Rays hold the A's to 3 hits over 10 innings and still lose - thanks Rays.

Cessa is becoming the master of the three inning Save. He's a modern day Goose Gossage.

I'd say that's probably Voit's ceiling.. I wouldn't count on him to reach it though. He's a career 288/370/460 hitter in the minors. It'd be nice if we can have some sort of Voit/Bird platoon playing the hot hand.. but I'd still like to get something of a more known commodity... 1B has been an unknown way too long with this team. Even with Tex.. we didn't really KNOW what Tex we were gonna get... he started off so slow every year.. It be nice to have a Mattingly/Tino/Giambi I still think Bird has more potential over a full season, if healthy, if not missing a ton of games. Bird in the playoffs last year got some key hits and I think thats still there. Voit is a career minor leaguer that I don't know can sustain this pace over a full season.

It’ll be interesting to see if our bats are springing back to life or if we’ve shot our wad for a week tonight... We better not have. I'm going to the game tomorrow!

Don’t know about Bird. I’m starting to wonder if a lot of his problems might be mental, which is a horrific place to be playing in NY. Voit plays the game with a lot of enthusiasm and the players seem to enjoy being around him. Plus Voit runs better and is the better fielding first baseman although that’s not saying much as Bird is awful defensively.

In his last ten starts, Tanaka has yielded a 2.09 ERA. This includes the six earned runs he gave up against Texas. More impressive is Tanaka's BAbip of .303 over that span, which is more than seventy points higher than the actual BA against. This indicates that Tanaka has been rather unlucky during those ten starts...soft contact, infield hits, bloops, and grounders finding holes more often than expected. Right now, Tanaka's command is superb. For those who prefer pitching over throwing, he has been pleasure to watch.

Tanaka has certainly made some sort of transformation as a pitcher...
