The YES crew mentioned that this is the 40th anniversary of Ron Guidry striking out 18, throwing 138 pitches. We've lost something that such a performance is no longer possible. And amazingly enough, Guidry was able to pitch for many more years. But not forever... ):

I think the difference is the weird angles they throw at now. It puts pressure on the arm that pitchers did not face in Ron's era.

The Pirates really kept Tampa Bay in the race with that trade that got them Chris Archer in return for Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow. Stupid Pirates. Also gave Houston Gerrit Cole. Yeah, if they just quit making trades, the Yankees would be sitting pretty.

But the force is not the key. Its the angle and the impact that has on the muscles and tendons. Lots of people threw really hard in the past, there were a lot fewer injuries. An alternative explanation is players are becoming physically weaker over time...

Lots of people threw really hard in the past, there were a lot fewer injuries. An alternative explanation is players are becoming physically weaker over time... When I was nine or ten years old, if I couldn’t get in a game I could wear out a lineup of people that wanted to play catch. Next! Step right up, keep ‘em comin’, folks. Then, when no one was left, I threw enough rubber balls against our landlord’s garage door that I wore a hole in it. When he’d Bitch about the noise after he got back from work, I’d go throw the ball against the wall of the supermarket next door. Now, if a ten year old throws the ball ten times the parents are afraid he’ll throw his arm out before he gets that big contract that’s going to put the family on easy street. That’s what changed. There have been sidewinders and underhanded in baseball since as far back as I recall. It just doesn’t tell you that on their Strat-O-Matic card...

A bad Yankee-Pirate trade had the Yanks sending Doug Drabek and Brian Fischer to Pittsburgh for Pat Clements and Cecilio Guante and somebody whose name I am not recalling. Drabek won a Cy Young and 92 games for Pittsburgh.
