City of Minneapolis reaches $27M settlement with George Floyd's family
George Floyd's family filed a federal lawsuit in July against the city of Minneapolis and the four officers accused in his death.
MINNEAPOLIS — The city of Minneapolis has reached a $27 million settlement with George Floyd's family just weeks before the trial is scheduled to begin for the former officer charged with murder in his death.
The City Council unanimously approved the settlement Friday after adding the matter to its agenda for a closed session. The settlement includes a $500,000 contribution from Floyd's family to the community at the intersection of 38th and Chicago Avenue — now widely known as George Floyd Square.
"I hope that today will center the voices of the family and anything that they would like to share," Council President Lisa Bender said. "But I do want to, on behalf of the entire City Council, offer my deepest condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends and all of our community who are mourning his loss."
Benjamin Crump and other attorneys representing Floyd's family members held a news conference Friday afternoon where they were joined by Mayor Jacob Frey and City Council members.
Crump said it was the largest pretrial civil rights settlement ever, and "sends a powerful message that Black lives do matter and police brutality against people of color must end."

Anderson Cooper Says Donald Trump Can Have Vaccine Credit On One Damning Condition
CNN’s Anderson Cooper acknowledged Friday that ex-President Donald Trump “certainly deserves” some credit for his administration’s fast-tracking of the COVID-19 vaccine via Operation Warp Speed.
But Cooper argued that “if the former president wants any credit for that, which he certainly deserves, he also has to accept responsibility for the failures of his administration, which were many on testing, prevention, leadership, which contributed to the sickening death toll.”
The irony was that had Trump handled the pandemic successfully, he would “likely have won reelection in a landslide,” said Cooper. But “instead he made recognizing the very existence of a killer virus a test of political loyalty.”
Trump turned his own hospitalization from the coronavirus into “another chance to teach all the wrong lessons,” Cooper continued, which without a vaccine “were lessons in how to get sick and possibly die.”
“Think about that. Without a vaccine, modeling safe behavior is all you can do. Yet he did the opposite. All the time. And reveled in it,” Cooper concluded.

Fauci Blames Trump Administration's 'Mixed Messages' For Unimaginable COVID-19 Toll
Infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday he would have been “shocked” a year ago by the astronomical 530,000 American lives now lost to COVID-19. He blamed unnecessary deaths on the dangerous political “divisiveness” in the nation and “mixed messages” from the Trump administration.
Fauci warned at a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing a year ago that the COVID-19 situation would get “much worse” before it improved — but he had no idea how dire it would become, he told Savannah Guthrie on NBC’s “Today” show.
“It was March 11, 2020, I said that, but I did not in my mind think that ‘much worse’ was going to be 525,000 deaths,” Fauci revealed. Had he known the toll a year ago, it “would have shocked me completely,” he added.
Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, blamed the overwhelming death toll on “divisiveness in our country” and “mixed messages” from Washington, he added, without specifically naming Donald Trump.
Biden has consistently recommended wearing masks, social distancing and exercising caution before reopening businesses.
“Even simple, commonsense public health measures took on a political connotation,” Fauci said. “If you wanted to wear a mask, you were on this side. If you wanted to stay in and avoid congregate settings, you were on this side. It wasn’t a pure public health approach. It was really very much influenced by the divisiveness that we had in this country.”
The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic a year ago Thursday. Two weeks before that, Trump gloated that the U.S. was doing a “pretty good job” against the spread of COVID-19 and that the 15 reported cases in the nation would quickly be “down to close to zero.”
He declared the following day that “like a miracle, it will disappear.”
Trump repeatedly pushed for businesses and schools to fully open as the pandemic raged and treated health precautions with disdain, including wearing masks and social distancing.
After Trump contracted COVID-19 and survived after receiving the highest quality health care — unaffordable and inaccessible for most of the public — he ripped off his mask upon returning to the White House early last October. He told Americans not to “be afraid” of COVID-19.
“You’re going to beat it,” he added. That day, the U.S. recorded 210,000 COVID-19 deaths, less than half of what the death toll would be four months later
Though the U.S. has only 4% of the world’s population, it has 20% of the globe’s COVID-19 deaths.
Fauci said that he and other health officials are concerned about another possible coronavirus surge as the “virus is still very much circulating in the community.” Again, political infighting threatens to fuel such a surge as some states are too quickly reversing their safety restrictions — against the advice of health experts.
Though Fauci is beginning to see “light at the end of the tunnel” with increasing vaccinations and a plateau in cases, we still have to “keep putting our foot to the pedal when it comes to public health measures,” he said. Fauci warned that people still need to be careful and, “at a minimum,” wear masks.

Ron Johnson Says He Would Have Been 'Concerned' About Black Capitol Rioters
In an absolutely stunning statement, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) admitted in a radio interview that he wasn’t frightened by white insurrectionists’ attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 — but said he would have been “concerned” had they been Black.
Johnson accurately predicted that his racist statement to conservative radio host Joe Pags on Thursday would get him “into trouble.”
The senator noted that he has been criticized for previous remarks that he “never felt threatened” by the attack.
He added: “Now, had the tables been turned, Joe, and this’ll get me in trouble — had the tables been turned, and President Trump won the election, and those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and antifa protesters, I might have been a little concerned.”

Forget Dr. Seuss And Cancel Culture – The Real GOP Agenda Is Rolling Back Voting
WASHINGTON — Just weeks into an era of a new Democratic White House and Congress pushing through their priorities, Republicans appear to have settled on an agenda of their own.
No, not Dr. Seuss or “cancel culture” or breaking up Big Tech or any of the culture war topics that dominate their fundraising appeals and the Fox News evening programming, but the singular issue on which they seem to believe their future success will depend: making it harder for poorer people and communities to vote.
From Juneau, Alaska, to Tallahassee, Florida, and dozens of statehouses in between, Republicans are pushing legislation to cut early voting, eliminate ballot collection boxes, end “no-excuse” absentee voting and undo laws designed to make voting easier, particularly for voters who historically have not engaged in elections.
According to the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, there are already 253 such bills in 43 states and counting.
“We’re in the second great disenfranchisement in American history,” said David Schultz, a professor of election law at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, ranking our current times just below the Jim Crow years that followed the failure of Reconstruction.
The new term of art for the GOP’s efforts is “election integrity” — a phrase that dovetails with former President Donald Trump’s repeated lie that the Nov. 3 election had been “stolen” from him, which ultimately fueled the Jan. 6 violent insurrection at the Capitol.

However, Jennifer Weisselberg thinks it’s unlikely her ex-father-in-law will play ball, saying: “He has more feelings and adoration for Donald than for his wife... For Donald, it’s a business.
But for Allen it’s a love affair.” As an example, she recalled to Mayer being hit on by Trump in front of her then father-in-law—at a shivah for Allen’s deceased mother—and said with incredulity: “He didn’t stand up for me!” Jennifer Weisselberg also said that, at the same event to mourn the dead, Trump showed people photographs of naked women with him on a yacht.
Separately, Mayer also reported the first details of the whereabouts of Trump’s tax documents after they were provided to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in February. The hard drive is believed to be in an incredibly high-security chamber within the Louis J. Lefkowitz State Office Building. The chamber is reported to be sealed by bank-vault-style doors, and lined with copper foil to stop remote tampering attempts.
Meanwhile, CNN reported Friday that Trump’s time in the White House has given New York prosecutors an possible boost for any case against Trump. Prosecutors have reportedly discussed using a section of New York criminal procedure that allows for the extension of the statute of limitations if a defendant has been out of state “continuously,” as Trump has been since he took office in 2017. According to CNN, prosecutors think that could afford them more time to investigate Trump’s business dealings.
However, while the investigation is heating up, there is clearly still a lot of work to do before Vance departs office in nine months—and there’s still a possibility that the investigation will be closed with no charges.
Preet Bharara, the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, told The New Yorker: “All the signals indicate that there’s a belief on the part of that office that there’s a good chance of a charge... [But] no one should be under the illusion that this is easy or a slam-dunk case.”

'Gonna be sore:' La. troopers boasted of beating Black man
Louisiana State Police troopers joked in a group text about beating a Black man after a high-speed chase last year, saying the “whoopin” would give the man “nightmares for a long time,” according to new court filings.
“He gonna be sore tomorrow for sure,” Trooper Jacob Brown, who was charged in the case and resigned Wednesday, texted three of his colleagues. “Warms my heart knowing we could educate that young man.”
The May arrest of 29-year-old Antonio Harris — who authorities say was beaten by troopers even after he “immediately surrendered" — bears a strong resemblance to the State Police pursuit a year earlier that ended in the still-unexplained death of another Black motorist, Ronald Greene.
Greene's death was captured on body-worn camera footage the agency refuses to release and remains the subject of a federal civil rights investigation.
Brown, 30, who faces charges in two other excessive-force cases, had pulled Harris over for a minor traffic violation on Interstate 20 in Richland Parish when Harris reentered his vehicle and fled, State Police said.
The ensuing chase spanned 29 miles (47 kilometers), reached speeds of 150 mph (240 km/h) and ended only after deputy sheriffs deployed a “tire deflation device” that caused Harris to drive into a ditch, the court records show.
An internal investigation found the responding troopers, who are white, attacked Harris even though he had surrendered and “laid face down (prone) on the ground and extended his arms away from his body and his legs spread apart.”
The first arriving trooper, Dakota DeMoss, “delivered a knee strike” to Harris and slapped him in the face with an open palm before powering off his body-worn camera, the court records show. DeMoss, 28, also initiated Greene’s arrest in May 2019, though State Police have not provided any details about his involvement.
Another trooper, George Harper, 26, punched Harris in the head several times with a fist “reinforced" by a flashlight and threatened to “punish” Harris, while Brown pulled the man's hair.
“At no time did Harris resist arrest,” the State Police internal investigation concluded.
The troopers produced “wholly untrue” reports saying Harris was resisting and continuing to flee, the filings say, and they sought to conceal from investigators that there was bodycam video. They also exchanged 14 text messages peppered with “lol” and “haha” responses in which they boasted about the beating and mocked Harris.
“BET he wont run from a full grown bear again,” Brown wrote.
“Bet he don't even cross into LA anymore,” DeMoss responded, who earlier jeered that Harris was “still digesting that ass whoopin.”
“He gonna spread the word that's for damn sure,” Harper texted back.

‘Granny shouldn’t be out here’: Maskless spring breakers flout South Beach COVID rules
With a black mask pulled under his chin, 22-year-old Ace Beck weaved through spring breakers on busy Ocean Drive without any concern for catching COVID-19 — or unwittingly passing it on to somebody else.
The Alabama A&M junior, who spent Thursday afternoon in Miami Beach having fun and flirting with girls, said the big crowds didn’t worry him. For one, he said he believed the tropical climate in South Florida would keep the virus at bay. And he didn’t expect to run into any medically vulnerable seniors during spring break on South Beach.
“There’s no way that a girl can cough and I get it, it’s too hot,” Beck said, later adding: “Granny shouldn’t be out here anyways. It’s too many people.”
Just as public health officials and city leaders feared, South Beach has become inundated with bare-faced, care-free spring breakers over the last month. The virus is still spreading, but young party-goers from all parts of the U.S. are mingling without observing social distancing, and mostly without masks.
That threatens to prolong the pandemic at a time when daily cases are gradually decreasing statewide and bigger sections of the population are getting vaccinated, said University of Florida infectious disease professor Dr. J. Glenn Morris, Jr.
On Friday, the Florida Department of Health reported 5,214 new COVID-19 cases statewide, about one in five coming from Miami-Dade County.
“We are getting closer to the end,” Morris told the Miami Herald. “Now is not the time to catch COVID.”
