I don’t think it is unfortunate. Both Bird and Voit are one dimensional players. And a platoon doesn’t make sense for them. You can’t carry two guys like that. Bird’s best shot at being a starting 1B is either that Voit fails (and Voit will get a long leash since Cashman’s team went out of their way to acquire him and he succeeded after they did) or to go to SWB, crush the ball, and get traded. Well it depends. If they both play to their potential (say .850 OPS, 30+ HR) I would rather go with them at 1B/DH and sit Gardner and have Stanton patrol LF. I'd sacrifice the outfield defense for the offensive boost. If you play Stanton every day in the OF, I would expect him not to last the season. And Stanton > Bird So I don’t love that strategy.

It wouldnt be a platoon. It would have to be that they both played so well in the Spring that they end up 1B/DH with Stanton in Left and Gardy rotating in randomly. Was probably always a long shot even in that scenario. I get that. I wouldn’t do it.

Sadly, I think every day Stanton plays MLB he’s a hammy waiting to happen. He’s decent in the field, but every game out there exponentially increases his chance of being injured even more than batting and running the bases as a DH.
How many games should he play in the OF where we can feel safe?
20? 40? 50? 80? 100?
I’d pick 40, and stretch it to 50 only if the need arose to avoid calling someone like Lipka up...And in a better world, he’d just be the DH...

It wouldn't be an everyday thing. Just another optional lineup they could use. Anyways, its not happening so might as well move on from the idea.

I’ve also thought how nice it would be if he or Voit could at least play a semi-Decent outfield, too... just enough to back up...watching Voit jiggle as he trotted of the field after foolishly trying to stretch a single into a double last night showed just how much tonnage he’s carrying on that upper body...

Have people already forgotten what Gary Sanchez can do with the bat? Why would we want anyone else as catcher?

Have people already forgotten what Gary Sanchez can do with the bat? Why would we want anyone else as catcher? Bird was a catcher. If he were still a catcher, he'd have versatility that he now lacks, and would help create a more definite place for him on the roster. That's all.

Have people already forgotten what Gary Sanchez can do with the bat? Why would we want anyone else as catcher? I’m sure he meant as a BUC...But I like Romine in that role. He’s reliable defensively, and for sitting a lot he does okay with the bat...Last year he also showed some of the pop in MLB that he showed in the minors that had me hopeful he could someday hit 15-20 HR... His biggest fault is swinging at way too many pitches... Always had, though he showed improvement early last season, which is part of why he started off so well...
