Reinforcing with a bit of data, as in I don’t think winning 100 games again is possible with the same group.

He has a point. Either Harper or Machado could easily end up looking like Ellsbury before a 10 year $300m contract is over.

Ten years is way to long to count on someone's performance in a major sport...And to add to that, the player gets an "opt-out" so if he continues to perform, he can still take a bundle of cash and leave. The team? If the player craps the bed, the team has no escape...This team doesn't need another Maserati in the parking lot...

I read speculation that Arizona might move Goldschmidtt, but it's hard to believe they'd be in tear down mode. They weren't far back last year. Also Joey Votto. That would piss the fans off in Cincy, and his best is surely behind him...We just have to wait and see what Cashman is working on. Surely there are options that won't take a ten year commitment...and for a player that DOES hustle would be nice...(anti Machado comment, not aimed at Harper)...

Guys, I never suggested the Yankees wouldn't win their share of games. I was referring to winning something besides the WC, but hey, if folks are just happy to be contending then by all means, keep slugging home runs, whiffing and being 11t in the league in defence. Maybe its a crapshoot and we get lucky along the way. Every PO team in the AL was better in the field than us. We also had the least number of hits and doubles and lowest batting average of any of the PO teams despite leading in homers. Boston led the Yankees in every offensive category except home runs, so its not like we can say that its fine to boot the ball around because we are so superior with the bats. I just think its unrealistic to think the team can win a championship with so many holes. Once again I agree with you = They set records for HR's hit but WATCHED the WS from their Man Caves.
You hit the Nail on its Head.
Lowest Hits, Doubles, BA. of the Play-Off Teams.
Unless WE make some major changes this Off-Season (see my Part I Plan) AT BEST, we might, might, might, be lucky to win as many games as we did in 2018.
And BRINGING BACK CC & Gardner AND Boone, ARE NOT MAJOR CHANGES!!!
Signing Harper or 'No Hustle' is just bringing ________________(fill-in-the Blank; but not a WS); instead, just wasted $$$ and might bring us another Tex, Ellsbury etc. type.
Now I have upset Tequila...

Hal makes an excellent point about context and "where did this come from", etc...Words, taken in a vacuum, can mean something else when you build the conversation from both sides and consider tone of voice, facial expression, accusations, etc...It was still a dumbass thing for a MLB player to lay out there, but players aren't expected to be geniuses...right? Although I would add that saying what he said when he said it for many reasons may drop Machado into the cretin category...I suppose if a cretin can be trained to play good baseball, no one cares...

Steinbrenner on Machado comments: 'That ain't going to sell'
Flush with cash, the New York Yankees may take a run at Manny Machado. But first, the slugging infielder would have some explaining to do. Arriving in Atlanta for two days of owners meetings at a hotel next to the Braves' SunTrust Park, Hal Steinbrenner discussed the state of a team that has one of baseball's most dynamic young rosters but came up short in the playoffs the last two seasons. The Yankees owner has plenty of money to spend after coming in under the luxury tax threshold last season for the first time since the penalty took effect in 2003. While the top priority is starting pitching, New York is also mentioned as a contender for one of the winter's biggest free-agent prizes. Machado is a dynamic player but comes with plenty of baggage, including the reputation as a dirty player and his admission that he's "not the type of player that's going to be Johnny Hustle " after he jogged out a groundball during the NL Championship Series. "Certainly, those comments are troubling," Steinbrenner said during a meeting with a small group of reporters in the hotel lobby. He quickly added that it would be the job of general manager Brian Cashman to determine whether the comments would disqualify the Yankees from pursuing such a player. New York needs a shortstop for at least the first half of 2019 after Didi Gregorius blew out his throwing elbow in Game 2 of the AL Division series , leading to Tommy John reconstructive surgery. "If we're interested in any player, we sit down with them face to face with their agent and ask them, 'Where did this come from? What context was around the entire interview? What point were you trying to make? How do you justify it?'" Steinbrenner said. "Because that ain't going to sell where we play baseball."

The first "hustle clause" is born in a 350 million dollar contract....

The voice of the Yankees has spoken: “The feeing I get....probably”. This is what now qualifies as “breaking news”. Breaking story of the day for Thursday 11/15/2018 from Michael Kay:Michael Kay announces that nothing has happened yet...Advise to stay tuned in case something does happen. Meanwhile, Machado was seen yesterday in an unnamed city eating a Philadelphia-Style Cheesesteak, this one day after he was seen in the same city eating a New York Style Pizza. This is indeed a tense time, with concerns mounting that Machado may have gained as much as a pound due to his poor dietary choices this week. This reporter attempted to get in to see Hank Steinbrenner today for comment but was told that Mr. Steinbrenner's rubber room is not accessible to reporters during hot stove league season... Further reports are that Bryce Harper and Dallas Kuechel were both seen speaking with the same barber for an estimate on having their beards shaved off and packaged for sale on E-Bay...It is not yet known if each will sell their beard individually or if they will be packaged together... But repeat: Nothing has happened today, and we have no idea at this point if anything will, but we think...maybe...possibly...something could...I mean, I get the feeling here that probably, Machado just wanted one more cheesesteak before moving on from having lived close enough to Philly to get the product regularly and crossing Philadelphia off his list...
