matters. The 50 senators who moved this bill forward represent 41.5 million more Americans than the 50 senators who opposed it (one Republican senator missed the vote but still acknowledged his opposition to it).

Further, were it not for a budget bill loophole of the Senate's historically racist and indisputably undemocratic filibuster rule, a bill that will slash poverty, save businesses and deploy vaccines nationwide would have failed.

These dramatic changes are happening only because of the willingness of voters to brave obstacles, threats and the pandemic to cast ballots in November 2020 and again, in Georgia, in January 2021.

Together, millions of Americans banded together to elect President Joe Biden, and then to send Georgia's first Jewish and first Black senators to Washington, DC. That these men came from a former Confederate state is not lost on those who know its history.

Shamefully but not surprisingly, Republican state legislators in Georgia and across the country have responded to Democratic victories by attempting to resurrect parts of that painful history. They have responded to record numbers of voters of color and young voters by pressing legislation to stifle their participation.

This is not hyperbole: according to the Brennan Center for Justice, Republicans have proposed more than 250 voter suppression bills in 43 states, leaning on the decentralization of election laws that limit an eligible voter's registration access and ability to vote depending on the state in which the voter lives.

Black and brown voters in Georgia, Latinx and Native American voters in Arizona and young voters in New Hampshire are particularly vulnerable. In each of these states, these voters have played a critical role in statewide Democratic victories, despite Republican domination of the governorship and the state legislatures.

Across the country, many Republicans have weaponized the 2020 election lies as the impetus to propose sweeping efforts to suppress voter access. The litany of proposed changes is dizzying -- from making voting by mail more difficult by eliminating no-excuse absentee voting, to limiting early voting options to restricting ballot drop box locations.

Yet, in states like Arizona and Georgia, Republicans have routinely relied on a variety of available voting options to regularly win elections. For example, a bipartisan report by Republican and Democratic strategists found that in state after state, voting by mail can -- and does -- benefit both parties.

But state Republicans now want to change the rules because constituencies that do not vote for them in large numbers -- Black, brown and young Americans -- voted against them in the 2020 election and 2021 Georgia runoff.

In Georgia, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed HB 531, a bill that, among other suppressive measures, limits weekend early voting. Sunday voting is used disproportionately by Black voters who engage in the "Souls to the Polls" tradition, often voting with fellow Black voters after attending church.

The chief sponsor of this legislation is state representative Barry Fleming, a man who as county attorney defended the county's practice of sending deputy sheriffs to the homes of Black voters demanding they prove their voting eligibility.

Eliminating voter access under the guise of race-neutral actions that clearly target communities of color is nothing short of Jim Crow 2.0. And, then as now, only the federal government has the power to stop race-based voter suppression and make sure that Americans' access to democracy does not depend on the state where they live. We saw it work in 1965 with the Voting Rights Act. Now is the time to defend democracy again.

The clashes over who can vote, where and when could define the future of America's political system and therefore represents one of the most important issues currently before the country.

Many of the disputes between Republicans and Democrats concern rules and procedures that were introduced to make voting -- the core and vital bedrock of a democratic system -- easier and more universal amid the pandemic.

Abrams was asked about Georgia state bills that would end automatic voter registration and limit voting by mail and Sunday voting, all steps that experts say disproportionately target Black voters who tend to vote for Democrats.

"I do absolutely agree that it's racist. It is a redux of Jim Crow in a suit and tie," Abrams told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," referring to historic state and local laws that institutionalized racism and segregation in the 19th and 20th centuries.

A new report lays out the hardships students say they faced after reporting sexual assaults to their schools.

In the latest attempt to ramp up pressure on the Biden administration to overhaul regulations on how schools deal with sexual misconduct, the advocacy group Know Your IX released a 37-page report Monday describing hardships students say they’ve experienced after filing Title IX complaints.

The report, based on testimonials from 107 students who reported sexual violence to their schools over the past decade, described students dropping out of college, feeling suicidal and facing threats of defamation lawsuits from the accused. Two students said their attackers hired a private investigator to track them, while two others described developing chronic nervous system disorders from the stress of their assaults and the school investigations.

Know Your IX’s report highlights what victims’ rights advocates see as urgent and long-standing problems with how sexual assault victims are treated on campuses. The group is calling on the Department of Education to reverse changes to Title IX rules spearheaded by former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, which gave more protection to accused students. The group is also demanding that the Education Department provide resources to ease the physical and financial toll students face after a sexual assault.

"Student survivors need immediate action on Title IX. What seems like just a few months to nonstudents is an entire semester for a student," said Sage Carson, manager of Know Your IX. "Survivors can’t spend another semester, let alone another four years, with the current status of the Title IX regulation."

Terry White, 65, who said she doesn’t believe in the coronavirus pandemic, can be seen telling a responding officer at a Galveston, Texas, Bank of America that Gov. As the argument escalates, the officer says: “Ma’am, listen: We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”

The 16-year-old daughter of a Texas militia leader who allegedly charged at Capitol Police officers on Jan. 6 — and claimed he took a firearm to the building — testified on his behalf Monday in an unusual virtual hearing.

But the judge ruling on bail issues in the case, Magistrate Zia Faruqui, ordered the defendant, Guy Reffitt, to remain in jail pending trial because of the danger he poses to the broader community.

Lifting people out of poverty will help everyone economically, said Heather McGhee, former president of think tank Demos.

“Poverty is a policy choice.

The more families we have with enough economic security, and by that, I mean simply cash in the bank to be able to meet their needs and invest in their dreams, the better off we'll all be,”

McGhee, author of “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together,” told Yahoo Finance Live.

McGhee called the zero-sum game theory in economics a “lie.”

The idea that "there's sort of only so much good to go around, that progress for one group has to come at the expense of the other. One dollar more in my pocket must mean $1 less than yours,” is simply not true, she said.

“As economists, we know that's absolutely not the way it works.” she explained. “What I discovered in my research is that that mindset, that is the biggest impediment to our progress in America is this zero-sum world view.”

It’s an idea held by the majority of white Americans and less so by people of color, according to McGhee,.

A study from Citi (C) estimated that racism has cost our economy $16 trillion over the last two decades. It’s a combined cost of disparities in wages, education, investment in Black-owned businesses, and the housing market.

“Our economy would be larger… if we had closed the racial economic divides,” McGhee said, citing a separate study from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco that found that race and gender disparities cut U.S. GDP by nearly $3 trillion.

“We know that our economy needs every single player on the field, off the sidelines, scoring points for our whole team.

And yet, so often when we talk about racism, it comes through this filter of winners and losers, the us and the them.”

“And I think that has been the detriment. And frankly, it's been something that we have heard from people who want to keep us divided, right, the sort of scapegoating and demonizing and stereotypes about the other,” she added.

McGhee discussed the historical event of "drained pools," likening it to America today. In Montgomery, Alabama, officials chose to drain the public pool instead of integrating — preventing not just Black people, but also white ones from using it.

“Oftentimes, when racial justice advocates (like I consider myself one) talk about racism, we actually end up sort of marketing it to white people, saying how great racism has been for white folks. And of course, that's true,” she said.

“But it's also true that the drained pool has left everybody poor.”

The "drained pool" is evident today, where in the midst of the pandemic many Americans are reaping the financial benefits as the stock market hits record highs. Meanwhile, millions of Americans continue to be out of work and struggling.

McGhee said the current racial wealth gap is harming everyone.

“We simply can't keep letting compound interest on bad racist decisions hamstring some of our best players going into the future.

And that's what these persistent and recurring racial inequalities all have in common,” she said. “They're hamstringing so many members of the American team. And it's costing us all.

Trump faces an onslaught of legal problems, as investigations and dozens of lawsuits trail him from Washington to Florida.

The district attorney is sifting through millions of pages of his tax records. The state attorney general has subpoenaed his lawyers, his bankers, his chief financial officer — even one of his sons.

And that’s just in New York. Former president Donald Trump is also facing criminal investigations in Georgia and the District of Columbia related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

And Trump must defend himself against a growing raft of lawsuits: 29 are pending at last count, including some seeking damages from Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, when he encouraged a march to the Capitol that ended in a mob storming the building.

No charges have been filed against Trump in any of these investigations. The outcome of these lawsuits is uncertain. Trump has raised more than $31 million for his post-presidential political action committee, which he could tap to pay legal fees.

Deadly Super Yeast Found in the Wild for the First Time

A frightening superbug yeast that’s killing people in hospitals can also survive just fine outside of them, according to a new study out Tuesday. For the first time, researchers say they’ve discovered multidrug-resistant strains of the fungus Candida auris in a natural environment, in the remote wetlands of India.

The findings indicate that these sorts of environments could be the yeast’s native home, while also providing evidence that warming temperatures due to climate change have recently made the fungus dangerous to humans, as some scientists have theorized.

C. auris was first discovered in 2009 by doctors in Japan, who isolated it from a patient’s ear infection (the first known cases date back to the mid-1990s, however). Since then, the yeast has been found in over a dozen countries, including the U.S. It can cause life-threatening infections, especially in already weakened hospital patients.

But what makes the yeast especially scary is that it’s often resistant to multiple antifungal medications at once, making these infections difficult to treat and frequently fatal. The fungus is also a survivor outside of the human body, so once it’s established somewhere, it’s incredibly hard to remove it from the environment. If that wasn’t enough, C. auris can’t be identified easily through conventional tests, which can delay care and increase the risk of death.

There have only been around 1,600 cases of the yeast identified in the U.S. since 2009, but it’s considered one of the most serious emerging germ threats we face today. That threat has made understanding its origins and likely recent introduction to people all the more important. This new study, published in mBio on Tuesday, seems to provide the first real clues to that mystery.

Researchers in India and Canada went looking in environmental niches of India largely isolated from humans that could have been habitable for the yeast, based on its known biology and that of related species. They collected soil and water samples from the coastal wetlands of the Andaman Islands, an archipelago not far from the mainland.

In two of the eight sites they searched—a salt marsh and a sandy beach—they found the fungus. The team found strains of C. auris that were susceptible and resistant to antifungals, and these strains bore a close genetic resemblance to strains collected from patients in India.

Altogether, their work on C. auris suggests that “prior to its recognition as a human pathogen, it existed as an environmental fungus,” the authors wrote.

Compared to other species of Candida, C. auris is known to thrive especially well in warmer temperatures. That’s made some researchers wonder if climate change played a part in in its emergence as a human germ. The theory argues that changes to the climate in their natural environment led the yeast to slightly adapt and become even more tolerant of warmer temperatures—the exact sort of temperatures that would make humans and other mammals a comfortable home once the yeast started regularly coming into contact with us.

The new findings seem to add more weight to that theory. Aside from showing that these fungi can and do live far from people, the team found subtle differences between the samples they found.

One strain of yeast found in the more remote salt march was slower to grow under warmer temperatures than the strains found on the sandy beach and another salt march strain; this strain was also the only one found to be susceptible to common antifungals and less closely related to the strains seen in people.

Meanwhile, the other strains were all resistant to antifungals and more warm-loving. The strains found on the beach, where people do visit sometimes, could have been reintroduced to the environment by humans, which could explain why they were more closely related to the strains found in patients.

A much-cited Congressional Budget Office estimate doesn’t reflect the best economic evidence

Opponents of raising the minimum wage have seized on a recent report by the Congressional Budget Office that estimated that increasing it to $15 an hour by 2025 would cause 1.4 million Americans to lose their jobs. These “significant job losses,” according to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce vice president, provide reason enough to abandon the Biden administration’s plan to help low-income workers.

First, it important to recognize the CBO also observes that income gains resulting from the wage increase are substantially greater than the reduction in income from job losses, thereby lifting nearly a million people out of poverty. Nonetheless, the report’s assumptions about job losses are problematic — significantly out of step with modern research on the subject.

A recent survey of the evidence in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, for instance, by the labor economist Alan Manning, carried an apt title that captures scholars’ views far better: “The Elusive Employment Effects of Minimum Wages.” Obviously, there is some point at which a high minimum wage would reduce employment, Manning explained, but the past few decades of research suggest “the currently observed range of minimum wages apparently does not include the turning-point.” (Note that several states already are on paths toward a $15-per-hour minimum.)

What does “fairly small” mean, in this context? I looked at 55 different academic studies of episodes where a minimum wage was introduced or raised — 36 in the United States, 11 in other developed countries.

I found that for the typical study in the middle of the range of demonstrated effects, when average pay of affected workers rises by 10 percent after a mandated wage increase, their employment falls by at most 2 percent.

But the studies that found job losses of that scale large tended to focus on narrow groups of affected workers (often teens or young adults) — who may be particularly affected. When I focused on studies that looked at overall low-wage workforce, the evidence on job losses were minute: In those cases, the job loss from the same 10 percent increase in average wage of affected workers amounts to maybe 0.5 percent. At that level of job loss, the wage gains far offset the losses: The low-wage workforce as a whole is better off from the policy.

Global emissions of heat-trapping gases fell dramatically last year as the pandemic forced much of the world to a halt. But new data has shown they are bouncing back -- fast.

Lockdown measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus caused a 7% drop in CO2 emissions over the course of 2020 -- the biggest drop ever recorded -- a study published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change estimates.

But its authors warn that unless governments prioritize green investment in their attempts to boost their struggling economies, the world is going to see a strong rebound in emissions -- with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Corinne Le Quéré, one of the authors of the study and a professor of climate change science at the University of East Anglia, said the big, pandemic-induced drop in emissions in April was short-lived.

Once lockdowns started to lift, emissions bounced back strongly.

"Because nothing has changed around us," she said. "The confinement measures are a forced behavior change, they are not lasting."

And while the world's battle with Covid-19 is far from over, emissions have already recovered.

Climate crisis: An invisible, odorless gas is pitting Texas against the Biden administration

Deep in the heart of Texas, above an oil patch about the size of Kansas, a little team in a small plane is trying to reveal a big problem.

They are methane hunters. With an infrared camera and a Picarro Cavity Ring-Down Laser Spectroscope, they fly spirals over pumps and compressor stations that stretch to both horizons. With each tight corkscrew, the little airplane sniffs out and measures planet-cooking, climate-changing pollution as the region below braces for an energy revolution amid a cold civil war.

The Picarro spectrometer is so sensitive, it caught the number of carbon dioxide molecules in my breath as we walked around the hangar. In the sky, it counts the density of carbon dioxide molecules on their way to heating up the sea, land and sky for the next 300 to 1,000 years.

More importantly, it also measures methane, which is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over the next 20 years. You know it better as natural gas. Heating and cooking are not the only methane culprits. Two-thirds of emissions come from belching cows, factory farms and rotting landfills. But as any Texan will tell you, it's a lot easier to control gas coming out of the ground than gas coming out of cows.

The "greenhouse effect" was discovered before women could vote (by a suffragist, in fact) but in 2021, the indoor gardening metaphor doesn't match the emergency. Instead, imagine a baby in a hot car. Carbon dioxide is like the steel and glass holding in the sun's rays as they bounce through the windshield. Methane provides the equivalent of cranking up the heater inside the car; it works much faster but is easier to control in the long term. Planet Earth, of course, is the baby.

Without the tools of a methane hunter, you can't see or smell natural gas but virtually all of Earth's peer-reviewed scientists agree that for life on Earth to survive with any semblance of today, it must go the way of the dodo along with coal and oil. Climatologists at NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tell us that deadly changes will only get worse until people stop using fuels that burn and leak.

But in Texas, methane is so plentiful and cheap, it escaped largely unseen and unmeasured until both the Environmental Defense Fund and oil producers started using tools like the Picarro spectrometer. Scientific Aviation, based in Boulder, Colorado, owns this one and will sniff the sky for all kinds of customers, but only the EDF makes the data public.

"What we found here in the Permian Basin is that operators are wasting enough gas to heat about 2 million homes a year," says Kelsey Robinson, project manager for the EDF's PermianMAP Project.


"We found that the Permian Basin is emitting more than double any other oil and gas region in the United States," Robinson said.

Banning all bans

Named after Earth's biggest mass extinction event, the Permian Basin is so flat you'd swear you can see the curvature of Earth standing in the bed of a pickup. When oily, gassy, flammable proof of the Great Dying — the nickname given to the mass-extinction event that marked the end of the Permian geologic period — was found under the red dirt, Midland and Odessa grew into the vena cava of the state's oil industry, the setting for "Friday Night Lights" and the perfect place for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to fire the first shot in a methane civil war of 2021.

"I'm in Midland to make clear that Texas is going to protect the oil and gas industry from any type of hostile attack launched from Washington, DC," Abbott said, days after Biden signed his first round of executive orders aimed at a climate in crisis.

Then the Republican governor signed an executive order of his own, commanding every state agency to bring him every reason to sue and stop the Biden administration's clean energy efforts. In calling out cities like San Francisco, where a movement to ban natural gas heaters and appliances from new construction is growing, Abbott vowed to ban all bans.

"In Texas, we will not let cities use political correctness to dictate what energy source you use," he said. "So I am supporting legislation that prohibits cities and counties from banning natural gas appliances."

But as a sign of the changing times, Abbott's fierce opposition to the Paris Accord puts him at odds with the statements and soundbites of Big Oil's biggest lobbyist.

"We think the threat of climate change is very real," Mike Sommers, CEO of the American Petroleum Institute (API), told CNN. "We support both industry actions and actions by the federal government in the United States and around the globe to address this very important issue that we know is existential in nature."

As more European energy companies embrace a green transition, France's Total became the first oil giant to tear up its API membership, citing differences over a carbon tax, electric car subsidies and ... methane. In October, the French government stepped in to block a $7 billion deal, deciding that liquified natural gas from Texas is too dirty for their standards.

But Sommers says the API is willing to work with the Biden administration on regulating new and existing sources of methane.

The United Nations released a report Thursday on the health of the planet that proposes a radical shift in the way mankind thinks about it.

The report, "Making Peace with Nature," spans 168 pages and distills the latest science on climate change and mankind's "war" on the planet. It also argues that amid our pursuit of wealth and security, humans must now learn to value the fundamental "natural capital" of geology, soil, air and water -- and urgently.

"For too long, we have been waging a senseless and suicidal war on nature," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a news briefing Thursday presenting the report. "The result is three interlinked environmental crises: climate disruption, biodiversity loss and pollution that threaten our viability as a species."

"We are destroying the planet, placing our own health and prosperity at risk," said Inger Andersen, executive director of the United Nations Environment Program, which released the report.

The world is far from meeting its agreed objectives to protect the planet. Species and ecosystems are vanishing faster than ever, despite long-standing global commitments to protect them. While the ozone layer is slowly being restored, mankind has fallen off track to limit global warming as envisioned in the landmark Paris Agreement, the report says.

"At the current rate, warming will reach 1.5°C by around 2040 and possibly earlier. Taken together, current national policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions put the world on a pathway to warming of at least 3°C by 2100," it reads

Invasive mosquito species makes its way to the U.S.

A breed of mosquitos new to the United States has been found in Florida and entomologists worry they could bring with them new diseases that affect humans.

Aedes scapularis, according to NPR, is known to carry Yellow Fever in South America. Whether or not the species spreads the disease to humans isn’t clear, but it reportedly likes to be indoors.
“If you end up with a species that’s capable of transmitting to bats and likes to also bite humans, that’s the prime condition for a spillover event,” University of Florida researcher Lindsay Campbell told NPR.

The COVID-19 pandemic is believed to have been the result of a “spillover event,” possibly involving animals such as bats.

Campbell recently co-authored a study about the mosquitos’ spread throughout Florida with her colleague Lawrence Reeves, who came across the bloodsuckers in the Everglades in 2019. DNA testing confirmed the bugs to be Aedes scapularis.

In 2020, Campbell concluded the newcomers had moved into Miami-Dade and Broward counties in south Florida. His new study with Campbell suggests they are migrating north into Florida’s Gulf and Atlantic coasts.

Climate change and global trade reportedly contribute to the spread of invasive species. NPR reports that 10 new species of mosquitos have been found in Florida since 2000. Researchers are concerned about the Aedes vittatus mosquito from India, which has found its way to Cuba, just 90 miles from Florida’s southern tip. That breed is a vector for Zika and dengue fever.

A coalition of environmental groups backed by Democratic governors is launching a $10 million-plus ad campaign pressuring the Biden administration and Congress to spend trillions on climate change and clean energy as Washington gears up for its next fight over President Joe Biden's infrastructure and jobs plan.

Dubbed "The Great American Build," the campaign aims to set an aggressive starting point for negotiations over the size and scope of the infrastructure package, which is coming into focus as Biden's next major push after last week's passage of the $1.9 trillion Covid-19 relief package.

Biden campaigned on spending even more on infrastructure and green jobs. But many Democrats have said they are concerned that his commitment to reaching out to Republicans, combined with a lack of appetite for another huge round of spending so soon after the Covid-19 deal, could lead to a scaled-back infrastructure deal that would fall short of the trillions they say is needed to address the climate problem.

The first TV ad, which starts airing Tuesday on cable, uses black-and-white images of blue-collar workers to argue that America's builders, roofers, electricians and steelworkers would be the ones to benefit from investing heavily in new, climate-friendly infrastructure, reinforcing the Biden administration's claim that clean infrastructure and jobs go hand in hand.

"Your country is calling you to rebuild America, to create a cleaner, safe, more prosperous future for all," the ad says. "Tackling climate change — this is the job of our lifetime."

Organizers said they were spending more than $10 million on the campaign, which will include grassroots organizing and additional TV ads. The first ad was produced by Pereira O'Dell, the advertising house that recently created an ad featuring former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Suspect in deadly Atlanta-area spa shootings says he was motivated by sex addiction, sheriff says

A man accused of killing eight people in three shootings at Atlanta-area spas told investigators he had a sexual addiction and saw the businesses as a temptation that he needed to eliminate, officials said Wednesday.

Those details, which emerged during a morning press conference with Atlanta's mayor and other top officials, offered the first glimpse of what may have motivated Robert Aaron Long to go on a two-county shooting spree Tuesday evening.

The attacks began around 5 p.m. Tuesday, when four people were killed near Acworth in Cherokee County, authorities said. Less than an hour later, four women were killed in two shootings in Atlanta in Fulton County.

It's unclear if the businesses had any ties to sex work.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said the spas were "legally operating businesses that have not been on our radar," and "we are not about to get into victim blaming, victim shaming here."

The victims in Atlanta were Asian women, as were two of the victims in Acworth, officials said. The two other victims were white, and one man who was injured was stable.

…Authorities arrested Long, 21, of Woodstock, after a brief manhunt, Cherokee County sheriff's Capt. Jay Baker said.

He was arrested in Crisp County, about 125 miles south of Atlanta, and extradited later to Cherokee County, officials said.

Long was charged with four counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault in Cherokee County and has no bond. He is set to be arraigned Thursday morning.

Baker said Wednesday that the suspect likely acted alone.

"These locations, he sees them as an outlet for him, something he shouldn’t be doing," he said, adding that Long indicated he had an "issue with porn" and was "attempting to take out that temptation."

Ammon Bundy won't wear mask in courthouse so judge has him arrested for failure to appear

(CNN)Ammon Bundy, who was to go on trial after being charged with trespassing in the Idaho Statehouse last year, was arrested Monday after he refused to wear a mask in court.

According to Ada County Sheriff spokesperson Patrick Orr, the Idaho Supreme Court has a mask mandate for anyone entering a courthouse, but when Bundy showed up Monday morning for the first day of his jury trial he wouldn't wear one and was denied entry.

Magistrate Judge David Manweiler then issued a warrant for failure to appear, a misdemeanor.

Bundy was arrested and taken to the Ada County Jail where he is being held on $10,000 bond, Orr said.

CNN reached out to Bundy for comment but didn't get an immediate reply. It is unclear whether he has an attorney.

Bundy faces misdemeanor charges of trespassing and resisting arrest linked to the August incident at the Idaho Statehouse. He was arrested for refusing to leave the Capitol in Boise during a special session of the legislature.

"Troopers were forced to physically remove Bundy from the Senate Gallery," police said at the time.
Bundy and others were at the Capitol demanding an end to the state of emergency.

He made national news in 2016 when he led an armed occupation of federal land in Oregon. The takeover of a wildlife refuge headquarters lasted 41 days.

One man from the group, LaVoy Finicum, was shot and killed during an attempted traffic stop weeks into the occupation. Bundy was among several people arrested.

He and others were indicted by a federal grand jury, but he was acquitted of firearms charges and conspiracy to impede federal workers.

Bundy is the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who in 2014 engaged in an armed showdown with the federal Bureau of Land Management over grazing rights for his cattle.

Michigan man charged with threatening to kill Biden, Pelosi and Whitmer

(Reuters) - Michigan state prosecutors have charged a 21-year-old man with threatening to kill President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, all Democrats, saying he claimed to "be the catalyst" for an American revolution, officials said on Tuesday.

Whitmer previously had been the target of right-wing militia extremists who plotted to kidnap her ahead of last November's election, according to U.S. prosecutors.

The new and separate charges come as U.S. law enforcement officials including FBI Director Christopher Wray have warned of the growing threat of homegrown violent extremism in the United States.

The office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Monday charged Joshua Docter, 21, of Holland, Michigan, with threatening terrorism and using a computer to commit a crime. Each count carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The suspect turned himself in on Monday and faced a judge on Tuesday, Nessel's office said in a statement.

A lawyer for Docter could not immediately be identified.

The FBI, which initiated the investigation, received a tip that Docter posted threats on the social media site iFunny, and the case was later taken over by Michigan State Police, the statement said.

"Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has charged a Holland man with crimes for making death threats against President Joe Biden, U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer," the statement said.

"In those posts, Docter stated he would use a gun to shoot and kill the elected officials and would 'be the catalyst' for a new American revolution. Docter also had information on how to make a bomb and where to find the necessary materials on his smart phone," it said.

Police Searching for Suspect Who Punched, Yelled Slurs at Asian Man in NYC

The NYPD is looking for information about a suspect who attacked an Asian man near a playground in the neighborhood of Harlem last month. Authorities released a photo and video clip of the unidentified suspect on Sunday. On Feb. 15, he allegedly pushed a 27-year-old man to the ground before yelling racist remarks at him, reports NY Daily News.

The victim was reportedly attacked at around 10:10 p.m. while he was walking to his car near Fred Samuel Playground on Lenox Ave. at West 139th St. According to the police, the suspect shouted “F---ing Chinese, go back to China” before punching the victim in the face.

(CNN)A coalition tracking reports of racism and discrimination against Asian Americans says it has received at least 3,795 firsthand complaints since last year.

Stop AAPI Hate began tracking violence and harassment against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on March 19 last year.

From then through the end of 2020, Stop AAPI Hate received a total of 3,292 complaints from all 50 states and Washington, DC, according to a Stop AAPI Hate news release.

The coalition, which had previously reported a lower number of complaints for 2020, said some incidents that took place in 2020 were not reported until earlier this year.

There were at least 503 anti-Asian hate incidents reported between January 1 and February 28 according to the group's latest report, released Tuesday.

While the incidents reported through their website likely only represent a portion of the number of hate incidents in the United States, the coalition says those numbers show that anti-Asian sentiment is still prevalent.

"Hate incidents are not abating. We cannot let anti-Asian American hate be a legacy of COVID-19 or the last presidential administration, but that's exactly what will happen unless we demand concrete action," Russell Jeung, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate and professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, said in a statement.

The majority of the incidents -- about 68% -- were cases of verbal harassment, while shunning or avoidance made up about 20.5%. About 11% of the incidents involved physical assaults, according to Stop AAPI Hate.

More than a third of the incidents -- 35.4% -- took place in businesses, 25.3% were in public streets and 9.8% in public parks. Nearly 11% of the reports involved online incidents, according to the organization.

Among those saying they've experience hate, 42.2% identify as Chinese, followed by 14.8% who said are Korean. Vietnamese and Filipinos make 8.5% and 7.9% of those reporting the incidents, respectively.

Man Hits Asian Woman With Hard Object in Latest Unprovoked Attack in NYC

The New York Police Department has asked the public to help identify a man involved in another unprovoked attack in New York City. The assault occurred along East 8th Street at around 12:30 p.m. on March 1. The 18-year-old female victim was reportedly walking when a man approached her and struck her with a hard object, NYPD told NextShark.

He also grabbed the woman by her throat, which resulted in bruising. The suspect then fled the scene, and the woman refused any medical assistance when medics arrived. The male individual and the victim never exchanged words before or during the assault, the police said.

A Virginia man was sentenced on Monday to nearly three years in prison for his role in calling in fake threats to law enforcement as part of an online group associated with white supremacists.

John William Kirby Kelley, 20, managed an online chat room in which the conspirators — including a former leader of the Texas-based neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division — would choose the next victim for their “swatting” calls, in an attempt to trick emergency dispatchers into sending law enforcement to someone’s address, according to court documents.

Many of those who participated held white supremacist views and chose targets based on race, according to a Department of Justice news release. In the chat room, Kelley himself used racial epithets.

Among the group’s targets: journalists, a historic Black church in Virginia, an Islamic Center in Texas, a former U.S. Cabinet member and Old Dominion University, where Kelley used to attend. In November 2018, Kelley suggested that the group target his school, which resulted in a bomb threat on campus.

“Swatting attacks are serious crimes that disrupt the operations of local emergency agencies, take first responders away from real emergencies, and place victims, community members, and law enforcement officers in grave danger,” Raj Parekh, the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said in the release.

Man charged in murder of 75-year-old has history of anti-Asian violence, CA cops say

A 75-year-old Asian man died on Thursday after police in California say he was assaulted and robbed by a man with a history of “victimizing” older Asian Americans.

Pak Ho was taking a walk in his Oakland neighborhood on Tuesday morning when he was approached by 26-year-old Teaunte Bailey, who tried to rob him, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Bailey is accused of shoving Ho, causing him to hit his head on the pavement and suffer a “traumatic head injury and brain damage.”

Ho died two days after the attack, officials said.

Bailey was arrested and charged with several felonies, including murder, according to the Oakland Police Department.

My suspicion is that many people struggle living paycheck to paycheck (or looking for work) and avoiding despair. Race, ethnicity, group identity, political affiliation rarely surface into their individual consciousness day to day; the focus is meeting physiological and safety needs for themselves and their loved ones. Group privilege has little meaning for a homeless man. There is a current cultural perseveration on identity and group allegiance that is breeding contempt and divisiveness, one person at a time. I suspect most people (irrespective of race) prefer to be defined individually by who they are, not by the immutable characteristics of their birth, and believe in the reciprocity of that value.
