Yea, I don't think that's happening unfortunately. See ya Bird, hopefully you'll work your way up to the big leagues again this year. Or if Voit continues to rake, see ya for good. I don’t think it is unfortunate. Both Bird and Voit are one dimensional players. And a platoon doesn’t make sense for them. You can’t carry two guys like that. Bird’s best shot at being a starting 1B is either that Voit fails (and Voit will get a long leash since Cashman’s team went out of their way to acquire him and he succeeded after they did) or to go to SWB, crush the ball, and get traded. Well it depends. If they both play to their potential (say .850 OPS, 30+ HR) I would rather go with them at 1B/DH and sit Gardner and have Stanton patrol LF. I'd sacrifice the outfield defense for the offensive boost.

That leaves one more spot, which belongs to Gardner because we need a capable backup CF. If we could go with a 12-Man pitching staff, then I could live with 2 1B/DHs...

The scenario doesn't work with carrying a 13 man pitching staff.

It wouldnt be a platoon. It would have to be that they both played so well in the Spring that they end up 1B/DH with Stanton in Left and Gardy rotating in randomly. Was probably always a long shot even in that scenario.

One thing for certain is that as fans we’ve been plenty patient with Bird. It’s not his fault that he’s been banged up so much, but much about success or failure in life has to do with timing and persistence. If he winds up demoted and ultimately traded his story will continue, albeit in another city...and he’ll either succeed or fail based on his persistence and how well his body responds to physical activity...
So no. It’s really not a “shame”. It just is...

Despite the run scored against him, German is looking great. The Yankees defense let him down by letting Mahtook run amok...
I liked German last year despite his struggles. He’s been there, and if he learned from it, maybe this will be his chance to show what he can do. He’s sure not afraid to use his off-speed stuff...

With Stanton's history with hamstring injuries, the Yanks would have to be careful with how many games he plays in LF, he's going have to see his share of DH time. It appears the three bench players at the start of the season will be Romine, DJ & Wade, a backup catcher and two guys that can play all over the field.

Let’s hope the Yanks are using this game to break in new catcher’s mitts... (:
