Remember how gushingly happy he was after leaving the Yankees?

Was just about to post this as well. From the Yankees to the "Dirty Birds", and he's now pushing 30. Just trying to keep the dream alive.

Frazier & Austin Meadows were high school rivals. There was a bit of a competition as to which one would be drafted first. I think Frazier went just before Meadows, who is also out of the game now.

I did not know about the high school rivalry. And I thought Meadows was still lurking with the Tigers, but I see he is not. He's another guy who had some mental health issues.

Frazier bulked up quite a bit by the time he made it to MLB. Here he is playing rookie league ball in AZ...

I wonder what would difference it would have made had he stayed lithe, like a Robin Yount type.

It used to be verboten to lift weights if you played baseball.

All you could hope for was round shoulders from dribbling and rebounding.

I remember when the Yanks traded Andrew Miller to Cleveland they had their choice of either Frazier or Bradley Zimmer in return. I was happy they chose Frazier, but neither lived up to their dreaded "potential" and are both out of baseball.

I played high school baseball and basketball, and our coaches practically threatened to kick you off the team if they caught you lifting weights. Not that it was that common back then. In his book "The Long Season" pitcher Jim Brosnan of the Cardinals said pretty much the same thing applied in the majors back in 1960. There was concern about being "muscle bound."

My oldest grandson went to college on a baseball scholarship. Daily weight training was mandatory. Injured himself doing so, and was out of baseball within a year.

When I think of the builds of Ernie Banks, Henry Aaron, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Dave Kingman - even Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle - those guys hit the ball as far and as often as anyone and none appeared to be devotees of weight training. Now, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are concentrating more on flexibility than bulking up. Even Mark McGwire in his rookie year was really thin - and hit 49 home runs.

I still think the Yankees ruined Frazier. They would not let the kid just be himself. Cut the hair and tone it down. Gardy should have retired or moved on but Boone had Gardy right on top off Frazier every misstep or slump. I was worried they would do the same thing to Dugo.
