Okay, now I see the color one was a painting. I couldn't bring myself to enlarge it at first and didn't notice.

Casey looks like a state trooper with those shades on.

Smokey Joe Wood in his Boston uniform. The Big Train, Walter Johnson, in 1938 with his daughters. This was eleven years after he retired from MLB.

Man, The Big Train's daughters look just like him. Somewhere out there on YouTube is a Senators broadcast from the early 1940s with Walter Johnson doing the play by play. I don't think such a laconic style would play well today.

Great photos of Smokey Joe and Casey. Thanks for posting them. Casey's glove is pretty much the same size as his hand.

BTW, that photo of Cobb sliding into third was actually a stolen base. Not, as I had assumed, a throw from the outfield. He must have been hung up in a steal attempt.

I once saw picture of Cobb trying to score, diving feet first into the catcher's chest. It looked like a wrestling move, the game has changed a bit since.

I think deadball era baseball would be fascinating to watch. Rough, aggressive, lots of emotion. The films that survive from that era tend to give little information. The cameras are too distant, and there was way too much footage of crowd scenes. The best film documentation of any early 20th century sport is boxing, which is naturally easier to film.

Imagine, hiding balls in the tall outfield grass as a cheat...”We’d like to review that play, Ump”...Heck, the uniforms were blousy enough to hide an extra ball in their shirt if they wanted to...

What a weird season to date. It’s almost as if the AL East has hired a scripter from the WWF. I can almost envision a point in the season where the Yankees are 30 games behind the Red Sox with 31 to go. An Injured Aaron Judge has been paralyzed in a hospital bed for three weeks when we see his finger begin to twitch, which eventually manifests itself in a whole-body shake and Judge rising from the bed in a zombie-like state and walks toward Yankee Stadium in a hospital gown.
He arrives at the park and picks up a baseball bat. Using the hitting machine he misses the first twenty pitches before beginning to pound HR after HR into the empty seats, then out of the park, breaking windshields and monuments all over the Bronx.
The game starts and Judge takes his position in RF, but doesn’t notice the evil JD Martinez climbing up to the second deck. Then positioning himself to deliver a drop-kick to Judge below.
Just as Martinez begins his dive several Yankees tap the umpires on the shoulder so they can’t see Judge dive into the stands and rip out several seats, which he uses to hit Martinez over the head on the way down!
The Yankees win 31 in a row while Boston loses 31 in a row. The Yankees win the division! Plus Tampa and Boston must play a one game playoff to see which team stays in the playoffs, but no one cares...
