A great Masters indeed. Of course, I love it every year so my opinion probably isn't worth much. But it was exciting with the crowded leaderboard. Tiger looked like he turned back the clock 15 years. I do not think I have ever seen him look more genuinely joyous in victory. I think the years in the wilderness changed him and made him more appreciative of what he has. He does not seem like the entitled wunderkind who barely noticed the gallery like he often did in his glory days.
He looked really great, like a guy who could very plausibly have more major wins in his future. If this victory puts him back to where he had the mental edge over every other competitor -- if a new generation of golfers gets acclimated to expecting him to win no matter what they do -- he could yet catch Jack.
Hard to think that could happen at age 43, but it no longer seems impossible. This one was right up there with Jack in 86.

Anytime Tiger Woods makes another landmark, my thoughts go to Jack Nicklaus, the golfer who was the bright new star when I began watching golf seriously. I mean, Arnie was already the established peoples choice -- rightly so -- and Jack was this fat "privileged" aloof newcomer who was messing up everything. The public's perception of him justifiably changed dramatically as his career progressed, but he was by no means a universal fan favorite at the start.
Anyway, one of my favorite Nicklaus statistics is that while every golf fan knows that he won 18 majors, nearly as amazing is that he was runner-up in 19 other majors. Thirty seven times either first or second. Not too shabby.

His longest 1-0 win was an 18-inning affair...

Went to the tourney with my dad yesterday. A lot of fun. Hit my bet on Brooskie (had him and DJ so would have won either way). Koepka has officially become an all time great.

If you’re going to do anything that will make you famous, this kind of stuff goes along with it. Humans are not kind to each other...Seems Koepka was energized by it. That’s the way you have to be to thrive under stress. Bravo for him...And in the end, those fans hurt Johnson as much as they did Koepka...

Only Tiger and Jack had more major victories than Koepka before the age of 30, so he's in good company. Brooks is also one of only seven golfers in the Masters era to win a major in at least three consecutive years. Sounds like you saw them playing under pretty tough conditions. DJ is now in a select group to be a runner-up in all four majors.

What a collapse that would have been, glad Brooks doesnt have that blot on his record.

Well, Spieth is in the mix. And Martin Kaymer tied for the lead. That guy went completely off my radar. It doesn't seem that long ago that he was world number one, but it's been five years since his last win, when he ran away with the US Open at Pinehurst.

Just spent a few days down in Birmingham playing some courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge). Has anyone ever golfed down there and played any of the The Trail? Courses were beautiful.

Courses were beautiful. Lush country, but the folk down thar shoor talk funny, don’t thay?... I have never seen that stretch of four states from Georgia to Louisiana, also including Alabammy, and Mississippi. I also imagined very green and lush, which be great for golf. The people I’ve met from those areas usually seemed mannerly and nice, also particularly fond of the area. A little banjo-pickin’ In the hills never hurt anyone (don’t ask Ned Beatty). Glad you had a nice trip, michcuse...

Courses were beautiful. I've been to Birmingham -- main thing I remember is the giant statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of metal work -- his rear end was pointed toward Tennessee, supposedly that's how you got directions. But never golfed there. Robert Trent Jones was one busy guy. Glad your great golf odyssey continues. That is a really cool quest.
