The Splinter's most extended slump that year was 0 for 7. He only had three infield hits. He began the season with a broken bone in his foot, limiting him to pinch-hitting duty the first several weeks of the season (he would have been on the IL for a month today.) In 1941, sac flies were counted as outs. Which means he would have hit somewhere between .411 and .419 under subsequent rules. I can actually remember Williams's 1957 season. He turned 39 in August of that year. He hit .388, had a .526 OBP and an adjusted OPS+ of 233. No steroids for that skinny guy. I saw him with my own eyes, and I'm still not sure he really existed. .388 with a .526 OPB at age 39? Unreal. Only Bonds can compare. He was obviously on Slim-Fast, which got S&H green stamps for buying, and cashed them in for cigarettes...

Chris Davis is now 2 for his last 2 with 3 RBI, even he likes feasting on Red Sox pitching.

I watched some of that Baltimore-Boston game. Besides being obviously glad that Boston is still sputtering -- Porcello was horrible again, lucky to get by allowing three earned runs in four innings -- I was happy to see Davis break out of that mess. Jeez, I wouldn't even wish an oh-fer like that on a Red Sox player.
It was somewhat reminiscent of an even more torturous streak, the Mets' Anthony Young with his 27 straight losses in 1992-93. Young wasn't even that awful during the streak -- at one point during it, he converted 12 consecutive save opportunities and pitched 23 2/3 straight scoreless innings -- but simply had an amazing capacity to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Davis has set enough futility records for any one player. But unlike the unfortunate Anthony Young, who ended up working in a chemical plant and died from a brain tumor at the age of 51, he does get to laugh all the way to the bank.

DJ the Sneeze (LaMahiue) has a .432 batting average, which is currently second in all of baseball among qualifying hitters...

Baltimore crushed Boston today, 8-1. A home run for Chris Davis, the newest hot hitter in the AL. The Sox held Chris Sale out of this one so that he could pitch against the Yankees tomorrow. It didn't pan out well. The Orioles split four in Fenway, which I am sure was not part of Boston's plan.
Boston has not won any of its five series so far this year. And at least in the early going, Baltimore, while bad, has not looked like the historically bad team it was supposed to be. They lost 115 last year and were supposed to be even worse this year. So far they look about like the Yankees and the Red Sox.
Catcher Christian Vazquez started at second for Boston. That doesn't sound like something that was part of Boston's strategy going into the season. This team started 17-2 last year. The best they can be after the same number of games this year is 8-11, which they can only do if they sweep the two game series from the Yankees, which they will not.

David Robertson goes on the IL with elbow issues. You can take the Yankee out of New York, but you can't stop him from getting injured.

David Robertson goes on the IL with elbow issues. You can take the Yankee out of New York, but you can't stop him from getting injured. Robertson has been amazingly consistent and durable in his career...until now. How unfortunate for him to finally succumb to the typical human frailties that the majority of those in his craft now seem to suffer. I’ve always liked him, and rued his first departure from NY, but being a realist I wasn’t all that upset that the Yankees let the chance to sign him this winter bypass them...

Seriously, who thought Yelich would be this good? Well... I wanted him instead of Stanton. I was always slobbering at the idea of getting Stanton when he was younger, but when it came right down to it, I wanted the younger Yelich because of Stanton’s health history and Yelich’s athleticism. This good? Nah, I guess not. But I saw a bunch of potential there...
