Boy howdy. Mr. Smith could sling mud from the outfield...

So, I checked. Smith was 30/11 in 1971 and never stole more than 22... This is why players get called “greats” after they retire from good careers. We tend to amplify our memories of them... .855 OPS for his 17 year career - just looked it up - was actually better than I remembered.

It's annoying how the Yanks best relievers continue to struggle at Fenway.

Best defensive RF I ever saw, and I hate to say it... Dwight Evans. Built his D around the most amazing OF arm imaginable. Clemente is 2nd. Though he was much more exciting to watch. He had a great gun, too... but that golden arm of Dwight Evans was the kind that would make your jaw drop, followed by falling out of your chair. Yes. Noticeably more powerful than Judge’s arm...which is not easy...When you take it pound for pound even more amazing...

Stupid Pearce! [img src="//storage.proboards.com/6828121/images/gszgVuvxUtZEFrgJSkis.gif" alt=" " class="smile"] I've grown to hate him. I have to admire him. He went from everyone’s favorite discard (including Cashman’s) to a useful player. Heck, he even played 2nd base for the Orioles for about a week at one point a couple of years back as they tried to find room for his bat vs. LHP... One of those guys I would say I love to hate.

Health was his most difficult skill after about age 28 or so. I think he only had two seasons after that point where he played in over 140 games. Fearsome switch hitter...Had his last really nice year with the Dodgers at I think, 32... Rate stats were really good, and a 137 OPS + is naught to sneeze at...

Correcting myself: Smith was every bit as good the next season , at 33. He played in 20 fewer games than the previous year, making it a bit less noticeable. Again. health. The hardest skill for some...
