Great start for Paxton. Down 3-0 before retiring anybody.

I'm too young to remember when pre-scheduled doubleheaders were a thing. As teams had less financial need to play doubleheaders, they started to die out in the late 60s and into the 70s. The Mariners in 1983 were the first team ever to not schedule a doubleheader. It didn't take long for the other teams to catch up. An advantage of doubleheaders is that they do allow more off-days for the players. Typically doubleheaders drew larger crowds than two single games would draw. They were especially common on Sundays. I went to hundreds of these as a kid. Loved them. That's a lot of baseball to watch live in one day. I don't think I have the stamina.

Game one on a Sunday would start at 1 PM, and we would typically be done with the second game by around 5:30, maybe 6 PM. Twi-night doubleheaders, which were also common, would start at 5:30 and be over by 10 PM. People often don't realize how much less time games took back in the 1960s. Night games started at 8:05 and were over no later than they are today. Fewer pitching changes, no thought of driving up pitch counts, less time between pitches, fewer mound meetings -- it all contributed.

Johnny McEnroe in the stands! Answer the question! Jerk!
Early in my career I worked with a guy named Bill Clothier. Heir to a department store fortune, very distinguished old-school gentleman. A kind, classy, generous man. He is in the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport mostly for his years running the amateur tournament at Wimbledon. He didn't have a bad word to say about anyone. Until he had to deal first with John, and later Patrick, McEnroe. He said they were the crudest tennis players he worked with in over 40 years of involvement with amateur tennis. He said at that point he knew he had to get out of the game. And he had no problem with a guy like Jimmy Connors. I always found McEnroe entertaining, but after listening to some of Bill's stories, it did make it tougher to be a fan. Just one guy's story, of course, and I am sure you could find contrary stories.

4-0 we are having a rough time finding the strike zone. Unless we get a dp here it will be worse as there are men at the corner with one out. Tampa is winning early.
