Hello lads -- checking in from Dakar, Senegal, where I've been hanging out lately. The Wifi isn't reliable here, but I've been keeping up with the Yanks pretty well. Glad to see Sevy's name back in the boxscore!! I enjoy keeping up through you guys. Tomorrow we head to Bamako, Mali, another tourist hotspot (actually it's on the State Department "do not travel" list, so we booked our tickets immediately), but we have friends there, so no worries. Anyway, I really enjoy being able to follow along here, even though sometimes it is hard to send stuff out from here. I tried earlier and it didn't work. Hope this one makes it! You are becoming my hero, Pipps!

I know we won’t see it, but I’d use CC as a LOOGY first... I know he's a veteran and a team leader but I don't trust CC in any role in the playoffs unfortunately. I hope he doesn't cost us. Kaybli....say it ain't so...I'm going to have to give you the following!

You trust CC and his 27 HRs allowed in 103.2 IP? You trust the .264/.329/.520 line against him? You trust that achy knee? I'm sorry Rizz I can't just put the blinders on and pretend he's going to pitch well in the playoffs out of the blue.

He is still tough on lefties, and he is still effective early. I think he can come in to get a tough lefty or he can be an opener for one or two innings.

CC has held lefties to a .198 BA, but the problem is that when he fails, it sails. About a homer every ten at bats (vs. lefties).
His best inning has been the 3rd, with a 2.57 ERA. The problem is getting him to his third inning without having him pitch the first two, which have been about average in efficacy.
Suggestion: Warm him up a really, really, REALLY long time...

I would not trust the second inning splits without also reviewing the home/away splits, which are stark. We know his problem is seldom the first time though the line up or his first 25 pitches. If he is healthy, there is no chance Boone leaves him off the 25 man roster. That doesn’t mean he’s a starter, though. An opener is more like it, inning by inning, and batter by batter after the first time through the order. That being said, if Paxton, Tanaka, Severino, and German do their jobs. Sabathia will not see an opportunity to open.

To me, the more useful and likely successful role is also the one that is likely the more respectful role, too. That’s the LOOGY role. If he opens, and does well, but gets pulled at the first sign of trouble, that seems much more negative than bringing him in to get one or two key LHH out...

Great win!! The time difference meant I couldn't follow live, but reading the comments is a great way to feel like I caught the tempo of the game.
Severino -- wow!
