It's hard to believe still that Tony Gwynn is no longer living. A few remarkable facts:
Vs. Greg Maddox, Gwynn hit .415/.476/.521. In 107 PA against Maddox, Gwynn never struck out Vs. John Smoltz, Gwynn hit .444/.467/.694 in 75 PA against Smoltz. He did strike out once against Smoltz
The only pitcher that Gwynn hit more than 2 HR against was Tom Browning, who served up 4 to him. The free-swinging Gwynn took more BB vs. Greg Maddux than any other pitcher, 11. He also had the most ABs vs. Maddux over any other pitcher and his 39 hits off Maddux were the most he racked up off anyone. Only 13 pitchers fanned Gwynn more than 5 times in his career. Nolan Ryan led the pack with 9 K's. There were 64 different pitchers that faced Gwynn at least one time and never got him out. The list is lead by Bret Prinz who allowed one hit and two walks to Gwynn in three PA Greg Maddox issued 7 IBBs to Gwynn in 107 PA. Second most IBB were issued by the late Tim Crews, who must have feared Gwynn greatly with 6 IBB in just 16 PA against. Only Steve Trout hit Gywnn with a pitch more than once, and he did it twice. Gwynn was hard to double up, even in his later years in the game. For some reason Tim Leary was able to coax him into 5 DP in just 29 PA Doug Brocail kept Gwynn hitless in 5 ABs. No one else did. Frank DiPino had Gwynn kryptonite, holding him to 1 for 20 Only two pitchers against whom Gwynn had at least 35 PA were able to hold him to a .20o average. They were Jose De Leon 97 for 35) and Denny Neagle (8 for 40). Gwynn hit .400 or better vs. 10 pitchers that he faced at least 35 times (and three more that he faced 34 times).

Meaningless but cool:
The AL and NL MVPs in 1994 were Frank Thomas and Jeff Jeff Bagwell. They were both born on May 27,1968...

Joey Gallo will enter tomorrow’s game with career totals of 79 HR, and 79 singles. When he hit his 50th, he was the first player in the game’s history to hit 50 HR before he hit his 50th single. He has 47 single st the point. Wondering which he’ll make it to 100 first???

He also has an insane 44.5% K rate based on career ABs. 😳 Uh, that’s Gallo, not Gwynn.

Was he a ute???
Fred Gwynn had a long and varied career. He was the most natural choice to play Herman Munster and he actually made that show work more than anyone else (Grandpa was a close second)...But that one line will live in infamy as the "moment" in his career...
That's Fred Gwynn, not Tony by the way. They weren't related... (:
Isn't it odd how a thread can suddenly wander into such a coincidence??? Gallo/Callo becomes Gwynn/Gwynn. Even I didn't see that one coming... (:
I read another good tidbit on Tony Gwynn yesterday, so I'll add it here. Tony Gwynn is the only player in MLB history to ever have a three RBI game in which he never reached base safely. He went 0 for 4, but knocked in a run with a sac fly and two runs on ground outs. Sort of strange when you realize how hard it is to get Tony Gwynn to go 0 for 4, and then he drives in three runs that day. When we look at Joey Gallo's K tendencies and then remember that Gwynn had several seasons during which he fanned fewer than twenty times. Then you look at that three RBI game and you realize that contact is indeed important. I wish there would be another Tony Gwynn...but somehow I doubt it...The guy didn't play in an era where people hit .400-.420. He played when people hit .300-.320, but he hit around .350 every year. There is a number...I think it's 1183. That's how many hitless AB you have to add to Gwynns lifetime batting line to lower his average to .2997, and that is still rounded up to .300...

I always think Puckett whenever I'm angry about some small inconvenience.

I always think Puckett whenever I'm angry about some small inconvenience. It’s a shame that Puckett’s legacy turned so ugly at the end... He was quite an unusual character when playing, then so tragic when his eyes betrayed him. And then...the rest of the story...
