I liked Harrison a couple of years ago, but it appears he peaked early, and the peak was brief. His career track is as steep as one of the Grsnd Tetons, as he was a .315 hitter with a +133 OPS about four years ago, but dropped quickly back to average performance.
The one plus is that he can play 2nd, 3rd, and the two OF corners. The problems are the he bats right handed, and he’s never played 1B. It seems like any more, if you want to be a Yankees utility player, you almost have to play first base...
Darn, I miss Giambi. I miss Martinez. I miss Mattingly...I’m almost starting to miss Lyle Overbay...almost... (:

On the other hand, I read that there's been some discussion of shipping Sonny Gray (+?) to Texas for Jurickson Profar. To me, that would be a far more intriguing turn of events. Profar might actually have a great future. He was, for the first time, solid at the plate in 2018. He'd be a great get and would open up a myriad possibilities.

It’s been rumored that Cashman has been after Profar for years. If we could get him for Gray (obviously, plus a prospect or two), that would be a great get...Twenty HR last season, and a switch hitter that can play just about anywhere..,including fill in for Didi? I’m in!!!

I almost hate to give up on him so quickly to be honest, but I understand the risk of going forward and basing his and the team’s future on hope. It will be interesting to see the return we get for him, and to see if another piece has to go with him. Another note on Profar..,yes. He can play first base... (:

As Yogi would have said, it’s 90% half mental. I think the stadium has him. Once the jeers start in Yankee Stadium that is a very impatient crowd...
The sad thing is that I believe that if he could just get over the hump and have about three good starts in a row he’d win the crowd back quickly. What’s happened now is that the first batter he falls behind the jeers start because of his rep for nibbling... and he tenses up, losing his command and concentration in the process...

Agree, Gray will probably shine away fro NY, but Texas will want a lot more than him for Profar. Wish we could dump Bird on them to sweeten the pot.

I’m so afraid Bird is going to have “that season” we’ve been waiting for as soon as we give up on him. But if we keep him, I’m afraid he’ll keep scuffling...

What season would that be, inger? The only reason he’s still on the roster is because he’s a left handed hitter with some power in the most left handed friendly park in baseball. He’s not a good fielder and there were numerous inferences about his frame of mind. Some guys just can’t play in NY and some guys that do play there are over hyped. It looks like he might be that rare combination of both while I think Gray just needs a change of scenery. I would give up on Bird before Gray.

I also think that Hal won’t break the bank to win a championship. Better to contend and stay below the tax penalty than to roll the dice and spend. POs are a crap shoot and if you make the POs every year, eventually you hit the jackpot. The problem is that the year you don’t make it with a $199 million budget you look stupid.

Does anyone recall Brian Cashman as bluntly and transparently obvious about trading any player, as with Sonny Gray? The home and away splits tell the ugly story, and the Yankees appear to have said "Uncle" to further attempts to mitigate Gray's "head mechanics" regarding pitching in the Bronx.
As for Profar, he had a .712 OPS on the road and an .874 OPS at the friendly confines at Arlington, Texas. Though he is versatile, his defense occasionally wilts at crucial moments. Once considered an untouchable prospect, he's only recently found regular playing time on a bad Rangers team. He's not a virtual certainty for me.

Maybe the Yanks should try to get creative and only have Gray pitch away. Have another SP who would fill in for him when his turn comes up at home.
Each of them would act as the long set up man when the other is starting.
Don't know if it has been done before (or if it is even a reasonable idea), but if he is really good on the road and terrible at home...

POs are a crap shoot and if you make the POs every year, eventually you hit the jackpot. The problem is that the year you don’t make it with a $199 million budget you look stupid. As a business, they had a great season while staying within the payroll limits. How much more revenue and profit would they make by winning a championship to justify the expense people think they should incur to go over the luxury tax threshold? Fans don't care about revenue and profit, but that's all the owner of the business cares about. I don't think Hal has ever picked up a baseball, let alone enjoy the sport. This could be a tomato processing plant or a fast food franchise to him. The fact that fans want to win a championship only matters if it affects their purchasing decisions as customers when the team doesn't win. The current roster spending only $190,000,000 was extremely entertaining and compelled fans to show up to the tune of the second best attendance in baseball last season. I don't see people spending their money elsewhere just because they haven't won a championship yet. Keep in mind also, their TV contract doesn't come up for renegotiation until something like 2040. Otherwise that would be a compelling reason, but that revenue is locked and loaded through the rest of Hal's professional life.

The only reason he’s still on the roster is because he’s a left handed hitter with some power in the most left handed friendly park in baseball. No, Ji-Man Choi is a left handed hitter with some power. Greg Bird just hasn't been healthy...ever. But, in 570 odd, inconsistent, career MLB at bats he has 31 homers, 32 doubles, and a triple. Bird has prodigious power...when right. As for his mental makeup, his best performances were down the stretch in 2015 and in the playoffs of 2017. Remember that home run against Cleveland? With the nasty lefty Miller pitching no less. He's still on the team for the exact reason Inger identified. Bird may just need one full, healthy, spring training - which he has never had - before his wings are clipped. Or, unless the Yankees land an established all-star bat to play first. I'd hate to see Boston with a healthy Bird, peppering the Green Monster with doubles, then launching blue darters into the second deck at Yankee Stadium. One more chance won't doom the franchise.
